Hello from Rutgers,

Im new to this board obviously and hopefully you dont mind outsiders. First off even though RU is coming off its worst loss that anyone can remember we are still excited...
1-that we are going to join your conference next year
2-that you embarrassed Penn State!

That being said...
Ive got a group looking to go to Columbus next year for our game against you guys. It will be all of ours (except for 1) first time!

Can I ask for some help?
What are the best hotels to stay at?
Whats the best general location to stay at?
Were gonna drive so hows the parking/tailgating situation?

I know you guys have more pressing matters (like chasing a national championship) but I like planning these trips the earlier the better.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I usually try to stay at the Fairfield Inn & Suites on Olentangy River Road. It's about a 1.5-2 mile walk to the stadium, but it gives you the change to pass the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, the Schottenstein Center, Tailgating areas, St. John Arena (Skull Session) and access to Lane Avenue/High Street.

If you plan on staying anywhere near The Shoe, book your room EARLY. If you don't, good luck finding anywhere within walking distance.

Welcome to BP. I live like 30 miles from the Shoe, so I don't really stay in Cbus. I'd recommend getting in the night before and going to The Varsity Club for some beers. Get up early Sat and just take it all in. Game days in Columbus are special.

Also, what Deety said. I don't know a lot about Rutgers. I'd like to know more, but I'd like to hear it from a Rutgers fan.

Welcome to the B1G. I take it you are coming from NJ. I tend to arrive on Friday afternoons and stay in the Dublin area. Then head down to campus around 530 am. Tailgating starts early and the good spots are gone by 7 am. Check out the agricultural bldg area. Expect to see the typical grill/generator/satellite tv tailgaters. If you want to walk around campus, don't go past High St. That is the 36th parallel. No idea what could be brewing there (fraternities/off campus). There are plenty of good sites and buildings to check out, if you're interested in checking out other universities.

But as long as your group is not brash or out of control, you'll probably have some visitors stop by and inquire about RU in general. And if you ask people around your spot, they'll point you in various directions and options.

Like others have said, any Rutgers info would be much appreciated. I have family in NJ and thought about making the trip out for that game in 2015 as well. So any advice there would be helpful.

Thanks for the help guys - but Im not sure what stay in Dublin means (outside of the fact that I know its a suburb of Columbus). Any specific hotels? Is it walking distance to bars for after the game?

Id be glad to give u info on Rutgers but what do you mean? Do you mean on the team and its coverage or do you mean gameday type stuff?

I'd recommend the arena district - though it's not walking distance to the game, there are plenty of bars / restaurants for after the game. This will be a late 20's-40's crowd. I travel there for business on occasion and stay at the Courtyard on Spring St. Cab to and from the game required. This way you can hit some of the campus tailgate / bars before and after, and there are also lively spots around the hotel for later.

If you want to walk and be close to campus the entire time / hit campus type bars all night afterwards, the Blackwell is a beautiful hotel on campus, but will be expensive and fill up quickly on game day. The previously mentioned Fairfield is a couple of miles away - getting to the game isn't an issue - lots of campus bars / tailgating to walk through. Getting back might warrant a short cab ride, but you can walk to a small bar called Woody's from the hotel for a nightcap - a hole in the wall campus type bar. hope this helps, and we look forward to the Rutgers discussion. I'd like to hear the fans perspective on the team, the coaching, strengths / weaknesses, and some history. Some of us will likely look for gameday advice when we are playing there.

Any and all Rutgers info. Like traditions and such. Are you guys happy with your coach? Offensive and Defensive philosophies? How seriously does the average RU fan take college hoops compared to football. If you guys are big hoops fans, I can imagine entering the B1G could help recruiting NY and New England a great deal. Basically stuff I can't read on wiki.

I made reservations for Hyatt Place on Parkcenter Cir in Dublin for a basketball game later this year. 1 night stay about $100.

If football season, expect to get up early and travel up 270N over to 315 and onto the stadium.

As far as Rutgers info goes, just some insight into what makes the football program what it is. Any traditions most fanbases don't know about or weird traditions.

Tbh as long as your car isn't boasting Rutgers markings it's pretty easy to find free parking along North 4th St. And really the worst you will face is a bit of obnoxious college kids.

Thanks for all those replies guys. Ill be more active on this board if its desired I just dont want to overstep my bounds and I know some boards are more welcoming than others. I got run off a Nebraska board being called a troll one day for telling them last year that 10 wins was a good season!

Anyway - our team. Well obviously Greg Schiano made Rutgers. Without him we would be stuck in who knows where. You probably know that we played in the first college football game ever played against Princeton hence our stadium's nickname "the birthplace of college football". If you do come there is a statue outside the stadium commemorating the game. Pretty cool.

The team this year - some diehards are pissed and think "we suck" and to be honest I was hoping for 10 wins but it seems 7 or 8 plus a bowl is more realistic. We lost 5 (yes 5) DBs to the NFL draft last year and our pass coverage has been awful (no surprise I guess).

Head Coach Kyle Flood. I personally think he's okay. I dont think hes great. You do get mixed reactions from RU fans on him. He was a long time asst under Schiano and Flood was rushed to the job when Schiano left for TB with one week before signing day. But Flood held a great (for our standards it was consensus top 25) recruiting class together and Flood wins and coaches with class which matters to many. No probation or anything like that on the horizon. Please this is not a shot at the recent OSU stuff. Its just the reality. Im not trolling.

OC/DC stuff. Rutgers offense has been much improved this year. Ron Prince (former KSU head coach and KSU/UVA OC) is in his first year and has done a good but not great job so far. Our DC is Dave Cohen who is in his first year and is in way over his head. He needs to be replaced at the end of the year.

I dont want to ramble but is this the kinda stuff you are looking for? I can post more about history/rivalries/coaching and looking forward to Big Ten if you guys want but I dont want to "Flood" you with long posts.
