Gators' wide receiver Chris Rainey arrested

A starting football player at the University of Florida was arrested early Tuesday on a charge of aggravated stalking.

Christopher Rainey, 22, of Lakeland, a wide receiver for the Gators, was charged with aggravated stalking of a woman he has been dating on and off for about three years.
Gainesville police said the incident began when the woman fell asleep and missed a call from Rainey.
Officer Jesse Bostick said Rainey went to the woman's home, and she talked to him for about 10 minutes and then told him to leave. According to Bostick, Rainey sent a text to the woman that said: "Time to die." The woman called police after receiving the text.

[censored] :smash: So much for team chemistry. Rainey has not been a bad guy in the number of ways bad guys usually are. He goes to class, puts in the school work and the tape time, has not been a trouble maker or a guy with an attitude. Urban has commented how he took to the whole enchilada of responsibilities, and has been a frequent guest at the Meyers' house.

So I can't defend a bone-headed text that is way beyond the pale content wise. If the article is correct, he left when the ex-girlfriend told him to leave. So he many have anger management issues, but I hope there is no history of any actual physical thing. If so, he is gone. The whole thing about "respect for women" in the Meyer universe should result in some bad fall out.

I don't have any idea what prompted such an out of character (as far as we know after several years of following Chris) text. It is inexcusable. But saying something stupid via text is different than hitting someone, and I guess I am waiting to see what other info comes out. I mean, the victim as pissed off ex-girlfriend may mean that some of the allegations may be slanted. Angry ex-gfs have been known to exaggerate. So I will wait to see how it turns out. He won't be playing Saturday in any event - or I'd be shocked if he did. (fill in snarky Urban will give him a ten minute penalty comments - HERE)

Only happy person about this could be Gilislee :shake:

Florida Statutes 784.048 Stalking; definitions; penalties.
—
(1)As used in this section, the term:

(a)“Harass” means to engage in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes substantial emotional distress in such person and serves no legitimate purpose.

(b)“Course of conduct” means a pattern of conduct composed of a series of acts over a period of time, however short, evidencing a continuity of purpose. Constitutionally protected activity is not included within the meaning of “course of conduct.” Such constitutionally protected activity includes picketing or other organized protests.

(c)“Credible threat” means a threat made with the intent to cause the person who is the target of the threat to reasonably fear for his or her safety. The threat must be against the life of, or a threat to cause bodily injury to, a person.

(d)“Cyberstalk” means to engage in a course of conduct to communicate, or to cause to be communicated, words, images, or language by or through the use of electronic mail or electronic communication, directed at a specific person, causing substantial emotional distress to that person and serving no legitimate purpose.

(2)Any person who willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks another person commits the offense of stalking, a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

(3)Any person who willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks another person, and makes a credible threat with the intent to place that person in reasonable fear of death or bodily injury of the person, or the person’s child, sibling, spouse, parent, or dependent, commits the offense of aggravated stalking, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

(4)Any person who, after an injunction for protection against repeat violence, sexual violence, or dating violence pursuant to s. 784.046, or an injunction for protection against domestic violence pursuant to s. 741.30, or after any other court-imposed prohibition of conduct toward the subject person or that person’s property, knowingly, willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks another person commits the offense of aggravated stalking, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

(5)Any person who willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks a minor under 16 years of age commits the offense of aggravated stalking, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

(6)Any law enforcement officer may arrest, without a warrant, any person he or she has probable cause to believe has violated the provisions of this section.

(7)Any person who, after having been sentenced for a violation of s. 794.011, s. 800.04, or s. 847.0135(5) and prohibited from contacting the victim of the offense under s. 921.244, willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks the victim commits the offense of aggravated stalking, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

(8)The punishment imposed under this section shall run consecutive to any former sentence imposed for a conviction for any offense under s. 794.011, s. 800.04, or s. 847.0135(5).

Under Florida law, sending a threatening text could be "stalking". It does not mean he was following her around campus necessarily. It is also the correct term used for sending a text message to a person that gives them reasonable fear for their safety.

Now Chris was concussed Saturday, and so was a little fuzzy when he sent his heartfelt plea to the young woman to lose some weight. Whether she agreed it was "time to diet" is not yet known.

Looks like the story has been updated, and according to his girlfriend it was a misunderstanding, and she wants the charges dropped.

UPDATE: Rainey released, woman wants charges dropped



Florida starting wide receiver Chris Rainey was charged with aggravated stalking, a third degree felony, and taken to the Alachua County jail at 3:17 a.m. today for allegedly sending a threatening text message to a woman he has dated in the past.

Rainey made first appearance this morning, however, and the woman involved said it was a misunderstanding and asked for the charges to be dropped.

"I did not want to have him arrested last night. When the police came, I signed papers to not press any charges,'' said Kelley Anderson, the woman in the case, at first appearance. "I don't fear for my safety. I think he should be released on his own recognizance.''

Now that the woman's name has been released, the (alleged) low-life portion of the Florida fan base will probably make her wish she had never called the cops.

Note to any attorneys who are Florida fans: This post is not intended to imply that the Florida fan base has a higher percentage of low-lifes than any other college football fan base, so please spare us any potential defensive reaction. :tongue2:

If you guys hadn't heard about that animal lover...
He's one of our future Darwin award winners...

He saw a gator who had been shot in the head with an arrow, and in his incredible wisdom, decided to try and help the poor, noble beast by trying to pull the arrow out...

You can only imagine how well THAT went for him...
