2024 NFL training camp: Position battles on each depth chart
Pittsburgh Steelers
Quarterback
Though Russell Wilson entered training camp in "pole position" and it appeared the starting job would be his job to lose, Wilson's conditioning test calf injury makes things interesting for the Steelers.
With Wilson slowly ramping up, Justin Fields has taken nearly all of the first-team reps, and his best practice came in the team's first padded practice Tuesday where he completed every pass attempt. Not only did he connect with George Pickens on a one-handed touchdown grab, but he also showed off his wheels in a couple of designed runs. Wilson is still likely in the lead for the job, but if Fields can make routine -- and splash -- plays consistently, this might be more of a competition than it initially appeared.
From the Bleacher Report:
NFL Rumors: Steelers 'Open-Minded' on Russell Wilson, Justin Fields QB1 Battle
The Pittsburgh Steelers are "open-minded" about the possibility that Justin Fields will beat out Russell Wilson for the starting quarterback job this fall, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.
"Fields definitely has work to do to catch Wilson in the race for the starting job, but the Steelers are open-minded about his ability to do so," Graziano wrote.
Graziano noted that the Steelers have not offered a major financial commitment to either signal caller. The team is paying Wilson a base salary of $1.21 million, while Fields is playing for $1.62 million next season.
"The important thing to keep in mind here is that the Steelers have no prior connection to either of these quarterbacks and no compelling financial commitment that would lead them to favor one over the other," Graziano wrote. "So when they say it's an open competition and Fields has a chance, believe them."

Just sayin': Apparently Justin Fields is looking pretty good and is definitely in the competition for QB1 with the Steelers.
