GENEVA - Those folks who attended the Gilmour Academy-at-Geneva boys basketball game earlier this month probably looked out on the court and wondered who the big guy was officiating the JV game. If they thought he looked familiar, they were right.
Former Ohio State University and St. Joseph High School standout Treg Lee is working on his probationary officiating license, which limits him to games no higher than the junior varsity level for at least this season. Friday's opening game was the first of several in Ashtabula County that Lee, a key component of Ohio State's Big Ten champions and NCAA Elite Eight competitors for Randy Ayers during the Jimmy Jackson era, will work this season.

Too bad,,,

Lee is hoping one of his proteges, St. Edward's Delvon Roe, will end up taking the last scholarship for 2008.

Re: Lee is hoping one of his proteges, St. Edward's Delvon Roe, will end up taking the last scholarship for 2008.
"I think Delvon was originally thinking about going away, but he's starting to see all the Ohio kids they're bringing in, and I think he's taking a harder look at Ohio State," Lee said. "I hope Delvon decides to stay home. There are a lot of great programs here in Ohio, and not just at Ohio State."

Well so much for Delvon going to Ohio State.

You're probably thinking of Kevin Edwards. I thought he was about 5-6 years ahead of Treg, not sure if they actually played together but didn't think so.

Was he Kevin Edwards?

Re: desmond howard 5 11 ?????????

You didn't mention Howard going to any college. I guess he never amounted to anything as an athlete.

ya thxs, kevin edwards. He was on the team. I think he was a freshman/sophmore on that team. I remember randy ayers making another mistake in recruiting. Also, I remember watching them play St. IGGY and a huge fight started on the court when the upset was going on and it was like watching a TYSON fight. My father held me like a baby:biggrin:

Two guys OSU didn't recruit Eric Riley and Beuford made me so mad at Randy Ayers when, I was at all the OSU games I would bother him so much during games. Jimmy Ratliff/chris jent were good friends of mine and would call me after games to tell me to shut the heck up during games . lol

Treg Lee Podcast:biggrin:espite Crushing Loss, 1991 Buckeyes Still Fan Favorites In Columbus

Lost Lettermen: This is Jim Weber from LostLettermen.com and I?m joined by Ohio State?s Treg Lee. Treg thanks for joining us.

What was that ?91 season like? You had a No. 1 seed going into the NCAA Tournament and it really seems like that was the most beloved group of Buckeyes I?ve ever seen. Even though the ?99 team went to the Final Four and the Greg Oden team and Mike Conley team also went to the national championship game.

But what was the aura like around that ?91 team? It seems like Buckeye fans can list all the former players you just mentioned there.

Treg Lee: Well it?s funny that you mention that because everywhere I go I get that comment as far as people really loved the way we played. And I think one of the criteria has to do with, one, all of us played for four years. And a lot of the guys nowadays are one and done. There?s such a high influx of players that are just basically using college or the system to try and go and make the money.

I think the NBA and a lot of those things are watered down as to the style of play. I think people enjoy watching college basketball more than they do the professional level now only because we all came in together. We all helped one another become recruited there. I was recruited through Rick Barnes, who is now at Texas. He was an assistant coach at the time. Myself and Perry Carter. And then Fran Fraschilla recruited Jamaal Brown and Chris Jent, who?s now a commentator for ABC Sports (Editor?s note: Jent is an assistant for the Cavaliers).

Whatever Happened To ... Former St. Joseph basketball standout Treg Lee?
Bob Fortuna, The Plain Dealer, March 20, 2013

Former St. Joseph basketball standout Treg Lee.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Treg Lee, a 1987 St. Joseph graduate, is probably best remembered for his game-winning shot in a 97-95 overtime victory over Indiana when the Buckeyes were 1991 Big Ten champs.

He was a key member of St. Joseph's Class AAA final four team his senior year, which lost a 94-80 semifinal to eventual state champion Dayton Dunbar, led by Mark Baker. Lee became an all-state performer, player of the year, earned consensus prep All-America honors and was selected to play in the McDonald's All-American game.

"We played (the state tournament) in Dayton because of a scheduling conflict going on at Ohio State so I got (denied a chance to play) at St. John Arena,'' said Lee, 45.

Lee, a 6-8, 240-pound post player, got plenty of chances later to play in St. John Arena after earning a basketball scholarship from the Buckeyes.

He went on to play professionally in the Continental Basketball Association, as well as in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Venezuela and Puerto Rico. He is a divorced father of three sons and a Canal Winchester resident the past five years.

He runs General Lee Sports, a basketball skills and fundamental business that combines training youths as players and officials.

"The main reason I work with kids is because I can teach them a lot because of my ups and downs,'' said Lee, the oldest of five children (four boys and a girl) and raised by a single mom.

Probably the best game I ever saw at St. John Arena. Lee took a pass from Jackson and buried that little jumpshot:)
