Tennessee backup QB suspended after DUI arrest
Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee quarterback Jim Bob Cooter was suspended indefinitely Monday after campus police arrested him on a drunken-driving charge.

Coach Philip Fulmer cited a violation of team rules. He said Cooter will miss the season opener Sept. 2 against California and undergo an alcohol evaluation before he can return.

"Jim Bob has let the team down and embarrassed himself and his family by his actions," Fulmer said. "He has benefited greatly by being part of the Tennessee family, and with that comes great responsibility for his actions."

Cooter was arrested Saturday after campus officers noticed a sports utility vehicle crossing the center line and driving on the wrong side of the street, according to a campus police report. Cooter failed three field sobriety tests.

The quarterback was charged with first offense driving under the influence, the report said. A female passenger was charged with underage consumption of alcohol.

"He did not behave in a responsible manner, and he understands very clearly that even though this is his first offense, there will be consequences," Fulmer said.

Cooter earned his bachelor's degree in May but is to play as a graduate student this fall. He did not attempt a pass in 2005 and made late appearances in one game each in 2003 and 2004 after redshirting in 2002.

"He has benefited greatly by being part of the Tennessee family, and with that comes great responsibility"

Nice to hear Fulmer channeling the sage wisdom of Spider-Man's Uncle Ben.

Rouse, one of the nation's top freshman prospects last season, and a native of Tallahassee, had only six catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. Rouse also returned 11 punts for 97 yards and six kickoffs for 107 yards.

Wow, we sure missed out on a great one... :roll1:

Ore. recruit pleads, keeps roster spot

Posted: Tuesday June 13, 2006 1:50PM

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Marvin Johnson, a University of Oregon football recruit who faced charges of sexual abuse, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges and will join the team this fall.

The 18-year-old from Compton, Calif., pleaded guilty Monday to criminal trespassing and harassment. He was sentenced to probation and 30 days in jail. The resolution means Johnson will keep his full scholarship, said Dave Williford, the university's media services director.

Johnson and another recruit, Major Marquis Culbert, 18, of San Pedro, Calif., were each accused of groping a woman in a dorm room while visiting Eugene on a recruiting trip in January.

Oregon officials quickly learned of the accusations against Culbert and stopped recruiting him. Unaware that Johnson was directly involved, they signed him to a national letter of intent. Officials learned of his indictment in May.

Culbert, who signed with Nebraska as a defensive back, has pleaded not guilty. No court dates are set in his case.

Johnson, who was 17 at the time of the incident, had no prior criminal record, Deputy Lane County District Attorney Bob Gorham said in court.
The victim encouraged the plea bargain, Gorham said.

Johnson was recruited as a safety after helping Dominguez High School in Compton to a state title in the fall. He has a grade-point average of 3.2 and will graduate from high school at the end of the week, defense lawyer Bill Honsowetz said in court.

"He has learned his lesson," Honsowetz told Lane County Circuit Judge Karsten Rasmussen.

During five years of probation, Johnson is forbidden from drinking alcohol or remaining anywhere that alcohol is served until he is 21.

He was allowed until July 6 to begin serving his jail sentence, which may include alternative programs such as road crew.

Protective order against Hardy lifted

Posted: Wednesday June 14, 2006 11:53AM

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana University receiver James Hardy will be allowed to see his girlfriend before his trial in August on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.

The woman, the mother of the football player's 7-month-old son, called the dispute a "big misunderstanding" and asked a judge to release Hardy from a protective order that prevented him from contacting her.

Hardy, 20, was arrested last month after police responded to a 911 call at his girlfriend's home. They reported finding her with a torn shirt and reddish marks on the back of her neck. He has pleaded not guilty.

On Tuesday, the girlfriend testified at a hearing that she has never been afraid of Hardy and said she called 911 because she was emotional and trying to "get at him." The two had been arguing, and she said Hardy was trying to defend himself.

"I wasn't willing to listen," she said.

By the time police arrived, Hardy was feeding their son inside the house, she said.

She testified she had completed a class through Allen County's Victims' Assistance related to the removal of the protective order. She said she has been with Hardy for seven years and wanted the order lifted so they could be together as a family.

"We have a good life together," she said. "This is just a big misunderstanding."

After the judge granted the request, Hardy embraced his girlfriend and they walked hand-in-hand from the courtroom.

Hardy's trial is set to begin Aug. 23.
