A tweep (for the uninitiated, that's someone who follows me on Twitter) tweeted me during that game that ESPN had reported that Sullinger has told the Ohio State coaching staff he will be back for a second season.

My newspaper deadlines prevented me from attending the postgame news conference (my recorder did, though), so I texted Matta later, asking him if Sullinger had said that.

His reply, via text: "They all do!!!!!!!!! Lol" (That's "laugh out loud," for those who don't text.)

Funny. That's exactly what I thought when I saw the tweet.

Sullinger wasn't biting on the line in the water after the game. A reporter told him that 24 NBA scouts attended, and, beating around the bush, asked him how he manages to live in the moment.

"I love these guys. This team is something special," Sullinger said.

And yada, yada, yada.

Big Sully was more forthcoming about his perimeter shooting stroke, which netted one three-point basket and almost a second, when his foot was on the arc.

"It?s something I?ve been working on in practice," he said. "I know I can shoot. It wasn?t falling at the beginning of the season, but it was open looks so you have to shoot it. Coach Matta said he?s fine with me shooting it."

Matta: "We practice those, and I watch him shoot a very high percentage in practice. Early on in the season, I was telling him, 'You weren?t shooting that shot like you shoot your jump hook. When you shoot your jump hook, you know it?s going in.' I thought he had pretty good confidence in that shot tonight."

I just want to make a quick point and hope this is the right thread. I think that NBA players are horribly oppressed. I think that they should go on strike--a full-blown lockout--for at least two years.

OK. Maybe three national championships, er, uh, years. Uh, if we're not willing to stand up for the players, who will? It's the right thing to do.

That is all. Mods feel free to move this if you don't think this is the right thread.

Carmody's plan for Sullinger

Carmody's other ploy was to rarely double-team Jared Sullinger in the post and make sure he had all of Ohio State's three-point shooters covered.
Sullinger scored 21 points but Ohio State attempted only eight three-pointers and made two.

"With the shooters they have out there, it really poses problems. We just said let?s not let them get six threes tonight," Carmody said.

"Of course, Diebler hit a big-time three. We were supposed to switch on him but we got mixed up. But I thought we did a nice job doing what we went into the game trying to do."

Diebler's three, his only points of the game, regained the lead for Ohio State, at 57-55 with 3:36 to play, after the Buckeyes had gone more than 4 1/2 minutes without a field goal.

Carmody said there was little method to when Northwestern double-teamed Sullinger.

"At certain times we sort of left it up to our guys," he said, depending which side of the lane Sullinger was on.

'Sully' assumes veteran responsibilities

With the score tied, 17 seconds to play, and a No. 1 ranking and unblemished record at stake, most teams in college basketball would turn to their savvy veteran to deliver the win.

Not Ohio State.

When the Buckeyes' perfect season was in jeopardy against Northwestern on Saturday night it was freshman forward Jared Sullinger who was called on to lead his team to victory.

"As soon as we got the steal, I looked up and there was 15 seconds on the shot clock," senior forward David Lighty said. "Coach (Thad Matta) kind of looked at me and I said, ?Keep going, keep going,' and they had the play set up for us, and we just ran it right then and there and it worked to perfection."

"Perfection," in this case, meant finding Sullinger in the post, where he was able to draw a foul and drain one of his two free throws to secure the nerve-racking 58-57 win.

Despite Sullinger's relative inexperience at the collegiate level, his teammates said they have total confidence in his ability to deliver.

"That's a play we like to go to, throw it to him in the post and let him make the best decision," freshman point guard Aaron Craft said. "He has our confidence to make the right decision. If he is open then he will do what he did tonight, and if not, he'll make the pass out."
