Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

Jake;1688651; said:
Pens better tighten up defensively in the playoffs, or it is going to be a short run. Giving up too many open chances lately.

In the playoffs, your weaknesses are magnified. :(

Pens first game in Mellon/Civic Arena was a loss to the Canadiens. So was the last one. Looking forward to the new home next season.

Pens seek toilet-flushers for new arena

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking for 250 students to help with an important task and there's only one major requirement: You must know how to flush a toilet.
Construction is near completion on the Penguins' new arena, the Consol Energy Center. But like with any new arena or stadium, officials need to simultaneously flush all the toilets and urinals to make sure everything is working. The Penguins are calling the June 10 event the "Student Flush," a spinoff of their popular ticketing program known as "Student Rush."
Students already involved in the ticketing program can enter for a chance to win. Students must be 18 or older to participate in the flush-apalooza.
In all, there will be 400 flushers, including some construction officials, on hand that day.

The Pens went to PNC park. One of the players hit a home run.. guess who? :p Best baseball player in Pittsburgh.

NHL VideoCenter

Pens will have a better roster this year than they did when they won the cup. They went from having a pretty average (at best) defense last year to having a top 5 defense on paper (added Paul Martin from NJ and Zbynek Michalek from Phoenix). The defense will have more offensive ability than the cup year, but it'll still be interesting to see how they handle the PP without Gonchar.

The additions of Arron Asham from Philly and Mike Comrie for Sid's wing should also help the team. No more Ponikarovsky or Bill Guerin, either, so addition by subtraction there. I figure Comrie's addition means Tangradi won't be on the Pens this year. Fine by me.

Malkin will be moving to wing and Staal will be centering the second line.

Just need Fleury to be better than last year.. if he is, I think we're the cup favorites.. Vancouver is going to be tough.

LOL at Philly's offseason.

I think this Pens team is going to be loads of fun to watch. I expect the lineup to be pretty ridiculous when Staal is healthy.. better than the cup team. More grit and more scoring.

Kunitz/Crosby/Comrie
Tangradi/Staal/Malkin
Cooke/Letestu/Asham
Rupp/Talbot/Adams

We have too many forwards. Dupuis and Kennedy aren't even in this lineup. I really hope Tangradi makes the team, but if he doesn't, I figure Dupuis or Kennedy will fill in that spot. Probably Kennedy. I figure Dupuis will get traded at some point this season.

Defense is going to be awesome. Sounds like it's going to be...

Martin/Letang
Orpik/Michalek
Goligoski/Lovejoy

Goligoski still looks pretty worthless in his own zone, but he has looked pretty good on the PP so far. Great sign with the loss of Gonchar.

Just need Fleury to be consistently solid.. if he does that, I'm expecting the finals again...

NO way we trade Dupuis... He's not going to Yield someone that great in return. With Dupuis though he's so fast, hits a ton, and hussles non stop. For his price he won't be going anywhere anytime this year. We probably won't resign him but trading him makes no sense unless we package him with like a 1st rounder for an elite winger.

Kunitz-Crosby-Comrie
Tangradi-Staal-Malkin
Cooke-Kennedy-Asham
Dupuis-Talbot-Adams

Not bad I must say as a final product. Tangradi will make the team it's just a matter of where he falls. I know when they split the teams up to scrimmage Tangradi was on the top line so obviously he's a top two line talent this year.

You're right though this season will go as far as fluery goes. If he sucks again not only will it be an earlier exit in the playoffs but it may lead us to trade him in the offseason. Whenever we get in the playoffs the one thing that other teams normally have on the Pens is the advantage in Net.

As for Vancouver... Once the playoffs start they'll fall flat again. They won't get past the 2nd round of the playoffs they choke every year.

Dupuis will be a big asset for someone at the deadline, he's great on the PK. Only reason I think it's he who goes is because he has a decent cap hit considering the amount of grinders we have on the team. I'm a big fan of Dupuis, I'd rather have him than Adams and especially Godard, but Adams makes a lot less. And I don't see anyone wanting Godard, because he isn't good.

But yeah, I think he'll be dealt along with a pick for a winger at the deadline. Not just for nothing. He'll be pretty important until Staal gets back.

I will say that I'd be surprised if Letestu doesn't make the team. He's apparently impressed in camp and he's looked excellent so far in the preseason. He was the best forward last night. I thought he looked decent last year, looks like he's really taken another step.

Thoughts on game 1 against Philly..

Good
Tangradi - Was very noticable out there, strong with the puck, safe with the puck, good in front of the net, physical in general. Good showing in a big game for the rookie. Great sign.

Letestu - he's awesome. Plays really hard and has a lot of skill to go along with his grit. I think he'd be awesome with Sid, to be honest. But, I think there's a better option for Sid, and his name is....

Comrie - a huge upgrade over Guerin/Ponikarovsky. I love that he isn't afraid to shoot. When Staal comes back, I hope Comrie plays with Sid. He looks fast enough out there to keep up with Sid, has a good shot and isn't afraid to use it. Seems to be in good position for scoring chances a decent amount, too.

Michalek - he's awesome in every way, I love that we have him.

Goligoski - wasn't awful like I expected.

Fleury - was fantastic, can't help that he was left out to dry on a couple goals, and Philly's first PP goal was just awesome on Philly's part. Not sure the Pens could've done anything about that one.

Kennedy - he was awesome. Probably our best player last night, sadly.

Bad

Pretty much everything else, especially Sid and Letang. Letang had his career-worst turnover and it cost us the game via SH goal by Giroux.

Malkin wasn't great.. had a few awesome shifts and some bad ones as well.

PP was improved, but it looked too hectic to be effective. WHY CAN'T THIS TEAM PLAY ON THE PP?

Was kind of disappointed in Martin. It's not that he had a bad game, he just didn't seem to have much of an impact. He had one really nice play that I can remember, but wasn't really anything special other than that. Probably doesn't deserve to be under the "bad" label, but oh well.

3 games in the books, and our best players are (in order):

Michalek
Martin
Letestu
Tangradi
Kennedy
Goligoski

:so:

Sid looked like Sid for about 10 minutes in the NJ game, but other than that, he's looked uninspired. Malkin has looked better than Sid, but still not as good as he should given his talent level. Fleury has looked great, aside from the two terrible goals he's given up that lost two games for us.

I'm just sad that two rookies have looked better than Sid & Geno. It's good in a sense that Sid & Geno will start playing better, but they need to do it now since Michalek is injured. Probably for a while. Orpik is out too, but I don't think his injury is too serious.

A bottom pairing of Lovejoy and Hutchinson is going to be brutal....

Paul Martin and Michalek are fantastic. Two awesome additions.

DAN BYLSMA, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU PLAYING TALBOT AND COOKE ON THE POWER PLAY???

Crosby
Malkin
Kunitz
Tangradi
Letestu
Kennedy
Comrie

All better options, by far. That's more than enough for two PP lines.

And I didn't even mention Andrew Hutchinson playing d on the power play. At best, an AHL d-man. PLAYING ON OUR POWER PLAY!

This team sucks right now. Nothing else to say. Coaching is worse than the team is playing, though. You'd think that Bylsma would notice that Sid and Geno do not play well together. But we keep rolling out the superstar line. And it never works. Everyone agrees with this who has watched the two play together, it's not even an issue of opinion.

PENS FANS WHERE ARE YOU, I feel like I'm talking to myself. I want to talk Penguins with other people too.

Game 7 of the season is underway.. with a period left, Crosby, Malkin and Letestu all have a goal and an assist each. Letestu at this point is a PPG player, and it doesn't look like a fluke. We have a real diamond in the rough with him. He's been the best forward on the team this year. He's always in the right spot, always makes good decisions. I can't remember him making any mistakes from what I've seen. I'd still like to see him get a shot on Sid's wing though. We'd have legitimate wingers for both Sid and Geno at that point. We have enough grinders to fill the bottom 6.

Kunitz/Crosby/Letestu
Tangradi/Malkin/Comrie
Cooke/Talbot/Kennedy
Rupp/Adams/Dupuis

Bump Talbot down to the 4th line when Staal comes back, scratch Adams. Tangradi has looked too good to send back down.
