According to the Grand Rapids Press,

Wyoming Police pulled over the 22-year-old as he drove south on Byron Center Avenue SW near 44th Street in a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali just before 2 a.m.

According to the ticket issued to Grady, he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.281. Michigan's legal definition of drunk is 0.08.

Grady was held in the Kent County Jail and was to be arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of operating while intoxicated in Wyoming District Court.

However, District Judge Pablo Cortes found Grady was "unable to render an intelligent or knowing acknowledgment of the charges" and ordered Grady to appear for arraignment July 9. Grady remains free on bond.[/B]

Lucky to be alive. Bet the booster will want his ride back.

A couple facts: a 200 pound person would need to down 17 drinks in one hour to get that BAC.

The 2007 Denali sold new for about $46-49k. If he bought it today used with average mileage it would go for about $36k.

Nothing to see here, please move along.

It would be interesting to know to whom the Denali was registered. I know EGR is a fairly upscale community, so it wouldn't surprise me if it belongs to his family. But anytime an amateur athlete gets busted driving a big SUV, it does raise eyebrows.

As for the .281, that's out of hand.

WOW, if .281 is correct he has some real problems. My guess is that if I had an alcohol level of .281; I'd be unconscious, and I weigh about 200 pounds too. If Grady could navigate a car (maybe not too well) at that level he must have been drinking for some time to build up that level of tolerance. He definitely needs some serious help.

Re: U-M football coach Rich Rodriguez would not speculate on how the charge could affect Grady's future with the Wolverines. "I have been made aware of the incident involving Kevin by the Grady family," Rodriguez said in a statement. "Once we have an opportunity to meet with Kevin and review the details, we will handle the matter internally."

It will be interesting to see what action Rodriquez takes.

I had a roommate who got busted for DUI with a BAC of .28. I saw him that night after the arrest, no one knows how he got home or why he was released, he certainly didn't remember. He was shitfaced. From the police report, he learned that they pulled him over because he almost hit a bunch of parked cars. The officers had to hold him up while they tried to give a field sobriety test (though they did note that he was "very cooperative"). When he got home, he was stumbling around and couldn't stop laughing, I don't think he even knew what just happened. I don't know about MI, but in OH, a BAC like that calls for mandatory jail time of at least 3 days, and mandatory counseling. At this time of year, I would be surprised if this gets sorted out by training camp.

All the fishy SUV and DUI stuff aside, I hope he's okay. I hate scUM as much as the next guy, but I hate to see a talented kid with his future ahead of him put himself in a situation where he could really hurt himself or others.

I hope he's disciplined appropriately and starts making better decisions.

The case for DeAndre

Posted 11:23 p.m., June 25, 2008
Managed to obtain a copy of the witness statements I referred to in a post earlier today, and this is the first chance I've gotten to post them.
These statements, which were provided by a person who his close to the investigation, are from three people who claim to have witnessed parts of the incident that occurred last Saturday between DeAndre McDaniel and his girlfriend.
The names of the witnesses have been omitted at the request of the person who provided the statements to me. And it is important to understand that I cannot verify their authenticity or admissibility in court.
Nevertheless, I thought the details would be of interest to you folks. So here goes:
WITNESS NO. 1:
On the morning of June 21, I was staying over at DeAndre's place sitting on the couch downstairs. About 7:15 a.m. I awoke to DeAndre McDaniel and his girlfriend yelling and screaming at each other.
Knowing that couples in general argue from time to time, I paid the arguing no mind. But then I heard DeAndre's girlfriend saying put me down, put me down. When I looked up, I saw DeAndre carrying her down the stairs. I heard DeAndre say, I've repeatedly asked you to leave, but you won't leave, I just want you to leave my house. As DeAndre was bring(ing) her down the stairs, he kept saying let it go, let it go, but she kept grabbing on to something, so DeAndre put her down after the first flight of stairs.
Once he put her down, he said that if she didn't want to leave that way, then he would go ahead and get all of her things and put them into her car and get rid of her that way. After he put most of her things on top of her car, he then came back in the house and went up to his room and noticed that she had locked herself in his room and refused to open it.
He repeatedly asked her to open the door, but she remained locked in his room. He came downstairs and sat down. I asked him was everything OK and he said yes. About 10 minutes later, she opened the door. She said she had gotten some of her things out of his room. She said that she had gotten coach Vic's number off of his phone and that she was going to call him and the police. DeAndre responded by saying I don't care, call who you want.
They then walked down the stairs and parted ways. DeAndre went into the kitchen and she walked towards the door. When she noticed that he was walking towards the kitchen, she then turned around and followed him into the kitchen. He then tried to get her things out of the kitchen but she said she wanted to get her things herself. He said OK, then she said forget it and walked out of the house.
As she walked (past) me leaving, I did not notice any bruises or anything on her. She looked normal to me. In fact, smiling like nothing had happened. Once she got to the door, she started to yell and one thing she yelled was you will regret this.
WITNESS NO. 2:
On June 21st, 2008 at 6:30 a.m. I was woken up by a loud argument between DeAndre McDaniel and (name omitted). They were saying stuff about another girl and how DeAndre was getting other girls phone numbers and what not. So me being DeAndre's roommate I thought of it as nothing less than an argument, so I didn't even think of going downstairs to stop it.
It is not the first time they have argued, actually by me knowing both of them the way I do, I can honestly say that it is a common action between the two, and I have witnessed most of them, and never once has he hit her or hurt her in any way.
I didn't hear anything that would sound like a brutal attack or anything like that. So I just stayed out the way because I figured that nothing violent had happened since I didn't hear any type struggles.
WITNESS NO. 3:
I was woken up by someone beeping the horn outside, Saturday morning, June 21, 2008, around 7 a.m.
I got up to see who it was and saw (name omitted) walking to her car (Camry), which was parked outside my window. I saw her laughing as she stated, "I'm just going to leave I know the law, my mom or relative has been working with that stuff for about 20-30 yrs, so I know I'm not going to be the one going to jail."
I saw her continue to giggle as she got in her car and then she drove away.

Morning Briefing: Bad weekend for Iowa
July 21, 2008 7:45 AM

...

Hope you had a better weekend than Iowa. Things started Saturday with a story in the Iowa City Press-Citizen, which last week obtained a copy of a letter sent by the mother of the alleged victim in a sexual assault case involving two former Hawkeyes players (Cedric Everson and Abe Satterfield). The letter stated that university officials, including athletic director Gary Barta and football coach Kirk Ferentz, encouraged the victim to keep the matter in-house. The alleged victim's mother sent the letter to university officials last November and said she received no response.

In a phone interview with the newspaper, the alleged victim's mother said: "University of Iowa's character was non-existent. It is disappointing to say the very least."

Iowa responded with a statement saying the victim and her family were "repeatedly informed" of their options and that the university "fully supported" their decision to file a criminal report. Either way, Gov. Chet Culver wants an explanation and so do members of the state board of regents, the Press-Citizen reports.

Things only got worse early Saturday, as incoming freshman defensive end Riley Reiff became the latest Hawkeyes player arrested. Reiff pleaded guilty to public intoxication and interference with official acts, both misdemeanors, after allegedly leading at least eight Iowa City police officers on a 20-minute foot chase. In a statement, Barta called Reiff's actions "disturbing."

Expect more on both stories, but to restate this obvious, this isn't what Iowa, Barta and especially Ferentz needed heading into a pivotal season.

Iowa recruit arrested after leading police on chase
July 20, 2008 12:06 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

Iowa doesn't need this right now.

Trying to reform its off-field image after the arrests of 18 players in the last year and a half, the football program got stung again early Saturday. Defensive end Riley Reiff, an incoming freshman from South Dakota, was arrested after allegedly leading at least eight Iowa City police officers on a 20-minute foot chase, multiple media outlets reported. The 19-year-old pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of public intoxication and interference with official acts.

Apparently Reiff thought he was in his dorm room, since police said he started taking off his clothes in an alley before running from the cops.

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta issued the following statement about the situation:

"(Head coach) Kirk (Ferentz) and his staff have worked extremely hard throughout the summer setting a tone and laying out expectations," Barta wrote. "This makes Riley's actions even more disturbing.

Alright bookies, I think we need a vBet for whether or not Ferentz is the head coach at Iowa once the 2009 season starts. The off-field problems have been going on since 2001 (covered in great detail towards the beginning of this thread), and the program isn't winning anymore either. There's a lot of things coaches can sweep under the rug: Rape isn't one of them. This story is going to blow up ... well, as much as any story concerning Iowa football can blow up.

I'm thinking the University gives him enough rope to hang himself this year, then starts shopping for a new coach in January of next year.
