Hokies lose 2 players, may get 2 back

By MIKE KNOBLER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 09/26/06 No. 11 Virginia Tech suspended two starters for Saturday's game against No. 24 Georgia Tech, but the Hokies might get two other key players back.
Receiver Josh Morgan and defensive end Chris Ellis will sit out the game for unspecified violations of team rules, coach Frank Beamer said Monday. However, ESPN reported Monday that the two were arrested early Sunday morning following an altercation outside of a nightclub in Blacksburg, Va., on misdemeanor charges of obstructing an officer.
The good news for the Hokies is that leading receiver David Clowney and cornerback Roland Minor might return from medical problems.
Clowney, with 13 catches for 182 yards, had an appendectomy on Thursday.
"Hey, if Big Ben [Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback] can play in four days after the same thing, I can play in nine," Clowney told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I wanted to play [last week], but that would have been too soon."
Minor, who intercepted two passes in a 2004 game against Georgia Tech, has yet to play this season because of a broken wrist. The cast is off, and Minor said he'll be able to play Saturday. Even before Minor got hurt, sophomore Victor Harris was leading him for the starting job at field cornerback. Harris intercepted two passes against Cincinnati and returned one 72 yards for a touchdown.
Morgan ranks second for Virginia Tech in receptions, with 10 for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Ellis has made 12 tackles, three behind the line of scrimmage, and has four quarterback hurries.

Charges dropped

Navy football player exonerated in sexual assault case

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- The sexual assault case against a U.S. Naval Academy football player was dropped Monday, a day before it was to go to trial, but school officials said new charges could be filed.

Kenny Ray Morrison, a senior from Kingwood, Texas, who was accused of taking advantage of a drunken female midshipman on Feb. 4 in a Washington hotel room, was to face a special court martial Tuesday at the Washington Navy Yard. Morrison had pleaded not guilty.

His attorney said he first learned the case was dropped when his witnesses were informed they were no longer needed.

Navy prosecutors then confirmed the charges of indecent assault and conduct unbecoming an officer against Morrison were dropped, but gave few details why, defense attorney William Ferris said.

"The way this was handled was outrageous," Ferris said.

Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Rodney Rempt ordered the charges be dropped without prejudice because "the Naval Academy anticipates proffering new charges," said academy spokesman Cmdr. Ed Austin.

He would not say what those charges may be or give details about the new information that has "recently become available" to Navy investigators. Any new charges would likely be referred to an Article 32 hearing, the military's form of a grand jury, Austin said.

According to the case against him, Morrison was accused of removing the woman's clothes in a Washington hotel after a night of drinking. Charging documents state he pressured her "to engage in multiple acts of sexual intercourse." A Navy investigator testified during a preliminary hearing that Morrison's DNA was recovered from a rape kit conducted on the woman.

Despite the allegations, Morrison was not charged with rape and faced a special court martial, a lesser form of military trial than a general court martial. If convicted, he likely would not have faced prison time.

Earlier this month, a military judge ruled that evidence the woman was given a date rape drug near the time of the alleged assault could not be used during the trial. Marine Lt. Col. Paul McConnell ruled the GHB found in a toxicology report could not be linked to Morrison.

Morrison is one of three people at the Naval Academy accused of sexual misconduct this year, including the football team's star quarterback. The cases come as closer scrutiny is cast on the nation's military schools following numerous claims of sexual assault.

The academy has taken several steps to curb abuse, such as tightening its alcohol policies and encouraging midshipman to report it, but a Pentagon report last year said the school was not doing enough.

Former UConn safety Taylor gets probation after guilty plea

VERNON, Conn. -- Former Connecticut starting safety Marvin Taylor was sentenced to a year of probation and 50 hours of community service after pleading guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor larceny and illegal use of a credit card.

Taylor was dismissed from the football team last week. He was arrested Sept. 15 after police said he obtained a credit card number and used it for several purchases without the owner's consent.

The 22-year-old from New Brunswick, N.J., said he has withdrawn from UConn and hopes to continue his education and football career elsewhere, The Hartford Courant reported on its Web site Tuesday.

A day after his arrest, Taylor started in UConn's 24-13 home loss to Wake Forest.

Taylor was one of five players arrested in a pellet-gun shooting outside a convenience store in May 2005. Charges against two players were dismissed.

Taylor and two other teammates were granted accelerated rehabilitation, a program for first-time offenders. Charges against them would be dismissed if they successfully completed two years' of probation.

Assault trial delayed for Mizzou star

RB Tony Temple's case postponed for the second time

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri running back Tony Temple's trial on a misdemeanor assault charge was postponed Tuesday for the second time in as many months.

Temple, a junior from Kansas City who is averaging 104.2 yards rushing for the No. 25-ranked Tigers, was scheduled to appear before a Boone County Circuit Court judge Tuesday morning.

Temple was not in the courtroom when his attorney, R. Travis Jacobs, asked the judge for a continuance. The request was granted without explanation, and no future court date was announced.

Jacobs told the Columbia Missourian in an article published Tuesday that he needed to conduct additional interviews and obtain a police report before the case could go to trial. Jacobs also was granted a continuance in August, when Temple was initially scheduled to appear in court.

Temple was arrested June 11 for allegedly punching a Bennigan's worker in the face and mouth in a dispute involving Temple's girlfriend, a former Missouri softball player who worked at the restaurant.

Temple was suspended from the team for summer conditioning drills by coach Gary Pinkel but returned to become the leading rusher for No. 25 Missouri, which is 4-0 this season.

Former Longhorns RB pleads guilty to possession charge

BELTON, Texas -- Former Texas running back Ramonce Taylor pleaded guilty Tuesday to marijuana possession stemming from his May 14 arrest, Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza's office said.

Taylor pleaded guilty to having 4 ounces to 5 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Taylor had four 1-pound baggies of marijuana.

The charge was a state jail felony, which is punishable by 180 days to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 2.

Taylor, who scored a team-high 15 touchdowns during the Longhorns' 2005 national championship season, announced before the season he would transfer. He enrolled at Texas College, an NAIA school, in Tyler but had not been cleared to play this season.

Henderson, Smith plead guilty to theft
Online court records indicate that Mike Henderson and Tyler Smith of the Iowa men's basketball team have pleaded guilty to fifth-degree theft in connection with a shoplifting incident Sunday at Coral Ridge Mall.
Records indicate that both players received a deferred judgment, which provides the opportunity to expunge the conviction from their records if they successfully serve a one-year term of probation. Each player was ordered to do 20 hours community service as well.

UPDATE: 17 OU football players arrested this year
3:33 PM, Saturday, September 30, 2006 ATHENS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio University will review its football team's policies after a newspaper reported that 17 players have been arrested this year on charges including drug abuse and assault, the chairman of the board of trustees said.

None of the players has missed game time, The Columbus Dispatch reported Saturday. Ten have been convicted of misdemeanors in Athens Municipal Court.

"Not good news," board chairman Greg Browning said when the newspaper told him about the arrests.

"I can promise you I will be following up on this immediately. It obviously raises concerns. We'll make sure it's dealt with in the right way."

Six days of studying in the football office is the standard punishment for first-time offenders. Coach Frank Solich said a felony, a weapons charge or a second offense could get a player suspended or kicked off the team. Two players were dismissed last year.

Solich defended his discipline system.

"We think it's not only fair, but pretty tough," he said.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he was bothered by the number of arrests but didn't think further punishments were necessary.

University President Roderick McDavis wouldn't talk about the football program. He is at the helm of a new effort to curb underage and high-risk drinking at the university, which was sixth on the Princeton Review's most recent list of top party schools. Several of the 17 players were charged with alcohol-related offenses.

After Solich was convicted of drunken driving in November, McDavis put him on probation and required him to take part in alcohol education initiatives at the school. The coach pleaded no contest but later tried unsuccessfully to withdraw the plea.

Junior offensive lineman Paul Johnson, 22, was convicted Sept. 21 of assault after he and another player knocked down and beat a bar owner who had kicked them out, court records show. Athens Municipal Court Judge William Grim sentenced Johnson to 10 days in jail, which he'll start serving Nov. 27, after the regular season ends. Prosecutors said it's common for the judge to delay students' sentencing until school vacations so they don't miss class.

Former football player Chris Kraus said he was the victim of the assault. He has contacted university officials about players misbehaving in the bar he manages, The Pub.

"The university, the athletic department is blowing this off like nothing, when I was being kicked in the head," Kraus said. He said he was caught with beer as an 18-year-old football player in 1998 and suspended for a game by then-coach Jim Grobe.

Solich said he tells his players to stay out of The Pub. Two other players were arrested outside the bar in April, and in May a player was charged with threatening an employee.

Four Ohio State football players have been charged in Franklin County Municipal Court since Jan. 1. Coach Jim Tressel disciplines players on a case-by-case basis and won't talk about the penalties he issues, said Steve Snapp, an Ohio State spokesman.

Solich is in his second year at Ohio after six seasons at Nebraska, where he often suspended and sometimes dismissed convicted players. He said most of those players were found guilty of second offenses.

West Virginia receiver out for Mississippi State game after DUI arrest
Associated Press
Tue, Oct 3, 2006
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia wide receiver Jeremy Bruce has been suspended indefinitely after a drunken driving arrest.
The sophomore from Beaver Falls, Pa., will not travel with No. 4 West Virginia for Saturday`s game at Mississippi State, coach Rich Rodriguez said Tuesday.
Oddsmakers have West Virginia listed as a 25-point favorite and the total set at 49 for the matchup.
``He made a mistake,`` Rodriguez said.
Bruce was arrested Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Details of the arrest were unavailable Tuesday. Campus police said no one was available to comment. Sports information director Shelly Poe had no further information.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Bruce has played in all four games this season, catching three passes for 66 yards.
Last year as a freshman, Bruce had three receptions for 26 yards and ran once on a reverse for 9 yards. He was limited for much of the season with a bad ankle.

Doesn't sound like the kid was a huge producer (or maybe those rumors about the 'Eers anemic passing game are all true). Stupid business though, just stupid.

Police said a window at the Gourmet Heaven on Broadway was broken during the scuffle early Sunday.

The East Lansing Police Department is expected to complete its investigation of an altercation reportedly involving four members of the MSU football team by the end of the week.
Lt. Kevin Daley said Tuesday that police responded to a call from a student apartment complex north of the MSU campus. The call reported an altercation on the premises around 1:30 a.m. Friday.
"They felt our presence was needed to resolve the issue," Daley said.
Daley said that officers on the scene learned that four men involved were associated with the MSU football program, but Daley did not reveal their names.
Monday, the MSU athletic department said tight ends Kellen Davis and Eric Andino, along with walk-on receivers Barre Mackie and Jeremy McGinnis, had been suspended for a "failure to meet team expectations." Davis, a starter, and Andino had been expected to play against Michigan last Saturday, but neither dressed for the game.
