“He's got to take a jump for us offensively,” Holtmann said last week. “I'm not saying he's got to double his output, but it's got to be a significant number increase for us to be good. And then he's also got to provide some of his defensive physicality. Albeit he's undersized, but he's definitely going to have to provide that for this group. The defensive side, right now, is my biggest overall concern with our group. We have to continue to get better in that area.”

“Kyle Young has shot the ball exceptionally well,” Holtmann said in early October. “Everything we've evaluated this summer, everything we've charted, and we chart every shooting drill, and he has been top-four on our team in 3-point shooting.”

“He's really been able to catch and shoot for us and space,” Holtmann said on Wednesday. “He doesn't have quite the touch that Kaleb does. I'm not saying that. But I do anticipate that he's going to shoot more 3s than what he has ever done, probably by a significant margin. He's proven time and again that he's capable of doing that.”

Kyle Young played an important role in Ohio State’s 89-85 win at Iowa last week that saw the Buckeyes vault into the top five of the AP Poll for the first time this season. But a 16-point, six-rebound performance against the Hawkeyes cost the Scarlet and Gray forward.

After battling with Iowa center Luka Garza for 32 minutes last Thursday, Young needed two full days to recover. Garza is not only the favorite to win the Naismith Award this year, making him a difficult matchup for any player, but also has three inches and 40 pounds on the Ohio State forward, meaning helping to hold Garza to just 16 points -- tied for his lowest scoring output of the year -- took a toll.

But missing practice is nothing new for Young. Due to frequent soreness in his legs, the senior takes time off to be ready to play in games. Head coach Chris Holtmann has accepted that Young is going to miss time but knows his motor will have him giving the kind of effort needed when he does take the court.

“I think he’s a great example and we miss him when he can’t practice, honestly,” Holtmann admitted. “It affects our practice in a lot of ways. We don’t feel it as much because he’s an older kid who does bring energy.”

Just sayin': I didn't know he had a leg issuer, i.e. "sore legs". Was wondering if he is thinking about coming back next year. Since he has already graduated and with the leg issues, probably not.
