PF Jared Sullinger (2x 1st Team ALL B1G & All American, Anyang KGC, S.Korea)

From the scout.com recap: Jared had to miss the pregame shoot-around in order to attend the funeral of his uncle, Howard Sullinger.

?I got to see my uncle for the last time,? Sullinger said of the viewing for Harold Sullinger. ?It was really tough. This game really does go to him.?

Sullinger credited his uncle?whom he said yelled at him during a recent game when he only had three rebounds?for inspiring him.

Jared Sullinger missed the Buckeyes' pregame shootaround to pay his final respects to his uncle, Harold Sullinger Jr., who died Dec. 3 of a massive heart attack.

Then Jared went out and scored 40 points, an Ohio State freshman record, and had 26 of them in the second half to rally the Buckeyes to victory over IUPUI.

The Sullinger family had a viewing this afternoon for Harold, who will be transported to New Jersey for his funeral Saturday. He was born in Columbus before becoming a high school basketball star in Camden, N.J., and playing two seasons at the University of Iowa.

Harold was the younger brother of Jared's dad, Satch Sullinger, the coach at Northland High School. A couple of years ago, while interviewing Jared at the high school, Satch, whose given name is James, told me the story of how he came to be known as "Satch."

"My dad played pro ball before blacks were allowed in the NBA," he said. "He was called 'Suitcase Sully' because he had big hands. They said when he walked down the street, it looked like he had suitcases on the end of each arm.

"I was the oldest boy, so after 'Suitcase' came 'Satchel.' And my brother Harold was called 'Briefcase.'

"I?ve got this great big poster that I framed, air-tight, and it shows my dad holding the ball. He was owned by Speedy Williams, the guy that owned the Harlem Globetrotters, and he played for the Sioux City (Iowa) Colored Ghosts."

The poster of Harold Sullinger Sr., Satch said, includes the team's name and adds this: "featuring the great 'Suitcase Sullinger.'"

Here are all of the 40-point games in tOSU history:

9 by Robin Freeman
8 by Gary Bradds
2 by Dennis Hopson
1 by Jerry Lucas
1 by Clark Kellogg
1 by Paul Ebert
1 by Jared Sullinger

I'm surprised there are two prominent names missing from that list... Jimmy Jackson and Michael Redd. I would have figured each one performed that feat at least once. And I'm surprised Lucas only scored 40 once.

Sully's in good company with those names. Enjoy him in scarlet and gray while you can fellow Buckeye fans. :)

Putting aside Jared's considerable talents, what is most impressive is how grounded and unselfish he is, as well as how unselfish the older guys on the team have been in getting Jared integrated into the offense. You got the sense watching these guys over the last 12 minutes last night that there were four guys trying to one-up each other as to who could make the prettiest assist. It's really fun to watch.

kid is a true true true stud...my only knock and it is very very very very minor and maybe it gets magnified because it seems to happen more in crucial moments when we need a bucket, is that he still gets blocked alot in the paint...a kid with his size and skill set, it shouldnt happen that often, and obviously he is a freshmen and is adjusting to the college game and players and he will get better at it....more pump fakes, going up stronger, different footwork and moves in the paint can help...like i said its a minor knock and has nothing to do with my love for the kid and his game and how dedicated he is to Ohio State in case you decide to bash me....the kid is already unstoppable and its scary to think that he is only getting better and better each game

I was a little surprised Evan Turner wasn't on there either, but thinking back, I couldn't think of a time he scored quite THAT many points in a game.

I think the most impressive player who holds the record for 40 points a game is Robin Freeman. The majority of his shots came from the outside and there was no 3 point shot during the days when he played. He also only played three seasons when comparing him to some of the other names on the list.

A double dip for Sullinger

Jared Sullinger had a record-setting week in wins vs. IUPUI and Western Carolina last week to earn his second Big Ten Conference Player of the Week and fourth Freshman of the Week awards. The 6-9 freshman from Columbus averaged 28.5 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 64 percent from the field (16-25) and making 25-35 foul shots (.714). Against IUPUI, Sullinger poured in 40 points, an Ohio State freshman record and the first 40-point game for a Buckeye since 1986. He connected 12-of-17 shots and set Ohio State freshman records for both made (16) and attempted (23) free throws. Battling illness against Western Carolina, Sullinger scored 17 points in just 22 minutes. He hit 9-of-12 free throws and 4-of-8 field goals in Ohio State's eighth win of the season.

Sullinger's second player of the week honor marks the first time a league freshman has earned two in a season since Ohio State's Greg Oden did so during the 2006-07 season.

Noting Sullinger's 40-point game.

Freshman Jared Sullinger scored a game-high 40 points for the Buckeyes in the 75-64 win vs. IUPUI Dec. 9. Along the way he set numerous Ohio State records.

Most Points by an Ohio State freshman-40

Most FTs Made by an Ohio State freshman-16

3rd-T Free Throws Made at Ohio State

Most FTA by an Ohio State freshman-23

10th-T FTs attempted in Big Ten history

Third Most FTs attempted in Big Ten history

2nd 40-pt. by a Big Ten freshman all-time

No. 17-T Single Game Scoring Record at Ohio State

57th time OSU player has scored 35 or more points in a game-all-time
Last time OSU player scored 35 or more pts. in a game was by Brent Darby (35) vs. Duke in 2002.

Last time OSU player scored 40 or more pts. in a game was by Dennis Hopson (41) at Dayton in 1986.

Last time a Big Ten player scored 40 or more pts. in a game was by Shawn Respert of Michigan State vs. Indiana, 1/11/95.

Sullinger scored in double figures for the seventh time this season in win vs. Western Carolina. He led the Buckeyes in scoring with a career-high 40 points and 13 rebounds vs. IUPUI. He has four double-doubles in eight career outings. The last Buckeye to score 30 points in a game was Evan Turner vs. Tennessee on 3/26/10 in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.
Sullinger's 40 points is a Value City Arena record for most points scored. It is the 10th 30-plus point game in Value City Arena history. Evan Turner had the previous record with 32 vs. Iowa for a Buckeye on 2/7/10 (Ray Barbosa, UMBC, 12/29/07 and Marcus Taylor, Michigan St., 2/27/02 also had 32 points as visitors).

Sullinger's 40 point performance is the first 40-point game since Dennis Hopson scored 41 at Dayton on 12/26/86. It's the most points ever for a freshman at Ohio State. Michael Redd previously held the freshman record for points in a game with 32 vs. Penn State on 2/28/98 in an overtime loss (89-85) at St. John Arena.

Sullinger's 40 points are the most points for a freshman in a game since Greg Oden dropped 29 vs. Iowa on 1/20/07.

Sullinger had a career high in free-throw attempts, making 16 of 23. Evan Turner was the last Buckeye to make at least 10 free-throws in a game. Turner was 10-12 vs. Illinois on 3/13/10 in the Big Ten Tournament last year.

With 16 made free-throws, Sullinger's performance places him tied for third all-time at Ohio State in free-throws made in a game.

Sullinger's 16 made free-throws and 23 attempted free-throws are both freshman records. It ties for the most free-throws made and is a free-throw attempt record by an Ohio State player in Value City Arena (Brent Darby was 16-18 vs. Illinois on 1/29/02).

The 23 free-throw attempts by Jared Sullinger were five more than any Ohio State opponent attempt total this season (18 vs. NC A&T).

Ohio State is back in action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Value City Arena vs. Florida Gulf Coast. For ticket information go to www.OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
