Pittsburgh Pirates 2015 season (mostly Jake talking to himself)

Mark Melancon now leads the NL with 22 saves and his ERA is under 2.00, despite the nervous nellies who were crapping their jammies in April when his velocity was a few mph lower than normal. I'm sure they'll pop out of their rabbit holes someday when he blows a save, as all closers do at times.

Eight straight wins puts the Buccos 12 games over .500 at 39-27. Melancon gets his 23rd save as a four game sweep of the Chisox is complete. :pirate:

Melancon has 24 saves in 25 opportunities (leading the NL), his velocity is higher than last year, and his ERA is 1.80. Just as he wasn't the reason the Pirates lost in the playoffs last year, he's not the reason they're in second place this year. But I'm sure these facts are immaterial to your belief as well, as experience has taught me that most people resist any and all facts that contradict their personal feelings on a subject.

Melancon has done well since a shaky start to the beginning of the season, which followed his shaky end to '14 (neither of which are "personal feelings," they're facts). If he can continue to do well, good for him (and the Pirates). We'll see.

Hindsight, as they say, is 20-20.

So a woeful ninth inning by Melancon last night (game was 0-0 when he came in, Pirates were losing 3-0 by the time he left) basically cost the Pirates any chance they had at winning the NL Central. What's worse--because of MLB's ridiculous playoff construct, the second best team in baseball will have to play in the dopey one-game playoff against a pitcher who has a 21-6 record, and an ERA of 0.75 against the Pirates. Ouch.

Cole looks like garbage and Arrieta looks untouchable. Pretty much as badly as this game could've gone for the Pirates. The MLB playoff construct sucks--the team with the 2nd best record in the 162-game series is going to get bounced after one playoff game just because their opponent happens to have one really good pitcher.
