-Othello Hunter provided the highlight of the day, getting a huge block from the weakside, bringing the ball up the floor, and throwing down a give and go alley oop from way above the rim. Hunter looked good today overall, playing within himself and not forcing anything.

The Hawks orchestrated a 16-6 run in the third quarter that gave them a 12-point lead behind the strong play of Acie Law and Othello Hunter, who finished with 17 and 19 points, respectively.

Acie Law IV and Othello Hunter provided the 1-2 punch tonight. Acie found the range on his jump shot, going for a game-high 19 points on 5-11 shooting from the field and 7-7 shooting from the charity stripe. Law also had three steals on the night. Hunter continued to provide a strong presence inside the paint for the Hawks. He came two rebounds shy of a double-double with 19 points and eight boards. If he continues this type of play the undersized Hawks will be bringing him back for training camp.

Hunter has been consistently beastly ever since the NIT Championship game. I don't really know how it works for players like Hunter and Butler if they aren't drafted right out of college, so is there a possibility that he could be playing in the NBA this season?

Sure there is a chance that Hunter will be played in the NBA next year. He is playing in the summer league for an NBA team and is showcasing his talent for the rest of the teams in the NBA.
The Cavs #1 draft choice, J.J. Hickson, played in the summer league as did many other drafted players.

Butler signed with a European team and will replaying over there this year. If Hunter does not make a NBA roster, he might play in the NBA Developmental League or sign with a European team.

Hunter signing with Hawks

I just got off the telephone with Othello Hunter?s agent, David Lee, who told me he expected Hunter to sign a contract with the Atlanta Hawks today that will put Hunter in the Hawks? preseason training camp and guarantee him half the NBA rookie minimum salary even if he is waived. If Hunter is on the roster Dec.15, Lee said, he gets the full rookie minimum of $442,114.

The agent for Othello Hunter says two NBA teams offered to draft the former Ohio State forward in the second round in June provided that Hunter played in Europe this season.
"It's nice to hear your name called on draft night. It's immediate gratification," said the agent, David Lee. "But you wake up six weeks later and you're in Europe. Sometimes it's good to keep your options open."
Because he did, Hunter woke up this morning a member of the Atlanta Hawks. He signed a contract yesterday assuring him of going to training camp with the NBA team Sept. 30.
Hunter is guaranteed half of the NBA's minimum salary for rookies, or $221,057, even if he is waived, Lee said. Hunter is guaranteed the full minimum of $442,114 if he is on the Hawks' roster Dec. 15.
"I know I can play in the NBA," Hunter said from his home in Winston-Salem, N.C. "(The two teams) probably didn't think I could. I can understand that. But I have so much faith in myself that once I put my mind to it, I can do it."

So you think you?re the only one anxious for the start of the Hawks? season?

When you add Randolph Morris, Othello Hunter and a thicker Marvin Williams to that mix, it does appear that the Hawks will have a few more bodies to work with compared to what they had in the playoffs.
?I feel like Solo has improved a great deal over this summer,? Horford said. ?Josh has gotten a lot stronger and the addition of Randolph and Othello allows us to throw more bodies out there and gives us some serious depth.?
The surprise of the group could be Hunter, a player whose name plenty of people are familiar with from his time at Ohio State but a player whose game his new teammates are just starting to fully understand.
?We played his team in high school when I was at Oak Hill and we blew ?em out by 30, but we did that to a lot of people,? Smith said and then laughed. ?So I didn?t realize it before but I?ve actually gone against him before. He was a good player then but as you might expect, he?s so much better now. He has that good touch around the basket, he?s got good hands, and he has a face up game, too. And he plays a lot bigger than he is, which is basically the standard for all of us.?
Horford faced off against Hunter in college, when he was starring for Florida and Hunter was backing up Greg Oden at Ohio State.
?It?s different for guys in Othello?s case, like my case, when you come from winning programs. It?s all about the team concept so you can?t always show what you can do individually,? Horford said. ?I know that was the case for me at Florida. I could always do more than I showed, but you play a role and sacrifice shooting face up jumpers for the good of the team and for the ultimate goal, which is winning. And I wouldn?t have it any other way. But when you get to this level you get to open up your game a bit more and I think we?ll see the same thing from Othello. He?s got pretty good hands and I suspect he?ll really open some eyes in [training] camp.?
The added bodies means increased competition and a mood heading into training camp that no one will be allowed to rest on what they?ve done in the past.

Othello Hunter got his first taste of NBA action Friday night when he came off the bench vs Greg Oden's Blazers in Kansas City. He logged 17 minutes and went 3/8 for 8 points to go with 6 rebounds.

The game vs Portland was his first run in the preseason; there were rumblings that he tweaked something in camp preventing him from playing, but I couldn't find anything concrete. In my opinion this is still a critical juncture for Othello, while he has a camp contract he can't show anything but improvement as the Hawks roster still stands at 17.

I think he'll make it. The Hawks inivited him to their camp, in effect recruited and groomed him for a bench role. Best case scenario he makes it and gets 5 to 8 minutes a game in his rookie year. Worst case they send him down to the NBDL to get more comfortable. In any event Othello has came a long way. :osu:
