How about turning your phone off altogether and then check your messages at break or after class? Does it really need to be on vibrate during class?

Yes, that was the debate. If you are under the impression that there may be a phone call in which you must be aware of, it is ok to have you phone on vibrate. Simply slipping the phone out of your pocket or purse to see who is calling will not disrupt the class whatsoever. I think at least 90% of students put their phone on vibrate in class. As for answering in the middle of class, that is completely different.

I think a vibrating phone is still distracting. Just because it's on vibrate doesn't mean that the class can't hear it (esp. in a small class).

That depends on the phone. I do know what you are talking about. There are some phones that mine as well be on full ring with how loud they vibrate. That is a different situation. How about this. If you can access your phone without distracting anyone than it should be ok. But regardless, there are situations in which a student will need to notified while in class, and should be allowed to. But just be respectful about it.

LOL I know. It's ridiculous. It almost sounds like a ring tone. It is so loud you can hear it through their bag easily. Then the best part, is where they looked embarrassed, but then proceed to look at the phone and see who is calling/texting.

that was also when people didn't call others for every stupid little thing. if one had been called while in a, say, high school class, it would have assuredly been an emergency. that's not the case anymore with cell phone usage.

I agree. I'm just saying that if an emergency came up, the class is getting interrupted. With or without cell phones.

an emergency that disrupts the class is not what is being discussed here, though. no one would be upset if a true emergency disrupted the class. the guy who received the phone call in that video certainly did not have an emergency.
