Phoenix is in full pursuit of 36-year-old swingman
Brent Barry after Seattle released him Friday.
The SuperSonics trimmed their bulging roster after acquiring Barry in this week's
Kurt Thomas trade with San Antonio.
But the Suns won't be the only party interested in Barry; the Spurs figure to try bringing him back. San Antonio must wait 30 days before it can re-sign Barry but could offer more money with a midlevel exception available. Barry and his family live in San Antonio.
Phoenix or any other
NBA team besides the Spurs can sign Barry as early as Tuesday. It is unclear whether the Suns would go beyond a veteran's minimum deal to acquire Barry, who has made $5.6 million this season and has been out for a month because of a calf strain.
The Suns' best hope is that the trade irked Barry and that he can be convinced to come to the Suns and fill a role like
James Jones once played with them.
Barry, a 40.7 percent career 3-point shooter, could be that extra player to spread the floor and add offense off the bench. He is not as good defensively as Jones but is a better ball-handler and playmaker.
