PG P.J. Hill (BK JEKABPILS- Latvia)

This is just terrible coaching to me...Not using guys like Hill, Z, and Kecman...

I just hope people aren't upset late in the season when Guys like Diebler, Buford, Lighty, Turner don't have legs underneath them...

We continue to see it every year under Matta, and we see guys transfer out that don't get playing time...

Hyperbole much?

There are things I wish Matta would do differently, but I'd never characterize his actions as "terrible coaching."

He looked like he was in uniform to me...just didn't get in the game.

That did seem awkward to me as well. After being the first PG off the bench and playing an average of 12 minutes a game the past 4 games(including 15 against UNC) to go to 0 minutes in a game they were up by 10-15 the entire game?

Simmons shot the 3-ball very well and was very effective the minutes he was in so I don't question Thad's coaching, but I did find myself wondering where PJ's minutes were like FCollins Buckeye as the game got into the latter stages. PJ has continued to show that spark and energy off the bench that every team needs to be successful.

Thad doesn't typically shorten the bench until Big 10 season rolls around. Do you think it's b/c of the quality of OOC games and step up in competition they have on the schedule this year?

Men's basketball: OSU looking for spark from Hill
Sunday, January 3, 2010
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For an entire offseason, P.J. Hill focused on improving three phases of his game so he could be a trustworthy role player for the Ohio State men's basketball team.

Hill was the Buckeyes' Energizer Bunny on defense, coming off the bench when they needed juice. And as the backup point guard, he needed to take better care of the ball and be a three-point shooter opponents had to account for.

Now the Buckeyes need him to do more than that.

"I need to attack more," Hill said yesterday before the Buckeyes left by bus for their game today at Michigan.

Does anyone know why P. J. Hill is not playing?

There has been several articles written why PJ Hill and others are not in the rotation. Don't feel like finding links, but basically Matta has said that the starters are going to log the majority (or all) of the minutes down the stretch. The rotation is set and stamina is not an issue. Players should be use to playing a lot of minutes by now and coming out because they are tired is not an excuse.

With Turner out earlier in the season the team saw a lot of flux as far as starting personnel goes. The Bucks are entering the home stretch into Tourney time, what we need most is a solid starting 5 that the team can bank on to be the leaders. Points off the bench will be important as we saw today with Lauderdale getting in foul trouble, but at least this team is now beginning to gel and trust each other because now they play so much.

Id say Matta is looking for team ball rather than rotation. He got what he wanted today, everyone made an extra pass and looked for the open guy, rather than selfishly shooting. We have a great coach that knows the fundamentals of the game.

Coach may know fundamentals but I also think it will take more than 5-6 guys (added Madsen since he's getting minutes off the bench) to make a run @ the Big 10 title, conference title and get a few tourney wins. If any of those gaurds get into foul trouble the remainder of the year, does he actually expect to get any production from Simmons and Hill if he needs to play them after sitting them both for the majority of the Big 10 season? There have been opportunities to play guys off the bench during this current Big 10 winning streak, especially in their blow out wins against NW and Minny the last few weeks.

IMO, by playing the starters more, he's just giving them more incentive / exposure to bolt early for the NBA, most notably Turner and Buford. Buford is finding his stroke and turning into a scoring machine.

Personally, I like the energy that P.J. was bringing off the bench and Simmons gives them another solid 3 point shooter on the perimeter. I think both have shown enough good things on the court that warrant a few minutes to spell Turner, Deibler, Lighty or Buford during the game or at least in mop up duty.

In Thad I trust. P.J. just isn't a viable option against good teams due to his limited offensive ability. His defensive intensity is nice, but he just doesn't posses the ball skills to be a Big 10 PG and his shooting is suspect.

I certainly understand the impatience with zero time in a game with a comfortable lead, but if Ohio State is too reach their full potential, they need guys like Lighty, Turner, and Buford to play 30+ minutes. They just don't have the depth to give up that scoring or defense...

I think it's a bit frustrating when guys like PJ, Simmons, Offutt (yes I know where he isn't) or others can't steal minutes with a healthy lead against an inferior opponent. Yesterday wasn't one of those times however, Iowa was hanging around.

The failure on Matta's part was in recruiting a point guard behind Conley. No one including Mike dreamed that he would be gone that soon, and so three great recruiting classes were handcuffed by that unexpected departure. We were prepared for the bigs to leave, even the wings. But between Mike & Anthony's 1.5 years at OSU, Matta was left with a bad hand.

Since Conley left OSU has had an All Big 10 calibur point guard 2 of the 3 years. OSU has the best pg in the big 10, bigger problem is the center position and no backups who bring as much as the starters. Most teams have questions who will be the starter, because the backups are on the same level, maybe they are better passers, or stronger rebounders, but the starters on this team are far and away the best 5. Because of that, they have to play as much as possible.

He actually shoots 39% from three. A little better than Buford and just a little less than Jon. I don't really disagree with you, (he's also taken way less shots then those two) but I don't mind it when he lets a three-ball fly. I don't think PJ negatively affects the outcome of yesterdays game at all if he's in there for 7-15 minutes, and the starters are going to start feeling some wear and tear soon, especially if they can't find some rest against teams like Iowa.

I think that's what is difficult to understand, though--he's getting less minutes against bad teams than he did against good ones. His minutes this season in some recent games:

@ Purdue -- 4 minutes
vs. Wisconsin -- 14 minutes
vs. PSU -- 0 minutes
vs. Iowa -- 0 minutes

I'm not saying that I think he should be playing 20+ minutes per game, but I have a hard time believing that Hill (or Simmons) getting 6-8 minutes per game and giving, say Diebs, 6-8 minutes of rest wouldn't help our team in the long run.
