Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

This team is on fire. Best team in the NHL right now imo. Crosby is producing at an unbelievable pace.

He has a 16-game point streak and has 33 points (18 goals ) in those games. The Pens are 13-1-2 in those 16 games.

48 points on the season (24 goals) in 29 games. Insane.

Gretsky would have had 78 points by now. :p

Put Crosby in Gretzky's era and so would Sid.

I think he's on pace for 67 goals/135 points. Pretty ridiculous in the current NHL. This is what happens when the best player in the world enters his prime.. now only if his wingers weren't Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis. Kunitz is acceptable. Dupuis is a bottom sixer on pretty much every team in the NHL. It's just even more ridiculous that he's doing this with a second-line winger and a winger who has no hands and can only play well in his zone and on the PK. Imagine if the Pens' power play was worth talking about..

yup, monster numbers. comparable only to numbers guys were putting up in the 80s and early to mid 90s. crosby and the pens have feasted on the se division, and as you mentioned are red hot 9-0-1. should be interesting to see what happens as staal gets healthy.

I hear they're going to have him center the second line with Malkin at the wing. Malkin doesn't play as well at wing though.. but he's been injured this year and is finally taking time off to get healthy. Staal and Malkin have shown a lot of chemistry together, so hopefully that works out.

Letestu has really made Staal's absence tolerable.

Nonsense. There is Gretsky, and then there is a vast empty space. Then there is Mario Lemieux.

Truthfully, and jokes aside, Crosby is an absolute stud no question about it. I don't know how he'd have done in the 80s NHL, but he is one of a handful of players who would ever have given The Great One any kind of run for his money, in my opinion. Lemieux is the other, of course.

Honestly, I have a hard time understanding how the Pens don't win every game they play. Very complete team, in my opinion.

I agree, although I think that empty space isn't as big as most think. I'm clearly biased, but check out these stats.

Gretzky averaged 1.92 PPG. Lemieux 1.88. Gretzky played in over 500 more games than Lemieux. If Lemieux played the same amount of games as Gretzky and kept the same PPG pace, Mario would have only 59 fewer points.

I know it's difficult to use that argument seriously, but it really shows just how close they were in terms of production and dominance.

Lemieux only played in 915 games. Unbelievable. He's the only player in the top 31 scorers of all time with less than 1300 games played, and he's seventh all-time in scoring with 915 games.

If they play at their best, there are only a couple teams that I think could give them a good game/beat them. Detroit and Philadelphia.

The biggest thing for the Pens this year (other than Crosby) is the offense they're getting from their blue line. I know I'm going to sound like a major homer here, but really, trust me.. Letang is playing Norris caliber defense and has 26 points in 28 games.

the thing is though, 500 games is over five years of deep playoff hockey, thats a lot of wear, tear and tread to burn. gretz put up 130+ for over a decade, with a serious chunk of that time at 160+ and what five years at or in the ball park of 200 points, unreal. both were great players, personally im not really into comparing players like that. id take either one in my sweater if i had to win a game/series.

letang can play, hes playing a much better game at both ends of the ice. many people are aware of this and if he keeps it up hell get the exposure needed playing on the pens to get mention/consideration.

I definitely agree. Gretzky is the best, no question about it. But Mario is right up there imo.

I'm lucky to have seen him in person.

The thing that amazes me most about Gretsky's career stats is that if you take away every single one of his goals (which, as you know, is the highest number of goals by a single player all time) he is still one of only 11 other players with over 1,000 career points (and he'd be 7th all time in front of Yzerman)

But, the following speaks volumes about the pair of them:

NHL Single Season Points Leaders

Rk..Player.........Team.................PTS..Year
1...Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......215..1985-86
2...Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......212..1981-82
3...Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......208..1984-85
4...Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......205..1983-84
5...Mario Lemieux..Pittsburgh Penguins..199..1988-89
6...Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......196..1982-83
7...Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......183..1986-87
T8..Wayne Gretzky..Los Angeles Kings....168..1988-89
T8..Mario Lemieux..Pittsburgh Penguins..168..1987-88
10..Wayne Gretzky..Edmonton Oilers......164..1980-81
11..Wayne Gretzky..Los Angeles Kings....163..1990-91
12..Mario Lemieux..Pittsburgh Penguins..161..1995-96
13..Mario Lemieux..Pittsburgh Penguins..160..1992-93
14..Steve Yzerman..Detroit Red Wings....155..1988-89

The Pens struggled a bit early in the season with the new defense pairings but once those guys settled in and they stopped giving up odd man rushes the offense took flight. Crosby is playing out of his mind right now.
