  • I keep hoping some more Bucco fans join and then I remember most of them also root for the Steelers and think again. Gregory Polanco should get his first full season in the majors. Hopefully, the experience last year has him poised to look more like the stud he was coming up through the minor league system. Another rather uneventful offseason compared to the big markets, but losing Russell Martin to the Blue Jays is going to hurt. Getting Cervelli from the Yankees to fill that void is a clear step backwards. AJ Burnett returns for one last hurrah, but the most intriguing signing is Korean middle infielder Jung-Ho Kang.

Pittsburgh won the bid to negotiate with Kang, meaning either the Bucs are out to lunch or they know something the big spenders don't know. He was a monster last season hitting 40 homers and driving in 117 runs (in 117 games) for the Nexen Heroes. Given he only cost the Pirates $25 million all told for a 4 year contract, the 27 year old is a good gamble. If he does half as well in MLB he'll be well worth the money.

I can see the "King Kang" signs and t-shirts, already. :gagnam:

This team is really going to miss Russell Martin. Francisco Cervelli wasn't able to replace Martin in New York so I'm not sure why the Pirates think he can do it in Pittsburgh.

your thoughts on Burnett coming back to Pitt?

The only reason I think he's back is because number two prospect Jameson Taillon needed Tommy John surgery last Spring. JT was projected to be a mid-season call up in 2014 prior to his injury and is still going through the rehab process. Burnett is running on fumes at this point of his career. I hope he can be a serviceable 4th starter but if the Bucs are counting on more than that they're likely to be disappointed.

The biggest flaw in the Pirates' rotation is Charlie Morton as the third starter. They're enamored with what he's like when he's on - ground chuck. He can throw a great sinker, but he can't do it consistently and he always gets hurt (as he is again now). The young pitchers in the minors need to grow up in a hurry.

For a moment I almost thought the Bucs might actually win a game where Cueto started but then Watson gave up the rare bomb. Oh well, only 161 more to go.

The Cubs walk Marte to load the bases with 2 outs in the 7th inning of a 5-5 game and pitch to Kang. Get the "King Kang" signs and t-shirts ready after a 3-run gap shot puts the Bucs up 8-5 - his first XBH and RBI as a Pirate. :gagnam:

Last year if the Pirates had a 3 run lead after 7 innings, especially at home, the game was essentially over. Tony Watson and Mark Melancon were virtually automatic.

So far this year, not so much. Watson hasn't been great but Melancon has been shaky as hell. Tonight's 8-5 lead is gone and Melancon still doesn't have an out yet.
