With The New York Times and USA Today in town in recent weeks to do profiles of Sullinger, the freshman is tasting life in the national eye and apparently handling it well.

He gave a shout-out last week to someone with whom he can empathize. After quarterback Terrelle Pryor apologized on national television to fans following the Buckeyes' win in the Sugar Bowl, Sullinger tweeted him.
"It takes a real man to go on national TV and tell the whole Buckeye Nation he is sorry," Sullinger wrote Pryor.

"I can tell you 10 coaches that wish it was the none-and-done rule." - Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, asked about Sullinger while discussing Ohio State's ability to sustain success despite players continually leaving early for the NBA draft

Sullinger, Freshmen Adjusting to Physical Big Ten
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? It took only three games, but Jared Sullinger finally knows what Big Ten play tastes like.

It?s red, it?s wet and it has a hint of copper, and Ohio State?s star freshman got a mouthful of it Sunday during the Buckeyes? 67-64 win over Minnesota.

?It was about as physical as I?ve ever seen inside there,? OSU Head Coach Thad Matta said.

?Jared (had) blood on his uniform, (he was) banged up and that?s how the game went. He did a great job playing through it.?

The 6-foot-9 forward out of Columbus Northland finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds in 36 minutes despite the fact Minnesota coach Tubby Smith opted to double-team him every time he touched the ball in the paint.

?The double-team was coming on the first dribble,? said Sullinger, who was 5-of-11 from the floor.

?As I made my first dribble, the double-team was there so I couldn?t make a move. I had to kick it out right away. I knew on the opposite wing there was going to be a wide-open Ohio State basketball jersey, so I just swing it to the other side. Over time, the double-teams slowly came slower.?

i think today was a landmark in jared sullinger's development. what we saw was a true freshman twice call for the ball while our team was nearing despair. not only did he accept the responsibility to deliver, sullinger also delivered. jared is now the team leader.
Matta says

Jared Sullinger's two three-point plays at the end of the game:
"On the last one, I told him, ?Look, don?t try to draw the contact. Just make the shot.? And as only Jared can do, he did both."

Sullinger who
played 36 minutes, was on the bench for nearly four minutes midway through the second half while the Buckeyes scored only four points and had a six-point lead reduced to four.

"He said I?m going to give you a quick (rest) and you?re going to be right back in," Sullinger said. "But sometimes coach gets so caught up in the game, and so caught up on our defensive end, that he kind of zones out about the bench.
"That?s where the assistant coaches really help him out, because it?s kind of hard to focus in on everything."

And did Sullinger help the assistants help remind Matta to get him back in the game?

"I ain't going to lie. I did," he said.

Told that Sullinger thought he forgot about him, Matta smiled.
"I never forget about Jared," he said.

"I was trying to rest him. And I think it probably paid off down the stretch for us."

Unguardable at the college level. He's now adapted to taller, more athletic big men on him.
I'm looking forward to seeing him go up against MSU and Purdue. Roe, and the kid who played on the AAU team with Jared, can't remember his name :smash: are long and very athletic, but don't seem to play strong enough, Johnson of Purdue is the same. It's going to be a good matchup for Jared, and we may need Dallas to step up as well.

Still a great time to be a Buckeye :highfive:

I have never seen them play against each other in AAU because of them being on the same team but I am sure that some of the other guys on the board has seen them practice against each other. Payne is not really seeing that much time on the floor at MSU and I don't think that he is strong enough to take him one-on-one JMO

I agree completely about Payne, he seems very raw, and he doesn't seem to be seeing the floor much. He is, along with Roe, very long and athletic, and with both in the game, it will be interesting to see how Sully handles the help from the weak side. I watched Baylor a bit tonight, and Lacy and Jones are those type of tall, long athletes who could give Sully a bit of trouble, but Sully surely has learned how to use his body and get into a shot blocker, he is fun to watch.

Jared Sullinger is the latest in a string of highly touted big men to play at Ohio State. The Buckeyes and coach Thad Matta hope he stays beyond his freshman year.

Jared Sullinger, left, is following in the footsteps of his brother J.J., right, who also played for Ohio State. J.J. helped the Buckeyes win a Big Ten title in 2005-06.

COLUMBUS -- Jared Sullinger snaps a photo with his camera phone of the near life-size image of his older brother, J.J., that is plastered on a wall in Ohio State's Schottenstein Center.

Jared likes to remind his brother of treasured moments as an Ohio State basketball player.

"I'm going to rub it in on Twitter to make him mad," Jared cracks, "because he misses these days. He misses college."

Jared, 18, seems to get the same joy from college that J.J. did in his senior season in 2005-06 as a captain who helped the Buckeyes win a Big Ten championship.

Little brother has distinguished himself as a freshman, leading Ohio State (18-0, 5-0 in the Big Ten) with averages of 17.6 points and 9.9 rebounds going into Wednesday's home game against Iowa.
Jared showed his teammates a glimpse of his dedication by shedding 16 pounds in the summer.

"I was atrociously overweight," he said.

Matta told Jared if he didn't lose weight, he probably couldn't play more than two-minute stretches.

"In high school he could walk down the floor, catch his breath, go sit down on the block, catch and score," Matta said. "Here he's hedging ball screens and has guys trying to outrun him down the floor. I knew we needed him on the floor for extended time."

Jared, playing an average of 29.6 minutes, hasn't disappointed.

"It's pretty much all in my lower body," he said of the excess weight he carries. "I have the butt and hips of my mom."

His father said it's realistic for his son to hold off on the NBA.

"My wife does not want him to grow up too fast," Satch said. "She says he has plenty of time to be an adult."

Father and son refrain from looking ahead to the NBA.

"He got to Ohio State by playing for Northland," Satch said. "If the NBA is in his future, he'll get there by playing for the Ohio State University."

I love what mom and dad say and that JJ loved his time there but I'm hesitant to believe right now. Most mocks have him going between 2-4. That's hard to turn down. Just hope Jared keeps having fun out there and being the dominant player he is.

The word that I see applied to both JJ and Jared is "joy." And I see that in their faces - those smiles are as honest and genuine as I've ever seen. What a great thing to see! These young men both appear to truly enjoy life, whether on the basketball court or not. That's a tribute to both Mom and Dad, IMO.
