Amedeo's summer vacation
Amedeo Della Valle isn?t with his Ohio State teammates this summer as they juggle early-morning conditioning workouts, classes and open-gym games on campus.
The sophomore guard returned home a couple of weeks ago to train and play for Italy in the 20-and-under FIBA European Championship. The tournament begins July 9 and ends July 21 in Tallinn, Estonia, across the Baltic Sea from Sweden and Finland.
?Man, I miss the Italian. Locker room is quiet w/o the homie,? Sam Thompson wrote on his Twitter account yesterday.
Della Valle tweeted back that he missed Thompson, too. But he has unfinished business in the tournament.
Two years ago, he was Italy's leading scorer (15.1 points per game) in the 18-and-under championship, but he was injured and could not play in a six-point loss to Serbia in a semifinal and played only two minutes and did not score in a four-point loss to Turkey in the third-place game. The Italians went home without a medal.
Della Valle is hoping to come back to Ohio State with one this summer.
Italy opens pool play July 9 against France. Host Estonia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic also are in its group.
