I'm in the minority who wanted to add someone to the roster who wasn't turning 40. Seeing him ultimately sign with the Flyers was the icing on the cake - they can overpay for him.

Max Talbot signing with Philly was far more disappointing.

The KHL doesn't count secondary assists (he was at a point per game in the KHL - that's pretty good), and look at the Pens' RW depth. There is none. Tyler Kennedy is a second/third line tweener, I have a hard time believing Jagr would be worse than that. Tangradi has shown nothing at the NHL level, and he's shown more than any other potential top 6 options. Dustin Jeffrey probably won't be ready for opening day. Letestu will probably center the fourth line. Those two guys are the only two with potential top 6 talent that will likely be on the roster/could fill in on RW. Dupuis is not a top 6er but he might get to play as one again.

The Pens did sign Steve Sullivan, so if he can stay healthy he could play wing for Sid or Geno.

Either way, Jagr is still in fantastic condition and a better option than any of those players. I didn't want Jagr because he's Jagr, I wanted Jagr because he's still a good player. He looked good in the most recent Olympics and was 8th in KHL scoring. He still has talent, more than a bottom 6er or tweener. If this were a lifetime KHLer, I'd see your point, but he's not.

I'm kind of offended that you think I'm the guy who wants Jagr because it's Jagr. :(

Talbot contract violates the terms of the CBA. Philadelphia will have to tweak it to bring it in line. Doubt the Flyers will be penalized.

Talbot said when he texted Malkin to tell him he wouldn't be a Penguin anymore, Geno simply responded with "why?" I love Malkin. That is and was all that needs to be said. Other than a reminder that Talbot said he hated Philadelphia. $$$

Pure speculation contrary to recent evidence. The guy put up 19-31 in the Kontinental League last season. He's back in the big boy league now, and he's almost 40.

No offense intended, Numbers, but most of the Pens fans I know fell into that category. Some didn't even know he hadn't played in the NHL for 3 years. I was just playing the odds...and I still think we wouldn't be having this discussion if his name wasn't Jagr. :wink2:

I just think he was the best realistic option available. He priced himself out of Pittsburgh though. His skill and athleticism is still good enough to be a very nice piece alongside Crosby or Malkin, and he'd really help the PP.

So, the Pens have a little over 2MM to spend and may just wait to use it
to acquire someone at the deadline. Maybe they can use some of it to invest in a concussion-proof helmet for Crosby.

With a win, I'd like to add. :biggrin:

Malkin was so-so. Looked like he was trying to do too much. There's some great chemistry with Neal and Sullivan, so that's a good sign. Hard to complain about a 4-3 win in Vancouver for their home-opener.

Malkin did make Luongo look silly for the game-winning shootout goal, though. Not that that's a difficult task. :wink2:

As has been the case for most of 2011, the Pens are playing without Malkin AND Crosby. :smash:

To add to it, they're playing 10% of their entire schedule the first 2 weeks of the season while some teams have only played 3 games. Who wrote that schedule? :lol:

Funny thing is, tonight they got only their 2nd win in their last 11 tries versus Minnesota without Malkin, Crosby, Letang, Kennedy and Orpik. Even Fleury had the night off.

That's why they play the games, I guess. :)

This is still a hard team to beat without Sid & Geno. It's basically a team full of talented grinders. That's just a pain in the ass.

Crosby has been cleared for contact, I figure we'll see him back in a couple weeks. Hopefully the rest of the guys can come back. This is the best roster in the NHL when healthy. I'd love to see everyone healthy + James Neal playing like he is. He's carrying the team's offense.
