Miami safety Cooper shot, teammate returns fire
Associated Press

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. -- Miami Hurricanes reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard Friday morning by an unknown person who fled after another player returned gunfire.

Police said Cooper was able to walk after being shot and the injury wasn't believed to be serious, but he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

After Cooper was shot, teammate and roommate Brandon Meriweather pulled a pistol from his pants pocket and fired three times at the person, who jumped a fence and fled with another person in a car, police said. It was unclear if the assailant was hit.

Police said Meriweather used his gun legally.

Cooper and Meriweather told police they noticed a suspicious car parked outside their home near campus shortly after 6:30 a.m. When they went outside to investigate, a person crouched next to the house jumped up and shot Cooper.

The Miami athletic department released a statement saying it was cooperating with the police investigation.

"Until the investigation is complete, we will not have any additional comment," the statement said.

The house is owned by Hurricanes defensive backs coach Tim Walton and rented to players with approval from the school's compliance office.

Cooper, a junior, has played mostly on special teams for three years. He is listed as a second-team safety on the spring depth chart.

Meriweather is a standout safety for the Hurricanes.

Well, Meriweather was already from Florida, and is 22. He could've been licensed to carry a firearm as long as five years ago, and Florida has very lenient concealed-carry laws. As is the case here, pants pockets are OK for carrying a loaded firearm in the state.

Now, academy superintendent Vice Admiral Rodney Rempt will decide whether to discipline Owens for violating academy rules, including prohibitions against having sex on campus, fraternizing with a member of his company and violating a written order that he stay away from his accuser.

What's to decide? He committed the infractions and needs to be held accountable. How can anyone at the academy expect to be able to punish Midshipman Smith or Midshipman Jones for these violations if the superintendent doesn't punish Owens? By the way, the no-punishment ruling by the panel on the infractions of conduct unbecoming an officer and disobeying a lawful order was total bullshit.

Nice to see Meriweather's packing heat in the heart of the Sunshine State. Never know what's going to happen... :shake: :smash:

Coker: Gun use is prohibited among my players
Miami coach Larry Coker said Monday that, after an off-campus incident last week involving two Hurricanes, he'll advise his players not to own guns. Reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks by an assailant in a car outside his house and teammate Brandon Meriweather shot at the car as it drove away."I don't want our players to have firearms," Coker said. "I'd rather they dial 911 to handle those kinds of problems."
He said he wouldn't make it a rule that players can't own guns, but he will "discourage" it. Cooper's injury wasn't serious, Coker said.

Yes, if I remember correctly, he did play at OSU.

BTW, so no one asks anymore questions about this whole incident, Merriweather was also legally permitted to carry a firearm.
is he permitted to blindly return fire into the night....to the point where he can't even tell if he hit the guy he was shooting at?

sounds like a safe little evening.

Utah State players face drug charge

Posted: Wednesday July 26, 2006 7:35PM

LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Five Utah State football players face misdemeanor drug charges two weeks before practice begins.

"I am very disappointed, especially with the timing with us going into camp. It is a group of young players who made a bad decision," coach Brent Guy said. "We will handle this internally, and there will be disciplinary action."

The players allowed police to search an apartment where a neighbor reported the smell of burning marijuana on Saturday.

"They were up front and honest in their use of a small amount of marijuana," Logan Police Lt. Brad Franke said. "All were issued citations and released at the scene."

The players are receiver Kendall Fisher, 19, defensive lineman Steven Downs, 19, tailback Marcus Cross, 21 and offensive linemen Brennan McFadden and Ryan Tonnemacher, who are both 19.

A sixth player in the apartment was not charged but remains under investigation, he said.

The men are charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail.

Guy, who was attending the Western Athletic Conference media day in Boise, Idaho, would not say how he planned to punish the players. The Aggies start practice Aug. 9.

Earlier this year, receiver Dionte Holloway was dismissed from the team after being arrested for marijuana possession.

Quarterback Jerod Walker was also dropped. He was accused of marijuana possession and aggravated sexual assault.

Wyoming opens its football season at home against Utah State on Sept. 2.
