Three incoming UCLA freshmen arrested for theft

LOS ANGELES -- Three incoming UCLA football players have been arrested on suspicion of felony theft.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department records show Joshua Shirley, Shaquille Richardson and Paul Richardson -- all 18-year-old freshmen -- were arrested on the UCLA campus Wednesday, booked at a county jail and released early Thursday morning.

Shaquille Richardson and Paul Richardson posted $20,000 bail each and Shirley was released without posting bail, the records showed.

A UCLA police watch commander said Saturday he has no immediate information on the arrests or the alleged crimes.

Shaquille Richardson is a cornerback from Los Alamitos, Paul Richardson is a wide receiver from Gardena, and Shirley is a linebacker from Fontana.

ESPN: Police report details Georgia AD's arrest

University of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans repeatedly referred to his position at the school before his arrest on a drunken driving charge and asked the patrol officer if there was "anything you can do without arresting me," according to a police report released Friday.

"I am not trying to bribe you but I am the athletic director of the University of Georgia," Evans said, according to the officer identified in the report as M. Cabe.

The officer also said that Evans asked to be taken to a motel instead of jail or to be let off with a warning. According to the report, Evans later said: "I am not trying to bribe you, but is there anything you can do without arresting me?"

In the report, the officer noted he found a "red pair of lady's panties between [Evans'] legs." When he asked Evans, a 40-year-old married father of two children, what he was doing with the underwear, Evans said: "She took them off and I held them because I was just trying to get her home," according to the report.

Evans returned to campus Thursday to discuss the arrest in front of a roomful of media, Georgia coaches and administrators, and his wife Kerri and two children. The athletic director apologized, noting ?It?s going to take a while for me to earn your trust back and it should and I don?t know if I ever will. But I will do everything in my power to make you believe in me once again.?


His new contract, which was signed in April but took effect on July 1, boosted his pay to $550,000 this year, and each year for the next five years he will get an automatic $20,000 raise, which will give him a salary of $630,000 by 2014. He will receive a $250,000 longevity bonus if he remains in the job when the contract expires in 2015.


Also included in the contract is the use of two cars and a country club membership ?at a mutually agreed upon golf or country club.? (link)

Former USF running back Mike Ford arrested - Bright House Sports Network

SARASOTA --
The Sarasota Sheriff's office arrested former USF running back Mike Ford and charged him with domestic battery. The arrest took place mid-afternoon yesterday.

Ford ran for 207 yards in the Bulls 27-3 victory against Northern Illinois in the International Bowl, and was voted the MVP. Last year he was arrested for driving a moped without a license, and in 2007 he was arrested for an outstanding warrant on another driving infraction.

USF head coach Skip Holtz dismissed Ford in February for violating team rules. While he would not give specifics, Holtz said in a statement: "I am disappointed for Mike more than anything else. I hope that he learns some important life lessons from this experience at USF."

At that time, Ford issued his own statement, apologizing to his family, friends and fans. "I am responsible for my own actions. Please forgive me for I am only human."

No bond is available. Ford will be arraigned on July 19.

ESPN analyst arrested in Conn on child porn charge

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) ? Jeremy Green, an analyst for ESPN and son of former NFL coach Dennis Green, has been arrested on child pornography charges in Connecticut.
Bristol police say Green was picked up on Thursday at about 5 p.m. inside a Southington hotel and charged with possession of child pornography, possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was being held on a $750,000 bond. Police would not release any details about the crime, saying the warrent had been sealed.
There was no telephone listing for Green at his address in Bristol, and it was not immediatly clear if he had hired a lawyer.

Hawkeye football's Binns arrested on OWI charge

Iowa football player Broderick Binns was arrested early Friday after allegedly driving drunk two weeks before his 21st birthday.

Binns, a 20-year-old defensive end, was arrested by University Heights police at 12:57 a.m. Friday at Benton Street and Greenwood Drive.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement that Binns will receive counseling, attend an educational program and receive ?some form of suspension? as a result of his arrest.

Police stopped Binns after observing the vehicle he was driving go straight through a left turn lane and for an equipment violation.

Binns initially denied drinking, but eventually admitted to having several drinks, police said. Binns also was wearing a wristband from a bar to indicate he was of legal drinking age.

Police said Binns had watery eyes, smelled of alcohol and displayed impaired speech and balance.

Binns, who turns 21 on July 23, failed a preliminary breath test with a blood-alcohol content of .097 ? above the legal limit of .08 to operate a motor vehicle in Iowa, police said. A breath analyzer later showed Binns? blood-alcohol content to be .101, according to records.

Tennessee dismisses one, suspends two after bar brawl

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Two Tennessee players were charged during an early morning bar brawl that left an off-duty police officer who tried to break up the fight knocked unconscious, and more could be facing charges, police said Friday.

Incoming freshman receiver Da'Rick Rogers was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Knoxville police said. Rising sophomore defensive back Darren Myles Jr. was charged with assault, resisting arrest and evading arrest, University of Tennessee police said.

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley dismissed Myles from the team Friday evening and indefinitely suspended sophomore linebacker Greg King and sophomore defensive tackle Marlon Walls, though it was not clear what their alleged roles were in the matter.

A campus police report said Myles tried to hide under a car and in some bushes as an officer tried to arrest him, then elbowed the officer in the face. It was the second offseason arrest for Myles, 19. He also was charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest on April 18 after a disturbance at a Knoxville restaurant and nightclub.

"It is a privilege, not a right, to be a member of the University of Tennessee football team," Dooley said in a statement.

"The most important responsibility of that privilege is to properly represent this institution and our supporters on and off the field," the statement added. "I am disappointed and in many ways embarrassed by the poor judgment displayed on many fronts by several members of our football team last night."

Three other players -- rising senior receiver Denarius Moore, junior college transfer defensive tackle John Brown and incoming freshman receiver Matt Milton -- were detained and questioned but had not been charged as of Friday afternoon. Another player, rising sophomore defensive tackle Montori Hughes, was present but has not been questioned by police.
Police said their investigation was ongoing.

Robert Capouellez, an off-duty Knoxville officer who was a patron at Bar Knoxville and tried to break up the fight, was being treated for a head injury after being knocked unconscious, Knoxville police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said.

Capouellez, 24, was in serious but stable condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center on Friday afternoon. Police said he was hit in the head, knocked to the ground and then kicked several times.

Another patron at the 18-and-up bar, Gary Russell, 20, was treated at UT Medical Center and released.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Atlanta native who was part of Lane Kiffin's only recruiting class showed promise during spring practice. After the Vols' April 17 spring game, he was awarded the program's Fourth Quarter Award by coaches for dedication to the program.

The 18-year-old Rogers, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound native of Calhoun, Ga., was among Dooley's first signing class.
