PF Jared Sullinger (2x 1st Team ALL B1G & All American, Anyang KGC, S.Korea)

DraftExpress.com fleshed out the numbers from the NBA draft combine last week and they were not kind to Jared Sullinger, providing further fuel for critics predicting he does not have the athleticism to succeed in the NBA.

Sullinger ranked last among combine participants in the lane-agility and sprint drills, which prompted ESPN.com draft insider Chad Ford to write that he "may be the worst athlete in the draft." Yet Ford still predicts Sullinger to go 10th in the first round, to New Orleans.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com noted that "few people put much stock in" the combine results and that, "for the NBA's purposes, a player's lane agility time ultimately means very little."

Sullinger is working out with Portland today and has workouts also scheduled with Golden State, New Orleans, Toronto, Cleveland and Detroit before the draft. All have picks, some more than one, among the top 11 in the draft.

Warriors work out six more players
By Jimmy Durkin

Jared Sullinger is aware that the biggest knock on his basketball game is a lack of athletic ability. His response?

"I (couldn't) care less."

Sullinger, the 6-foot-9, 280-pound forward out of Ohio State, was one of six players to work out with the Warriors on Thursday morning at their downtown Oakland practice facility. The Warriors own four picks in the June 28 NBA Draft, including the No. 7 selection.

Sullinger, a consensus first-team All-American, is considered to be in the mix at that No. 7 spot if the Warriors choose to keep the pick rather than negotiate a trade. He spoke at length after his workout about the criticism of his athletic ability.

"I was hearing it when I was in college, I was hearing it in high school, I was hearing it in middle school," Sullinger said. "I'm just one of those type of guys that's never going to be athletic. Athleticsm does not bother me. I don't need it to be good."

Sullinger, who averaged 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game during his two seasons at Ohio State, pointed to the Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Love and Memphis Grizzlies' Zach Randolph as players who have succeeded in the NBA with less than average athletic ability.

"If you want to draft somebody that's stupid athletic and is able to touch the top of the backboard, but has no skills or is just raw with talent, by any means, take that," Sullinger said. "I just accept the fact that I'm a below-the-rim player and I find other

ways to score."

Two pieces of the Warriors' core for next season are power forward David Lee and center Andrew Bogut. Both are post players noted for their passing ability, which is considered one of Sullinger's strengths.

"I'd love to pick their minds and learn how to play in the post in the NBA," Sullinger said of Lee and Bogut.

Don't forget Jared Sullinger can play

If you're an NBA team and "you want to draft somebody that's stupid athletic and is able to touch the top of the backboard, but has no skills or is just raw with talent, by any means, take that," Jared Sullinger said.

Sullinger, a top-10 draft prospect from Ohio State, is not that guy.

The power forward, one of six players to work out for the Warriors on Thursday, is 6-foot-9 and 280 pounds, and hears more about how many shots he gets blocked than about being a consensus first-team All-American.

Kansas' Jeff Withey blocked three of his shots in just more than a minute in Ohio State's Final Four loss, a game in which Sullinger finished 5-for-19 and the Buckeyes lost by two. Sullinger also had his shot blocked a few times Thursday by North Carolina's 6-11 forward John Henson.

"If you block my shot, good for you. I am happy for you," Sullinger said. "But I am going to find ways to score."

Sullinger calls himself a below-the-rim player who knows the game.

"I don't need athleticism to be good," he said. "I have learned to accept that; I wish everybody else would."

Sullinger: 2 down, 4 to go

Jared Sullinger walked into his parents' Columbus home this afternoon while I was talking on the phone to his father, Satch. Jared just got back in town from workouts with Portland and Golden State this week in advance of the NBA draft on June 28.

He has workouts scheduled with four more teams: New Orleans on Monday, Toronto on Thursday, Cleveland on Friday and Detroit the following Monday, June 25. Then it's off to Newark, N.J., and the draft.

The six teams Sullinger has worked out for, or will, have eight of the first 11 picks in the draft; New Orleans and Portland have two apiece. The hottest rumor this week was New Orleans using the No.10 pick on Sullinger and pairing the two-time All-American at Ohio State down low with projected No.1 choice Anthony Davis of Kentucky.

Sources: Jared Sullinger red flagged
Updated: June 18, 2012
By Chad Ford | ESPN.com

Ohio State Buckeyes big man Jared Sullinger has been medically red flagged by NBA doctors, multiple league sources told ESPN.com on Monday.

Sullinger, who is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2012 NBA draft, underwent a series of medical tests at the NBA draft combine a week ago. According to sources, the doctors who looked at Sullinger were concerned with Sullinger's back.

A number of NBA team doctors have reviewed the information from the NBA and have told their front office staff that Sullinger's back issues could shorten his NBA career and some have advised their teams not to draft him in the first round.

Sullinger's agent, David Falk, when reached via phone by ESPN.com said that he was not in a position to comment on the story.

Sullinger's father, Satch Sullinger, said he believes the issue isn't that serious.

"He had a bulging area that was due to his hamstring and quads being so tight," Satch Sullinger told ESPN.com senior college basketball writer Andy Katz in a phone call Monday afternoon. "It pulled on his hip flexor and he's been taking care of it to loosen it. You can call it a red flag if you want. But it's tight hamstring and tight quads. He's been to doctors, he's doing yoga and deep tissue massage. The flexibility is helping take the pressure off the area.

"We've got nothing to hide. At this stage it's all about what they can't do. Jared is a skilled player. A two-time All-American. He can play."

Just filed to ESPN: Sources: Jared Sullinger medically red-flagged by some NBA doctors for back issues

If I'm Sully, I'm considering having a lawyer sue ESPN and whomever leaked his personal medical information just prior to the NBA Draft.

It could cost him millions of dollars. I'm not a lawyer, but unless he signed a waiver saying that the results of any medical examination could be made available to the public, I think he might have a pretty good case.

The flip side of that COULD be that he would have to admit he had the injury and if he said otherwise to teams could be grounds for a suit. I'm no lawyer so maybe not.

Either way I'm all for sueing eSPiN.

We need Gator back to discuss this issue, as well as (of course) the Kent State ass kicking of UF in the CWS. Also, I know it will never happen, but I would love for someone to contend ESPN is an entertainment network and has no entitlement to or protection from freedom of the press. Assholes

Cavaliers notes: Sullinger to work out for team

@BobCavsinsider

Ohio State power forward Jared Sullinger will work out for the Cavaliers on Friday at Cleveland Clinic Courts.

Sullinger, a 6-foot-9, 268-pounder, has been medically red-flagged by NBA doctors who have expressed concern over the player's back, according to a story on ESPN.com. His agent refuted the story, saying Sullinger has tight hamstrings.

The first-team All-American could drop in the June 28 NBA draft. He's no longer a lock to be drafted in the lottery.

"He probably won't be drafted earlier than No. 12," said Joe Kotoch of NBAdraftinsider.com. "Houston has two picks. The Rockets might take a shot at this guy (at Nos. 14 and 16). Otherwise, I could see Minnesota (No. 18) or Boston (Nos. 21 and 22)."

It's not totally out of the question for Sullinger to be on the board when the Cavs pick at No. 24. However, that's an unlikely scenario.

"It's certainly going to be interesting with him," Kotoch said.

Another factor for Sullinger is talk that one of his legs is longer than the other, by about an inch.

"The greater disparity of leg length, the more likelihood he'd suffer from back issues," Kotoch said.

The stock of Ohio State PF Jared Sullinger is sinking rapidly. With reports that Sullinger has one leg longer than the other and concerns about his back Sullinger's stock has fallen from potential top-10 pick to someone that may be on the board in the mid-20's. Sullinger's red flag is eerily reminiscent of DaJuan Blair, the Pittsburgh PF, who has no ACL in either knee. While Blair lasted into round 2, Sullinger is likely to be snared by a team in round 1 as he is bigger and more polished. Word around the league is that Denver, Boston, Cleveland, and Indiana are all teams in the 20's that would be willing to grab Sullinger. Another intriguing team to watch with respect to a falling Sullinger would be the Oklahoma City Thunder, who lack a low post scoring threat.

Where does Jared Sullinger fall to
Chad Ford
(3:17 PM)

No idea yet. Lots of concern from team doctors based on the physical. But every team's medical staff looks at these things differently. And different GMs have different risk tolerances. Sullinger's camp is adamant that this isn't a serious issue. But I've spoken with around a dozen GMs who believe it MIGHT be based on what their docs are telling them. My guess is he slides out of the Top 10 ... but how far? Depends on how comfortable team doctors get with what Sullinger's personal physician and agent is saying. I've seen this go both ways. Sometimes red flags don't have much of an impact at all. Sometimes they have a devastating impact. More often, with top players however, it's the latter. DeJuan Blair is the most recent example. But this happened to Danny Granger too a few years ago. He slipped from a top 5 pick into the late teens.
