Pittsburgh Pirates 2015 season (mostly Jake talking to himself)

Melancon is just awful. The Pirates will never win anything with him as their closer.

He was fantastic the last 2 years. They made the playoffs both times and he wasn't the reason they lost in either post season.

But yeah, he's stinking up the joint thus far in 2015.

Whether he lost the series for the Pirates in the past two seasons is immaterial to my belief that the Pirates won't win anything with him as their closer. As for last year, his ERA was phenomenal, but he was incredibly shaky at the end of the season--basically the same guy he has been so far this year, working himself into jams when he's brought on to close out a game. Only difference is last season he always found a way to bail himself out of those jams. Sooner or later, his luck was bound to run out, and this year it has. Hurdle made a great decision not to bring him in for the 9th of a one-run game last night--I think he has zero confidence in himself right now.

After Tuesday's implosion the Bucs came back to win 4-3 last night and 5-4 today. :pirate:

Watson picked up a two-inning save last night (shades of Kent Tekulve) then Melancon bounced back with an easy 1-2-3 ninth today.

8-8 after 16 games.

The Bucs made some team history in STL over the weekend by losing 3 consecutive extra inning games. Each one was 1-1 after 9 innings but the punchless Buccos - currently 24th or worse in every major hitting category - managed to lose them all.

12-13 through 25 games.

After being the first team to win a series from the Cardinals the Bucs win the first of four in Philadelphia, 4-3. :pirate:

At 16-16 through 32 games the Pirates are ahead of last year's pace (12-20) when they ultimately won 89 games. But with 130 left to play that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Russell Martin's void remains and Josh Harrison is looking like the fluke some of us feared after last year's breakout. We'll see.

Don't forget the supposed closer who made things interesting again tonight, giving up two hits and a gopher ball in one inning of work.

Well, he was pitching on his 3rd consecutive day - something most closers don't do often. I notice you didn't chime in when he went 1-2-3 both of the previous days.

On the year he's 8 for 9 in save chances, hardly the reason the Bucs are floating around .500.

Aaron Harang is now 17-8 vs Pittsburgh and 108-123 against everyone else. It's ridiculous how they struggle against that clown.

Down on the farm, the Indy Indians are hot right now. 5 straight, 8-2 in last 10. Playing great baseball and manufactured a nice comeback last night against Toledo.

Made it out to 3 games already this year. Fun team to watch.

The parent club is on a bit of a roll, too. After a 3 game sweep at San Francisco - don't remember the last time that happened - the Bucs have won 10 of their last 12 to move 5 games over .500 for the first time this season (29-24). On to Atlanta! :pirate:
