Mike Conley, Jr., Ohio State (G, Memphis Grizzlies) "The biggest difference from college and high school to the NBA is the fact that you are your own man, you're a grown man, and you have to make decisions on your own. That's the part I didn't think about as much. You just think about the basketball side of things. But at the end of the day, you're like, 'Man, I gotta manage my bills, I got all these other issues that come with all this money and all the attention, the responsibility of being an NBA player.' It's hard to deal with especially at 19 or 20 years old. Most people don't deal with that until they're 30 or 35 years old, so it's a different kind of world. I had the thought, 'Why didn't I stay in school?' at least 10 or 20 times that first year in the league. I think what got me mentally and physically right was just being able to play. Once I got out there and was able to have fun and not be injured, not be on the sideline watching, it was like what I had dreamed of, what I wanted to be growing up. My motivation to keep getting better and playing well against these great guys. That's what turned it around for me."

Conley Gives to Family in Need
Updated: Tuesday, 27 Dec 2011,

Memphis, Tn - Memphis Grizzlies' point guard Mike Conley dished out some help to a south Memphis family on Tuesday. Conley took the family on a shopping spree for $500 plus bucks. He says it's a move, he's grateful to perform.

"After I heard about the story is when I looked into it more, once I saw the details about it, no question gotta do something about it," said Conley.

Shaketria Frison's family lost everything after a fire destroyed their south Memphis apartment, including Christmas gifts for four kids, each under seven years old.

"Really just struck me, it's devastating to lose everything in a fire, especially around Christmas time," said Conley.

Now, the 24-year old point guard weaves through Target, calling his best plays.

"Anything we can do to help, trust me."

He took the Frison team on a shopping spree, to help fill their home with all the basics.

"People coming out and helping given their all, it's so emotional," said Shaketria Frison, as she wiped away tears.

"Kind of eye opening just to see the necessities and the things people need to live off of," said Conley. "See them smiling in a better mood than they came in, feeling you can't explain."

While Frison says the fire destroyed their home, she's thankful this Grizzly, played Santa.

"Thank him so much for everything, never thought in a million years, he's a blessing."

Grizzlies' Conley rolls ankle

Published December 28, 2011

| Sports Network

Memphis, TN ? Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley suffered an ankle injury on the first play of Wednesday's game against the Thunder.

Conley threw a jump-pass to Marc Gasol and came down on Kendrick Perkins' foot, turning his left ankle at a bad angle in the process.

He stayed on the court for several moments before being helped to the locker room and did not return.

Conley is coming off a career-season in which he averaged 13.7 points and 6.5 assists. He is in his fifth NBA season after Memphis selected the Ohio State product with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft.

Starting point guard Mike Conley will essentially miss a third straight game today with a left ankle sprain as the Griz play on the road against the Chicago Bulls.

Conley hadn't missed multiple games because of injury since his rookie year. In each of the last three seasons, Conley's played in 80 or more games. The last game Conley missed because of injury was Nov. 20, 2009, at Utah because of a left shoulder strain.

Having rookies Jeremy Pargo and Josh Selby step in admirably to fill the void left by Conley has stabilized the guard rotation in the short term. They could loom more important in the long term because Conley wore down physically last season by having to play too many minutes.

Grizzlies postgame: Mike Conley expects to play Tuesday
By Ronald Tillery
Posted January 2, 2012

CHICAGO -- Point guard Mike Conley worked out on the court early Sunday to test the strength in his left ankle.

Conley missed his second straight game with an ankle sprain, but the Grizzlies' starter said he expects to return Tuesday night against the Sacramento Kings.

"I'm feeling better each day. Every morning I wake up I feel better," Conley said. "There's more mobility in my ankle. We're just trying to get the strength back more than anything. It can easily roll again and that's what the trainers are worried about more than anything. But you know me ...I'd rather be out there playing testing it out."

Coach Lionel Hollins said Conley would have played against Chicago if he was allowed. But the Griz are cautious because Conley aggravated the injury a week after it originally happened.

Conley first suffered the ankle sprain Dec. 21 in a preseason game at New Orleans. He continued to play in that game. However, Conley left the Grizzlies' home opener Wednesday just 24 seconds into the game.

Conley said the worst is behind him now that the swelling is gone.

"My best guess is Tuesday," he said. "My mindset was playing (Sunday). I'm always thinking about the next game. I should be ready to go Tuesday."

Conley leads Grizzlies to win
Jan. 17, 2012

Mike Conley delivered a direct message to his Memphis Grizzlies before they played the Chicago Bulls.

"I said, 'Let's not forget what happened,' " Conley recounted from the pregame huddle.

"That was the last thing I said to them: 'That was an embarrassing loss. Let's go out there and just play hard and leave it all out there on the court,' " he said.

Beaten by 40 points by the Bulls on New Year's Day, the Grizzlies bounced back to defeat Chicago 102-86 Monday.

"I thought guys really took that to heart, especially in the first 6 or 7 minutes of the game," Conley said.

Grizzlies? PG Mike Conley Finding Groove
By Don Wade

He?s not Derrick Rose and he?s not Chris Paul. But you know what? That?s not the right comparison for Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley and it never was.

The Grizzlies spent a first-round draft pick (fourth overall) on Conley in the 2007 NBA Draft. And granted, early returns were not encouraging. As long as the Grizzlies weren?t winning, a good portion of the blame was going to fall on the smallish point guard with ordinary numbers.

Then, late in 2010, when the Grizzlies handed Conley a four-year extension for about $45 million, critics turned up the volume. One local sports talk radio host already had made Conley a scapegoat for all that ailed the Grizzlies. But the negative noise wasn?t just local, it was national. A blogger on cbssports.com even said extending Conley?s contract was ?worse than drafting Hasheem Thabeet.?

That might be the single meanest thing ever written about a pro athlete. It was also wildly inaccurate. Not that Conley let it bother him.

?That?s part of the growing process,? he said of the criticism. ?You have to go through ups and downs.?

Grizzlies-Pistons postgame: Mike Conley a calming influence

By Ronald Tillery

Point guard Conley giving Griz a calming influence

O.J. Mayo is on a tear shooting the ball.

Marc Gasol is scoring and rebounding as well as any big man in the NBA.

Rudy Gay has found his scoring touch.

An unheralded part of the Grizzlies' recent success might be Mike Conley's calming influence.

When the Pistons went on a third-quarter run to slice the Grizzlies' 23-point lead to 64-57, Conley righted the ship. The point guard responded with four straight points that pushed their lead back into double digits.

Conley banked in a shot on a runner in the lane, and then stole the ball near midcourt and cruised to the basket for a layup.

"Whenever it gets tight, I think it was Josh Davis who told me that I tend to come up with a bucket or steal or something," Conley said. "I just try not to let some of these games get out of hand."

Conley finished with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go with 11 assists and four steals.

"Mike's been superb," Griz coach Lionel Hollins said. "He's been the director. We're playing really well as a group and we're finding out what our identity is as team."

Mike Conley?s perfect start sent the Memphis Grizzlies to an easy victory.

Conley hit his first eight shots en route to a season-high 22 points as the Grizzlies won their sixth straight and moved atop the Southwest Division with a 128-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night.

?It was just one of those nights where the lane seemed wide open,? said Conley, who finished 10 of 13 from the field. ?All the shots were falling and I had to pick it up for my team, keep us afloat and start us off on a good foot.?
