Both have put on some muscle and just appear more comfortable. He's also tenacious on defense, which is something Matta will have to exploit in the frontcourt this year with arguably the best all around defender in the conference with Craft.
More DispatchIn retrospect, Shannon Scott cannot be blamed for feeling ? and playing ? as he did for much of last season as a freshman.
He was Aaron Craft?s backup, which meant his minutes on the Ohio State basketball team would be few behind an ironman point guard that coach Thad Matta was reluctant to rest. As a result, Scott said he played anxiously because he wanted to make something happen fast, but also cautiously because he didn?t want that something to be bad.
?I was probably thinking about not turning the ball over too much,? he said. ?I was trying to make sure every (pass) was a perfect pass.
?Now, I?m just being free and letting it go.?
And still not turning it over.
Scott?s playmaking on offense and his ability to stalk opposing ballhandlers on defense have made him one of the early-season pluses on a Buckeyes team that is still finding out how much it is going to be able to count on Scott and four sophomore teammates who were rated the sixth-best recruiting class in the nation in 2011.
As Matta said he would before the season, he has moved Craft, a junior and preseason all-Big Ten pick, off the ball more to make room for Scott, whose 33 assists and five turnovers compute to a 6.6-to-1 ratio that is by far the best among Big Ten players and is seventh-best nationally.
Scott is playing an average of 19.6 minutes per game, nearly twice what he did as a freshman.
?I could not be happier for Shannon in terms of him just letting go and getting into the flow, having a sixth sense out there of what he needs to bring,? Matta said. ?It?s a lot like I said last year late in the season: We had two attackers out there (in Craft and Scott together). I love the completeness of that unit.?
