BESSEMER, Ala. -- Alabama linebacker Juwan Simpson agreed to enter a pre-trial drug program during a brief court appearance that a defense attorney said was the first step toward resolving misdemeanor marijuana, theft and weapons charges.

Simpson, 21, was arrested May 20 by a sheriff's officer after being stopped for erratic driving on Interstate 20/59 west of Birmingham. He was charged with marijuana possession, receiving stolen property and carrying a pistol without a permit.

He agreed to enter a court-based drug treatment program during a hearing Tuesday before District Judge Eric Fancher. Simpson's lawyer, H. Lewis Gillis, said the entire case would likely be resolved without a trial.

"We fully expect all of these charges to disappear and be dismissed," Gillis said.

Alabama coach Mike Shula has not announced any punishment for Simpson, who is a key returning player on the Crimson Tide's defense. Gillis said he spoke with Shula once and plans to let him see the case file to resolve any lingering questions the coach may have.

Simpson already has earned his bachelor's degree from the university and is pursuing a second one in criminal justice.

Gators suspend Atkins
But Florida declines request for release for a transfer

Posted: Thursday June 22, 2006 5:13PM

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida indefinitely suspended defensive back Avery Atkins following allegations that he beat the mother of his child, but declined the sophomore's request to be released so he could transfer to another school.

Atkins allegedly punched Benarah Sanford several times and held her against her will in her car in Daytona Beach over the weekend, according to a police report. Atkins said he only acted in self defense when she attacked him and he denied keeping her in the car. No charges have been filed in the case, which remains open.

Atkins, a possible starter, told the Orlando Sentinel he tried to leave the school, but coach Urban Meyer and school officials denied his request earlier this month.

"I asked, but they wouldn't give it," Atkins said Wednesday. "I feel like a person should be able to make his own decisions. They're trying to tell me what to do."

Meyer said Atkins is the first player to whom he has not granted a release in his five-plus years as a head coach.

Meyer indefinitely suspended Atkins on Monday, saying the player "has some issues to deal with before he can participate in any of our team activities."

Atkins missed the end of spring practice in April to tend to a family issue.

"I've talked to him, talked to his family," Meyer said. "We feel like it's in his best interest to try to fight through this and not be scared of the issues."
Atkins said he and Sanford are communicating, and neither expects to be arrested.

"It will probably be all over by the beginning of next week," he said.

<hr noshade="noshade" size="1"> Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden dismissed receiver/kick returner Kenny O'Neal for "conduct detrimental to the team," losing a promising big-play option.
O'Neal, 20, an All-America sprinter in 2005, had not been running track since April so he could concentrate on academics and football. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, he has no criminal record.
As a redshirt freshman last year, he had five catches for 110 yards (75 coming on one catch against Syracuse) and a team-high 503 yards on 21 kickoff returns.
Meanwhile, backup cornerback Trevor Ford, a rising redshirt sophomore from Miami Northwestern, released a statement through the school that he intends to "transfer for personal reasons." Ford, who missed about half the season with neck and shoulder injuries, had six tackles (two in the ACC Championship Game win against Virginia Tech) and broke up one pass.

Ore. recruit pleads, keeps roster spot

Johnson and another recruit, Major Marquis Culbert, 18, of San Pedro, Calif., were each accused of groping a woman in a dorm room while visiting Eugene on a recruiting trip in January.

Oregon officials quickly learned of the accusations against Culbert and stopped recruiting him. Unaware that Johnson was directly involved, they signed him to a national letter of intent. Officials learned of his indictment in May.
Whoops - bet that Oregon's recruiting staff is happy with their background checking on this one.

Culbert, who signed with Nebraska as a defensive back, has pleaded not guilty. No court dates are set in his case.
Yet for some teams, background files are a secondary concern. Callahan shows his high moral standards once again.

(Johnson) was allowed until July 6 to begin serving his jail sentence, which may include alternative programs such as road crew.
Can't Oregon's courts be a little more inventive? Alternative programs = road crew?

Cal's Levy arrested on assault charge
Posted: Monday June 26, 2006 10:05PM

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- California suspended senior quarterback Steve Levy indefinitely on Monday after his arrest on felony assault charges stemming from an alleged bar fight.

Levy, who came off the bench to lead the Golden Bears' season-ending victories over Stanford and Brigham Young last season, spent most of Sunday in San Francisco County Jail after his arrest on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm.

According to police, the weapon was a pint glass from Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. After a bar employee broke up a dispute between Levy and another patron early Sunday morning, the quarterback picked up the glass and hit the employee in the face, San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens said.

The 22-year-old Levy apparently tried to leave the bar after the incident, but was detained by people on the street until police arrived, Gittens said.

"We're aware of the situation with Steve, and he will be suspended from all team activities until we have more information," coach Jeff Tedford said.
Levy, a longtime backup who played fullback for one season earlier in his career, led the Golden Bears to season-ending wins in the Big Game and the Las Vegas Bowl in his first two career starts.

He was expected to compete for the starting job again when Cal's players report to training camp on Aug. 6, though Nate Longshore and Joe Ayoob moved ahead of him on the depth chart after Cal's spring game in April.

"We have taken our initial action," athletic director Sandy Barbour said. "Now we're gathering information, and any further action will take place after we feel like we have the complete facts."

Levy, a New York native, attended an elite New Jersey prep school before joining the Bears in 2002.

Atkins granted release from Florida

Posted: Friday June 30, 2006 9:26PM

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Troubled cornerback Avery Atkins, accused of striking the mother of his 2-month-old child last week, has been released from Florida's football program.

Atkins asked for his release before the alleged battery, but coach Urban Meyer denied the request after talking with family members. Meyer relented Thursday.
<!--startclickprintexclude-->

"After a complete evaluation, we have granted Avery Atkins his release from the Florida football program," Meyer said in a statement.

Atkins allegedly punched Benarah Sanford several times and held her against her will in her car in Daytona Beach, according to a police report. Atkins said he only acted in self defense when she attacked him and he denied keeping her in the car. No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in the case.

Atkins was suspended indefinitely.

A sophomore slated to start for the Gators this fall, Atkins had an interception against Florida State last season. He missed the end of spring practice in April to tend to a family issue.

Levy is suspended for one game following this assault with a weapon (and anyone who has seen a bar fight with glass knows how dangerous that can be).
The game for which Levy is suspended is against the Vols in Knoxville (can we all say irony in unison).

Of course, the impact that has on Cal's team when they face Tennessee is a relevant issue. Fact is that Levy is so far off the depth chart (even though 2-0 as a starter) that he is effectively invisible. As for the legal side, if he is found guilty Levy should be behind bars.

Football captain at Harvard suspended
Thomas facing criminal charges

By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff | July 8, 2006

CAMBRIDGE -- The Harvard University football captain has been indefinitely suspended and faces possible dismissal from the team as he prepares for a hearing on multiple criminal charges, including assault and battery domestic abuse and breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony at a campus dorm.

Matthew C. Thomas, an all-Ivy linebacker who last November was named the 133d football captain in school history, was arrested June 5 after he allegedly broke into the room of his former girlfriend in Gilbert Hall at Currier House and physically abused her, according to a criminal complaint filed by Harvard police in Cambridge District Court.

Witnesses said they first saw Thomas, who is 6 feet 1 inch and weighs 245 pounds, ``strangling [the alleged victim] with one hand" before ``he suddenly lifted her and drove his knee into her chest," according to a Harvard police report accompanying the complaint.

Police said the woman was transported by ambulance to Mount Auburn Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries, including a large welt on her lower back.

``I'm deeply troubled by the allegations," Harvard coach Tim Murphy said yesterday. ``Based on his arrest, I suspended him indefinitely from the team on June 8. If the allegations prove to be true, he will be dismissed from the team. We are just awaiting due process."

Thomas, 22, a senior from Mount Airy, Md., also was charged with malicious destruction of property for allegedly damaging the lock and door to his former girlfriend's room. He is scheduled to appear at a pretrial hearing July 19 in Cambridge District Court. He could not be reached for comment.

Thomas was arrested several weeks after two senior teammates -- tight end Dan Lane, of Coral Springs, Fla., and defensive back James Velissaris, of Chicago -- were disciplined for a drinking-related altercation with a shuttle bus driver outside Currier House. Both were suspended for next season's opener Sept. 16 against Holy Cross at Harvard Stadium.

Last year, Russell Schober, then an 18-year-old sophomore free safety from Webster, Texas, was arrested near Harvard Square and charged with possessing a small amount of marijuana and being a minor in possession of alcohol. A judge in Cambridge District Court found sufficient facts to continue the case without a finding and placed Schober on unsupervised probation for six months. The charges then were dismissed last Oct. 15, after Schober paid $50 in court costs.

Murphy suspended Schober from the team because of the incident, and Schober missed eight games last year during Harvard's 7-3 season.

When Murphy was asked if he were concerned about the series of alcohol-related incidents involving the Harvard team, he said, ``I think we're a microcosm of society. I think any college administrator is concerned about [students] drinking in college. I'm not sure that was any different 20 years ago."

In the latest incident, the alleged victim was described as ``a thin young woman" who ``was in obvious distress and having difficulty breathing and in an apparent state of panic, begging for an Emergency Medical Technician" when officers arrived, according to the police report. The woman said she and Thomas had separately attended the Senior Soiree, where both had been drinking, though she described Thomas as ``more intoxicated," the police reported.

The alleged victim told police she went to her room despite receiving a call warning her to stay away because Thomas was there. Police said she discovered Thomas passed out on the floor.

``She woke him to confront him about a relationship that he was involved in with another woman," the report said. ``She stated she poked him and yelling ensued between the two. He then jumped up and began to strike her about the body."

The police report said a witness told them that Michael Lucas, a senior fullback from Naperville, Ill., had placed Thomas on the bed in the alleged victim's room and told the witness Thomas was ``quite drunk and needed to sleep it off."

Officers said they needed to awaken Thomas after they aided the alleged victim. Their report said Thomas appeared confused about why police were there and, at first, about where he was. He was later arraigned in Cambridge District Court, where a judge found probable cause to proceed with the case. His arrest was reported June 22 by the Harvard Crimson.

Murphy suggested it would be unfair to characterize the recent series of incidents as representative of the teams he has coached at Harvard since 1994.

``I think I'm probably tougher on the kids than the college is," Murphy said. ``I think our kids have had a remarkable record of citizenship over the last 13 years."

2 Fresno College Athletes Arrested in Rape of 11 Year Old Girl

Priscilla Rodriguez Reporting
KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO

FRESNO, CA (KNX) -- Fresno police are investigating the rape of an eleven-year-old girl that may have involved as many as ten men.
Police have arrested two men and identified eight others as persons of interest. They say most or all are football players at either Fresno City College or Reedley College.
Police say the victim, a runaway from a group home, went to the Villa Hermosa apartments in southwest Fresno last night to visit an acquaintance. While she was there, she allegedly was sexually assaulted multiple times by several men.
Twenty-year-old Mackey Davis and 19-year-old Eddie Scott are each being held on 100-thousand dollars bail on child molestation and oral copulation charges.
Police say both were students at Reedley and may have been in the process of transferring to Fresno City.
Officials at both colleges could not be reached for comment.

Two arrests have been made in the Saturday attack, and officials said they have identified eight others as persons of interest. Most or all are students at either Fresno City College or Reedley College, police said.

The alleged victim went to an apartment complex on Saturday night to visit an acquaintance, said police spokesman Jeff Cardinale. While she was inside one of the apartments, she allegedly was sexually assaulted multiple times by several men.

The girl fled the apartment and sought help from a couple on the street, who called police. She suffered no serious physical injuries, but was taken to a hospital for an examination and is now in the care of Child Protective Services.

Mackey Davis, 20, and Eddie Scott, 19, were arrested on suspicion of child molestation with a victim under 14 and oral copulation with a victim under 18. Both were being held on $100,000 bail.

The rape allegedly took place in apartments that house some Fresno City College football players. Davis and Scott were students at Reedley and may have been in the process of transferring to Fresno City College, Cardinale said.

"We're very much concerned about what's going on," said Ned Doffoney, president of Fresno City College. "Right now we just want to look into what ties there are with the college and make sure that everyone's rights are being respected."

Officials at Reedley College said they were working with police and did not want to comment on an ongoing investigation.

It was not immediately clear if Davis and Scott had attorneys Monday.

Clemson assistant track coach dies in watercraft crash
Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Clemson offensive lineman Roman Fry was driving the personal watercraft that struck and killed the school's assistant track coach last weekend.

The state Natural Resources Department says alcohol was not thought to be a contributing factor in the accident on Lake Keowee, where Jarrett Foster, 32, died from head injuries Saturday.

Fry underwent and passed several field sobriety tests, said his attorney, Beattie Ashmore.

Fry has not been charged, said Lt. Robert McCullough of the Natural Resources Department. However, McCullough added that the agency is continuing to investigate.

Ashmore said Fry is cooperating with authorities and that the football player planned to talk with investigators again as early as Wednesday.

"This is just a horribly tragic accident," Ashmore said Monday. "Roman is trying to deal with the loss of a friend."

McCullough said Foster was on the watercraft with someone else when it flipped. McCullough said the second watercraft, driven by Fry, then struck Foster in the back of the head.

The others involved thought Foster was faking an injury, Ashmore said. Moments later, they realized he was hurt and called 911.

Oconee County coroner Karl Addis said Foster's death is considered an accident. He said toxicology tests are being handled by the State Law Enforcement Division.

Ashmore said Fry has spoken with members of Foster's family.

Members of the track team spent part of Monday afternoon remembering their coach. A wreath was put up at the school's outdoor track with a sign that said the facility would be closed until after Foster's memorial service.

There will be one on Clemson's campus Tuesday, with a second service to be held Wednesday in Forest City, N.C., where Foster's parents live.

"I want people to remember him not just as a track coach but as a special person,'' said Adam Linkenauger, who has won Atlantic Coast Conference indoor and outdoor high jump titles in his first three seasons at Clemson.

Foster had finished his seventh year with the Tigers. Clemson track coach Bob Pollock said the team's field athletes wrapped up their most successful season.

"This is a deep loss for our program, our athletic department, our community and to me personally," Pollock said.

Fry, a 6-foot-4, 290 pound senior this fall, is expected to be part of a strong offensive line for Clemson. He was a second-team all-ACC selection last season and, last month, was among 54 players chosen for this year's Outland Trophy preseason watch list.

Fry didn't take part in Clemson's voluntary summer workouts Monday.

Clemson athletic spokesman Tim Bourret said Fry hasn't asked for a leave of absence from the team because of the accident.

Tigers football coach Tommy Bowden said his "thoughts and prayers are first with Jarrett Foster's parents and family. He was a fine young man who had a significant positive impact on our track program and athletic department. This was a terrible accident."

During Foster's time as an assistant coach, Clemson had five top-20 team finishes and won six team Atlantic Coast Conference championships.

He was the East Region Assistant Coach of the Year for Jumps/Combined Events in 2005, chosen by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.

Foster was also an assistant at his alma mater, Western Carolina. As part of the Catamounts track and field team, he was a three-year letter winner, team captain and MVP during his senior season.
