“Boy, I hope he can avoid elbows,” Holtmann said. “That would be tremendous if he could see some of those coming.
Slowly, Young has grown into a more potent offensive weapon while retaining all of the toughness, rebounding ability, hustle and relentlessness that makes him stand out on the court.
But, because of his injury history, much of the conversation around him has centered on his health. So, will there be any load management for him as a fifth-year senior in 2021-22?
“We did it last year with him in practice. We had a whole plan in place for him because of his legs. His legs actually are feeling the best they've felt really in a couple years,” Holtmann said. “You know, he's never played more than 25 minutes. So I do think we could, to make sure he is ready at the end of the year, I do think we could utilize the idea of just watching his minutes throughout the year. Whether that's load management or looking at his practice habits, he's going to do everything you ask him to. So we've really tried to manage that. We'll continue to do that.” https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio...alaki-branham-jamari-wheeler-kyle-young-kalen
Background
A native of Canton, Ohio, Young left Massillon Jackson as a state champion and a four-star prospect in the class of 2017. He wasn’t planning to play for Ohio State, though: thanks to a strong bond built with Butler coach Chris Holtmann and his coaching staff, Young signed with the Bulldogs as the highest-rated recruit in program history. Ranked as the No. 80 national prospect and the No. 2 player from Ohio in the 247Sports.com composite database, Young picked Butler ahead of Ohio State because of Holtmann. While at Jackson, Young was a three-time all-state selection who scored 1,582 points.
As a senior, Young averaged 18.0 points and 6.5 boards while shooting 59 percent from the field as Jackson went 28-2 and won the Division I title.
Then Ohio State fired coach Thad Matta in June of 2017 and hired Holtmann within a week. From there, it took less than 10 days for Young to ask for his release from Butler and follow his coach to his home-state school. Young committed to Ohio State on June 19, moved in three days later and began practicing June 23. He knew one player on the roster: fellow first-year player Kaleb Wesson. Once he started to settle in that summer, Holtmann told a handful of reporters inside a conference room at Value City Arena that while he wasn’t exactly sure how much Young would contribute statistically during his career, he was going to grow into a player that Ohio State fans would love before his time was up.
KYLE YOUNG OUT INDEFINITELY WITH VESTIBULAR DYSFUNCTION: "WE DON'T SEE THIS AS A LONG-TERM INJURY"
Ohio State will be without one of its senior captains when it takes on Indianapolis in Monday’s season-opening exhibition.
Fifth-year forward Kyle Young has been diagnosed with a vestibular dysfunction, which is defined by the National Center for Biotechnology Information as “a disturbance in the body's balance system due to peripheral or central causes,” Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said Friday.
“We don’t see this as a long-term injury,” Holtmann said. “We also don’t have a specific timeline right now for him to return. He has been out for a little bit here with that condition.”
Young received the diagnosis a week-and-a-half ago, Holtmann said, but the issue had been bothering him for some time before that.
But the good news is that Young is healing, making progress and looking forward to getting back onto the court soon for the Buckeyes.
“I’m feeling good,” Young said Tuesday at Value City Arena while participating in the annual “Blood Battle” between Ohio State and Michigan. “I’m pretty much back to working out. Just trying to get back into practice. I’m doing rehab and stuff like that. Just trying to get comfortable enough to get back in the game and compete at the level I want to compete at.”

The problem I see with Kyle's "injury" is that all it is going to take is getting hit in the head during practice or in a game situation and he will be out for who knows how long. He is going to have to be very careful and having watched him play that is not his style
Kyle's my dude. So much respect for the kid. He deserves to have a full season but he deserves more to have a full life. Count me in the worried department too
Never the flashiest guy, doesn't have a shelf full of awards, doesn't get a lot of press, but he's played hard and has been quietly effective his whole career. He will end up one of my favorite Buckeye basketball players ever.
