Southern Miss duo kicked off team

Two players charged for drive-by pellet gun shooting

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Two reserve Southern Miss defensive backs were kicked off the football team Wednesday after being charged with aggravated assault.

Sophomore Cornelius McGee and freshman C.J. Bailey were also dismissed from the university after being charged with the felony. Authorities said the two are accused of shooting a fellow student with an air-powered pellet gun.

University Police Chief Bob Hopkins told the Hattiesburg American that officers took a report Tuesday night from a student who was walking back from a campus cafeteria. The student said a car drove by, an occupant pointed a gun and fired a couple of rounds at him.

One of the pellets struck the student near the left eye, penetrating the skin.

"We were able to get the description from him and a short time later officers located the car," Hopkins said.
Officers found the weapon and ammunition in the car, Hopkins said.

The two were arraigned Wednesday and released on bond -- $51,000 for Bailey and $50,000 for McGee. McGee also was charged with possession of a firearm on state property.

Southern Miss football coach Jeff Bower said he found out Wednesday morning.

"It's behind us, it's over," Bower told the American.

McGee, 19, of Clarksdale, was a backup and played on special teams. Bailey, 19, of Moss Point, was being redshirted this year.

ROUNDUP: MSU back accused of assault

October 14, 2006
BY SHANNON SHELTON
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State junior reserve safety Mike Bell has been charged with assault and battery against a female student.
According to court records, Bell allegedly assaulted Caitlin Mahoney on Sept. 8 following an on-campus party. He was released after posting a $500 bond and completed a pretrial hearing Oct. 4 through the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office.
Bell, who has pleaded not guilty, will face a second pretrial hearing on the charge. A date has not been set.
Bell, from Shaker Heights, Ohio, underwent shoulder surgery in the off-season. He was on the roster at the start of the fall but did not play in any games.
MSU associate athletics director John Lewandowski said Friday that Bell had been "withheld from all football-related activities" for disciplinary reasons for most of the fall season.
As a sophomore in 2005, Bell appeared in eight games, mostly on special teams. He was expected to compete for time as a backup safety upon his return from surgery.
Mahoney, a junior from Lake Mary, Fla., is an All-Big Ten third baseman on the softball team.
Bell is one of five MSU football players who have been removed from the team this fall for disciplinary reasons.
Kellen Davis, Eric Andino, Barre Mackie and Jeremy McGinnis were suspended amid allegations they were involved in an altercation off campus last week. East Lansing police expect to announce the results of their investigation in that case early next week.

Police: Oklahoma LB Alexander arrested on misdemeanor charges October 16, 2006
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Linebacker Rufus Alexander, Oklahoma's leading tackler, was arrested early Sunday on two misdemeanor charges, police said.
A police dispatcher confirmed that Alexander was arrested about 2 a.m. on charges of disturbing the peace and interference with official process. Alexander posted bond according to a police dispatcher who referred questions about additional details to a public information officer.
Calls to Norman's public information officer were not returned late Sunday. A message left for Oklahoma associate athletic director for communications Kenny Mossman late Sunday also was not immediately returned.
Alexander, considered an NFL prospect, had seven tackles and a diving interception in Oklahoma's 34-9 win against Iowa State on Saturday.
Alexander, who leads Oklahoma with 48 tackles, announced in January that he would return for his senior season. He had a team-high 102 tackles for the Sooners last season, including 17 for a loss, along with five sacks and two forced fumbles.
After the win against Iowa State, Oklahoma (4-2, 1-2 Big 12) moved from No. 23 to No. 20 in The Associated Press' college football poll.

SMU player arrested on abuse charge

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower says defensive tackle Ryan Watson has been arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic abuse.

Bower said Monday that Watson and his wife were arrested and charged Sunday.

"This was an issue with him and his wife, and I don't know what happened," Bower told The Clarion-Ledger newspaper. "I won't make any determinations until I sit down and talk with him."

Watson, who transferred to Southern Mississippi from Southern Cal after the 2003 season, competed for a starting job during spring practice, but a neck injury put him behind this fall.

The LaPlace, La., native made his first career start against Tulsa, and has played in four of The Golden Eagles' other five games. He has six tackles on the season.

Bower also announced that running back C.J. Barrows has quit the team.
"He hung it up," Bower said. "Said he was unhappy with his role."

Barrows, who had been hampered by injury since arriving at Southern Miss in 2004, is the third running back to leave the team since the start of the season.

Junior Cody Hull left following the season opener at Florida. Junior Larry Thomas left after the North Carolina State game.

Hull and Thomas were starters at various points during the 2005 season, and Thomas started against Florida.

Both saw their roles reduced with the ascension of freshman Damion Fletcher, who ranks eighth among Division I-A backs with 113.5 yards rushing per game.

Barrows did not play in a game his first two seasons, redshirting in 2004 after breaking his thumb during the preseason. He didn't play in 2005 after hernia surgery.

Barrows played in every game this season for the Golden Eagles (4-2), mainly on special teams. As a running back, he had 10 carries for 34 yards, all coming against Southeastern Louisiana.

With just Fletcher and senior Conrad Chanove left on the active depth chart, Bower said the Golden Eagles will turn to freshman Tory Harrison -- a player Bower had hoped to redshirt -- for depth.

"We're going to play Harrison," Bower said. "We've got to."
