What Duane Washington Jr. brings to Ohio State
What does Ohio State’s second commit of the week bring to Columbus?
There had been rumblings, albeit quiet rumblings, but rumblings nonetheless in small groups of Ohio State fans over the past few months. When head coach Chris Holtmann was hired as Thad Matta’s successor, the overwhelming consensus was that it would take some time for the former Butler head coach to build some momentum. Despite that thought process, there were still contingents of Buckeyes that have been growing more and more irritated with the lack of action in recruiting under Holtmann thus far.
If those doubts weren’t erased yesterday when the Buckeyes landed 4-star forward Jaedon LeDee (here’s what he brings to the table) over Texas A&M and UCLA, a second commitment, just minutes ago from California point guard Duane Washington Jr. should silence that doubt.
Washington picked up an offer from Ohio State back on August 20th, and exactly one month later, he’s officially the second member of the 2018 class. Washington, the 252nd best player in the 2018 class according to 247sports, was on campus last weekend, for a visit that obviously went very well. Here’s what the Chatsworth product brings to Columbus.
ON THE COURT
When it comes to Washington’s play on the court, it’s hard to pin down exactly where he’ll play in terms of position at the next level. He’s serviceable off the dribble-drive thanks to solid handles and quickness, though he’s not the kind of athlete that a guard like Dennis Smith Jr. is.
He’s a capable passer, and can run an offense, though I don’t think he’s at his most comfortable facilitating. That’s where the intrigue lies. What he lacks in true point guard skills, he makes up for with a silky smooth, elite jump shot.
He’s a great shooter from deep and mid-range, both off the dribble or the pass, and can do some serious damage if given any kind of space. The best way to quantify a position for Washington is by calling him a combo guard with point guard capabilities if needed, and a dangerous jumper; also known as exactly what Ohio State needs.
