Mike Conley isn't the NBA's assist king or the subject of its latest hype machine so far this season.

However, Conley always seems to give the Grizzlies just what they need. His style -- quietly going about the business of putting the Griz in good hands -- is again evident during a four-game winning streak.

"It's nice to have a point guard that's solid and has a good feel for what you're trying to do," Griz coach Lionel Hollins said.

The Griz go into a road game tonight against the Houston Rockets with their 6-1 point guard in command on both ends of the floor. Conley is posting 17 points per game on 47-percent shooting during the streak -- up from his season averages of 13.2 points on 43-percent shooting.

The NBA steals leader is also averaging 2.8 steals during that stretch.

"I've got more control of my game than I did the last couple of years," Conley said. "Making big plays down the stretch is something I've improved on. I've done a good job of recognizing when to be aggressive and when to facilitate."

Mike Conley - G - MEM - Mar. 2

Mike Conley scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting (including three treys) with two rebounds, five assists, and three steals in the Grizzlies' win over the Raptors on Friday.
Conley is beasting this season with top-15 fantasy value in 8- and 9-cat formats, while also making the Grizzlies look incredibly smart after they were ripped for signing him to a big deal last year. Marc Gasol added 21 points with five rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in the win.

On the ups and downs of the season:

?Our team has grown a lot. We?ve had to go through a lot of adversity with guys being injured and out of the lineup but I think now we?re starting to hit our stride a little bit. Guys are focused and we?re playing well. I think the Miami game was very big for us and just as big as the Dallas game but I think we?re just getting better as the weeks go on. Hopefully this continues into a big playoff run.?

If he has noticed how difficult the schedule is this year because of how condensed it is:

?You start to notice a little bit and you?re in that fourth game of the fifth night but I think more so than anything you?re just trying to battle injuries, guys are trying to stay healthy and keep their bodies as fresh as possible but I think we just love to play basketball so the amount of games I don?t think is an issue. I think guys just wish their bodies can hold up for all of them.?

If the goal of the Grizzlies is to be in the top four prior to the playoffs starting:

?It is. Being in the top four is definitely a reachable goal. We?re right outside that spot. If we just take care of business and continue to get better and continue to win these tough games against these good teams we will have a great chance. The West is so competitive and as long as we stay focused and keeping it game by game I think we have a great chance.?

Whether he keeps tabs on what the other teams in the West are doing on a nightly basis:

?It?s hard not to every now and then to not look at the standings to see what guys are doing and what teams are moving up and stuff like that. I think we?ve done a great job of trying to block that out and just worry about taking care of what we control and that?s what we do on the court. As long as we do that I think we will be fine.?

How the adversity the team has faced this year compared to last year:

?I think almost more so. Like you said we?ve had injuries and multiple guys, we?ve had eight games where we?ve had to play big teams without our star players and we?ve done a great job with it this year. We?ve just had to find a way to win games and we?re not a three point shooting team per se but we hit threes some games and then the next game we will just try to lock you down defensively or whatever it may be we will find a way to win. That?s been our motto since day one.?

Conley Becoming Master of the Steal
By Don Wade

The NBA?s steals leader this season, Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, has his opinion.

The coach of the team leading the NBA with 9.7 steals per game, Lionel Hollins of the Memphis Grizzlies, has his opinion.

They are not one in the same.

?People that get steals are gamblers,? Hollins said. ?They?re gamblers. There are some really good defensive players that don?t get steals.

?When I first came in the league that?s all I did, was try to get to steals,? Hollins continued. ?And I learned I was putting my team in jeopardy more times than not so I learned not to gamble so much.?

Paul, who from April 13, 2007, through Dec. 23, 2008, had at least one steal in 108 straight games while playing for the Hornets, opens a video he made for high school players by saying that he gets in arguments with people all the time about the art ? and science ? of making steals.

?A lot of people think the only way to get steals is to gamble,? Paul said. ?I don?t believe that.?

So who?s right?

Both, more or less.

Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley?s 2.35 steals per game ranks second only to Paul?s 2.48. And when Conley was told that the Dallas Mavericks? Shawn Marion had defined him as a gambler, also saying of Conley, ?He reaches in a lot,? Conley smiled but took exception.

?I think it?s more an educated gamble than anything,? Conley said. ?I study everybody?s tendencies.?
