Phoenix Suns (Official Thread)

shaq or no shaq they have to take better care of the ball in the final two minutes of the game and not take poor shots. same thing happened against the spurs a couple weeks ago. oh well, that was fun to see the suns put a true big on the court for the first time in my life. i have a feeling its only going to get better. how awesome is amare now that he's playing his true position, btw?

Looks like the Quinton Ross trade might go through. Apparently for Alando Tucker and a pick.

Hmm, then they'll still need to sign someone to fill that roster spot. I like Tucker, but he hasn't picked up the system yet. Strawberry has far exceeded him in earning mins. Hopefully Ross can play some tough D.

Yeah, Ross has always looked good on defense. I think they are bringing him in to help with defense. Chris Paul could be the difference maker this postseason. He will give any team problems. He looked good against Kidd last night.

Barry, 36, is making $5.5 million this year and is in the final year of his contract. He averaged 7.3 points per game this year and shot 43 percent from 3-point range with the Spurs. He could be an ideal fit for Phoenix, given that defenses may sag inside to try to stop Shaquille O'Neal.

Even if the Suns swing a deal for Ross, that wouldn't keep them from going after Barry. Sources say the team would either add him as a 14th player or cut loose one of the veteran minimum players on the team (Sean Marks, Eric Piatkowski, etc.).

I'd be so happy picking up Barry and Ross.

Well, the real problem I saw last night was the last 40 seconds, I expected the Suns to start fouling sooner but they didn't. If any team can foul, and then make a quick 3 it's the Suns.

There's going to be an adjustment period, the team you saw last night won't be the Suns team going into the playoffs. They have to figure the best way to utilize Shaq, and get him worked into that offense. That dunk of his last night off of the inbound pass reminded me of what he was like when he was in LA. I knew that was coming, everyone on the court did too, yet there was nothing that could stop it. Vintage Shaq.

Pursuing Barry a priority for Suns

Phoenix is in full pursuit of 36-year-old swingman Brent Barry after Seattle released him Friday.

The SuperSonics trimmed their bulging roster after acquiring Barry in this week's Kurt Thomas trade with San Antonio.

But the Suns won't be the only party interested in Barry; the Spurs figure to try bringing him back. San Antonio must wait 30 days before it can re-sign Barry but could offer more money with a midlevel exception available. Barry and his family live in San Antonio.

Phoenix or any other NBA team besides the Spurs can sign Barry as early as Tuesday. It is unclear whether the Suns would go beyond a veteran's minimum deal to acquire Barry, who has made $5.6 million this season and has been out for a month because of a calf strain.

The Suns' best hope is that the trade irked Barry and that he can be convinced to come to the Suns and fill a role like James Jones once played with them.
Barry, a 40.7 percent career 3-point shooter, could be that extra player to spread the floor and add offense off the bench. He is not as good defensively as Jones but is a better ball-handler and playmaker.

I think he ends up back in San Antonio... but it would be great get Brent.

And by the way.... Welcome to the West, C's.

only second quarter, but Shaq looks awful against Detroit right now.

Not getting back on defense, took a poor flagrant 2 penalty instead on making an easy play on the defender. Missing clsoe shots.

Obviously the big fella needs to get into shape, but as good as he looked against the Lakers the other night, he looks that bad against the Pistons.

Well, talk about a hell-run, Lakers, Celtics and Pistons, all teams who are leaders or second place in their conferences. I didn't really expect a 30 point ass kicking by the Pistons, but it's still not exactly three teams you want to be "experimenting with a new offense" with.

For sure a tough stretch. I was just pointing out how awful he looked. Obviously very tired from that stretch of games. More than a ahndful of times he didn't evenmake it past half-court to play defense. In his defense, neither did Amare.

And Dallas, New Orleans and Golden State as the 3 games before the break.

Still way too early to make any ligate opinion........but it hasn't been looking so hot.

They only had 73 FG attempts against New Orleans. They generally get that in 3 quarters. They have had to slow the tempo down to adjust for Shaq.

Thus far in their 3 losses with Shaq, he is averaging over 30 minutes a game. Far from the 25 a game Steve Kerr said he would get.

Obviously too early to tell how this will turn out, but I really dislike Phoenix changing it's game to accomadate Shaq. They need to work him into their system rather than changing their system to accomadate him.

Brent Barry will not be playing for Phoenix.

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said the 36-year-old guard told him tonight that he chose San Antonio over Phoenix, as well as suitors like Boston, Dallas and Houston. Barry cleared waivers Tuesday after being traded by San Antonio last week to Seattle, which released him Friday to set off a week of recruiting.

Barry will not be able to sign a deal with San Antonio until March 21 because NBA rules prohibit a player from re-signing with a team that traded him until 30 days after the deal was

No shocker here.... On to Gordon Girichek

Suns held off the Trailblazers tonight. They were up 23 at one point.... to let it dwindle down to a 2 point lead with about 4 mins to go. Some tough calls for the Blazers down the final stretch, and then Suns win by 5. 97-92

Girichek played a little tonight...but didn't do anything.

Suns and Shaq will be just fine....they just need to get focused and play harder and smarter. They let the Blazers back in tonight.

Suns win 5th straight. Shaq had 15pts and 16 boards. Amare added 24 and Nash 22. Looks like they are starting to come together. Rockets on Saturday, then Boston on Wednesday. This will be a tough stretch.

I am going to the Nets game next Saturday to see the big cactus up close and personal!
