Michigan's Stonum pleads guilty to reduced driving charge

NN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum has pleaded guilty to operating while visibly impaired.

Stonum accepted the amended charge from operating a vehicle while intoxicated on Friday morning in Ann Arbor's 15th District Court. His plea agreement includes dropping the charge of driving with a suspended licensed when he is sentenced June 10.
Michigan coach Brady Hoke suspended Stonum indefinitely after he was arrested May 6.

When Stonum was a freshman in 2008, he was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. He ended up in the Washtenaw County jail from June 4-7 last year because he didn't comply with terms of his probation.

Anybody at ESPN and/or S/I accuse him of getting preferential treatment on this (because he was a scUM football player) that the average university student would not have gotten?

I'm surprised he was able to get reduced charges when he showed up intoxicated and was driving the vehicle inside the 15th District Court. How'd he get the car in there?

Perhaps that's not what they meant. :tongue2:

Oregon corner Cliff Harris was cited for driving 118 mph on a suspended license.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris has been cited with driving 118 mph on a suspended license.
Oregon State police say Harris, 20, was pulled over after an off-duty trooper spotted him about 4:35 a.m. PDT Sunday on Interstate 5 south of Albany, Ore. An on-duty officer clocked Harris and pulled him over.
Harris was cited for driving with a suspended license and exceeding the speed limit in excess of 100 mph. Police say he was driving a rental car.
The fine for driving a vehicle faster than 100 mph is $1,148.
Harris excelled as a sophomore last season at cornerback and on special teams. He had six interceptions and set an Oregon record with four punt returns for touchdowns.
Known for his entertaining banter with reporters, Harris dubbed the BCS championship "The Natty." Oregon lost to Auburn in the title game in January after going 12-0 last season.

Deshon Marman arrested at airport

SAN FRANCISCO -- A New Mexico football player's saggy pants led to his arrest at San Francisco International Airport, police said.

Sgt. Michael Rodriguez said 20-year-old Deshon Marman, a safety for the Lobos, was boarding a flight Wednesday to Albuquerque, N.M., when a U.S. Airways employee noticed his pants were "below his buttocks, but above the knees, and his boxer shorts were showing."

Rodriguez told the San Francisco Chronicle that the employee asked Marman to pull up his pants, but he refused. She then asked him to leave the plane.

U.S. Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder says the airline's dress code forbids "indecent exposure or inappropriate" attire.

The officer says that after 15 minutes, Marman got off the plane and was charged with trespassing, battery and resisting arrest. He was being held on $11,000 bail, according to the newspaper. His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Perhaps any discussion on the merits of this particular arrest should go to the Horseshoes & Handgrenades forum?

Someone needs to remind G-funk that the '90s ended over a decade ago. Then again, he does play for New Mexico...

Ex-Iowa DB sentenced to jail for assault

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A judge sentenced a once-promising Iowa football player Friday to one week in jail for a 2007 assault on a female student-athlete, saying he should be ashamed of his actions in a case that caused a university-wide scandal. District Judge Paul Miller ordered Cedric Everson to serve the seven-day sentence at the Johnson County Jail. He gave Everson until July 15 to report so that he can finish summer classes at a community college in Detroit as he seeks to return to college athletics.

Jurors convicted Everson, who turns 22 next week, of simple misdemeanor assault in January after finding him innocent of charges that could have brought lengthy prison terms.

Miller warned Everson not to take solace in the verdict.

"Regardless of the level of crime the jury convicted you of, you should be ashamed of your conduct that resulted in the conviction for assault," Miller told Everson. "You came here to Iowa City as a football player for the University of Iowa. You were looked up to by people throughout the state of Iowa."

In a brief statement, Everson quietly told Miller that he wanted to apologize to the woman for his actions and wished her the best.
...

Prosecutors said Everson sexually assaulted a freshmen athlete who was passed out after his then-teammate Abe Satterfield did so first in a Hillcrest Residence Hall room.

The woman, who chose not to appear at Friday's sentencing, testified at trial she ended up in the room with Satterfield after a night of drinking, and he forced intercourse against her wishes. She said she woke up the next morning naked and covered in blood and didn't find out Everson had also assaulted her until weeks later, after he bragged about the encounter to teammates.

Illinois D-Lineman Chris Jones, who has a previous felony conviction for cocaine possession, is now charged with battery against a gay couple that he apparently outweighs. It's not being filed as a 'hate crime', although that was a possibility. Jones claims that he was retaliating for being attacked by the two guys a few days earlier.

Illinois DL charged with battery in potential hate crime

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- An Illinois football player arrested in an attack that police say may have been motivated by the victims' sexual orientation has a previous felony conviction for cocaine possession.

Chris Jones, a 20-year-old freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., faces an aggravated battery charge but has not yet entered a plea after a brief initial court appearance Tuesday, police and court officials said.

Jones was arrested just after midnight Sunday after two men reported that he punched them outside a local bar, Champaign police Deputy Chief Troy Daniels said. The men said Jones, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound defensive lineman, had been in a car that had just driven by them.

"The occupants of the vehicle were calling out slurs based on their sexual orientation," Daniels said, explaining that the men said they were a couple.

The men -- a 19-year-old who stands 5-9 and weighs about 140 pounds and a 28-year-old who is 5-9 and weighs roughly 165 pounds -- had minor facial injuries, Daniels said.

Jones, told police he was retaliating for an attack by the men earlier in the week, Daniels said.

Jones has been assigned a public defender but a message left with that office by the Associated Press was not returned Tuesday. Jones, who was being held on $100,000 bond, did not respond to an e-mail from the AP.

Jones won't be charged with committing a hate crime in spite of the alleged circumstances because aggravated battery carries a longer possible sentence -- two to five years rather than one to three -- Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said.
