PF Jared Sullinger (2x 1st Team ALL B1G & All American, Anyang KGC, S.Korea)

Is Jared Sullinger Ohio State's newest star? - College Basketball Nation Blog - ESPN
Is Jared Sullinger Ohio State's newest star?

CHICAGO -- Evan Turner did everything.

That's what star players do for their teams, but Turner was something different. A 6-foot-7 point guard so athletically dominant and preternaturally skilled, Turner made Ohio State coach Thad Matta's offense often resemble that of a sixth-grade coach with a particularly well-developed 12-year-old. "Everybody get out of the way. Evan, get the ball, dribble up the floor, and score. OK, break!"

It worked. The Buckeyes fell short of the Final Four, but they had their best season since the Greg Oden- and Mike Conley-powered 2007 runner-up finish. Now, Turner is gone. The question for an experienced Ohio State team facing its first season without the national player of the year -- Turner was drafted No. 2 overall in the 2010 NBA draft -- is how you replace him. If you can.

Maybe you can't. But you can do what Matta did: Recruit a bunch of really big, really good players, mix them in with your talented veterans, and see what happens.

This is where Jared Sullinger comes in.

Conley, Turner and the rest of the story

After visiting with Mike Conley Jr. and Evan Turner at Conley's youth basketball camp Wednesday at Worthington Kilbourne High School, I fed Bob Hunter a Rumbling for today's paper on their opinion of Jared Sullinger's play in pickup games in the Schottenstein Center this summer.

Unfortunately, there evidently was not enough space for all of what they had to say. So here's the rest:

"Sully's going to be a double-double from day one," Turner said.

When I told him he might be putting too much pressure on the freshman with those expectations, Turner said, "I'm not lyin'. He's that good."

Conley was even more bullish. He predicted a triple-double, though with a smile.

Conley also said he thinks Sullinger and Dallas Lauderdale can play together because Sullinger is nimble enough to guard some smaller power forwards.

"And," he added, "they'll have to guard him at the other end."

Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger is Buckeyes' latest impressive big man
Published: Thursday, October 14, 2010
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

Terry Gilliam / Associated Press
Thad Matta talks to freshman big man Jared Sullinger at media day on Thursday. The Buckeyes are counting on Sullinger to keep them among the elite teams in college basketball.

Columbus --Thad Matta still can't avoid hyperbole when he talks about recruiting Greg Oden, describing Oden hitting his head on the roof of high school gyms when he blocked shots and looking down through the rim after he threw down dunks. The 7-footer's brief Ohio State career included a trip to the NCAA title game in 2007, and now four years later, the Buckeyes' coach again has one of the best freshmen big guys in the country.

"That's not who Jared is," Matta said. "But he's productive in a lot of other ways of getting numbers."

Jared Sullinger is 3 inches shorter than Oden, and while Oden was the consensus No. 1 recruit in the class of 2006, Sullinger was ranked No. 4 by Scout.com and No. 5 by Rivals.com. But for an Ohio State team that lost national player of the year Evan Turner to the NBA and is still ranked in the top five of some preseason projections, Sullinger has a lot of Oden in him.

He's big, and with the Buckeyes starting practice today, everyone thinks he'll be good right away.

Sullinger leads a six-man freshman class that is expected to help veterans David Lighty, Jon Diebler, William Buford and Dallas Lauderdale keep Ohio State among the best teams in the country.

"Physically, he's already like a college senior," OSU assistant coach Jeff Boals said Thursday. "Jared has always had a great feel for the game. He's one of those guys that sees stuff happening before it happens."

... ON JARED SULLINGER: "Jared has been very good to this point. I think the biggest thing was he's really resurrected his body. He's gotten himself in very good shape. For his size, his hands and his feet are very good. He's got a great touch. He knows how to play. . . . I think our guys have seen a great unselfishness out of him. Jared is a guy that you enjoy playing with. And I think he's one of those guys that can make guys better around him."

Sullinger dominates 'secret' game?
Ohio State Buckeyes

Recently, ESPN's Chad Ford released his list of top draft prospects who play in non-power six conferences. Since Jared Sullinger plays in the Big Ten (for Ohio State), his name isn't included on this list ... though we are sure many draft analysts consider the first-year big man the next center (and Ohio State big) to jump after his year to the next level.

The hype surrounding Sullinger hasn't slacked when former Buckeye Even Turner gave him a shoutout a few months ago. And it won't die down, especially after the news from Evan Daniels of Scout that Sullinger scored 40 points in OSU's 'secret' scrimmage against Baylor. Especially since, considering the lineups, Sullinger was probably guarded by equally as impressive frosh Perry Jones.

Bob Baptist of the Columbus Dispatch confirmed the rumor but did temper the 'wow' factor by reporting he scored 40 points in 65 minutes. Still, it is an impressive amount for a freshman in his first competition against someone not wearing an Ohio State jersey. One area of OSU's game that should improve rather quickly with Sullinger on the court is their offensive rebounding percentage; according to Ken Pomeroy's stat database, OSU grabbed only 30.1 percent of their misses, a below-average percentage ... but when your team is ranked fourth in effective FG percentage, chances are there aren't that many 'boards to clean up.

Sullinger Flashed Brilliance in Scrimmage
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS ? Ohio State fans will have to wait until Sunday to get their first glimpse of Jared Sullinger in a Buckeye uniform, but his new teammates are already salivating after what they saw this past Saturday.
Playing in a ?silent? scrimmage in Columbus against Baylor?a top-16 team in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll?Sullinger put on an offensive show against fellow freshman Perry Jones.
Although OSU Head Coach Thad Matta would not confirm rumors that Sullinger went off for nearly 40 points, it?s clear the McDonald?s All-American put up some big numbers during the scrimmage.
?Jared played extremely well. Once he established himself down there they really couldn't stop him,? senior Jon Diebler said Thursday as the Buckeyes prepare to face Walsh in an exhibition game Sunday.
?Jared is a special player because he is so intelligent as a freshman and he really knows the game of basketball.?

Ranked #1 Center in the NCAA by Rivals/Yahoo

Sullinger?s 6-foot-9, 280-pound physique indicates he shouldn?t have too much problem adjusting to the punishing style of Big Ten basketball. His status as the reigning Naismith Award winner as the national high school player of the year shows he also has the talent to adapt to big-time college basketball.

1. Jared Sullinger (6-9/280, Fr.), Ohio State: The No. 5 overall prospect in the 2010 recruiting class, Sullinger was the Parade national player of the year and the Naismith Award winner as the national prep player of the year. He averaged 24.5 points and 11.7 rebounds as a senior at Columbus (Ohio) Northland.
2. JaJuan Johnson (6-10/221, Sr.), Purdue : This fourth-year starter ranked eighth in the Big Ten in scoring (15.5), fifth in rebounds (7.1) and second in blocks (2.1) last season. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore and was a second-team pick last season.
3. Perry Jones (6-11/235, Fr.), Baylor: The No. 9 player in the 2010 recruiting class, Jones is the highest-rated prospect ever to sign with Baylor. The Bears are counting on Jones to showcase his extraordinary athleticism as they attempt to replace NBA lottery pick Ekpe Udoh in the frontcourt.

Regarding the rumor that freshman Jared Sullinger went for 40-some points in the scrimmage against Baylor on Saturday, coach Thad Matta initially denied it but then, as a colleague put it, could not keep himself from "grinning like a Cheshire cat."

I was told later that Ohio State scored 36 points in the third 20-minute half against the Bears and that Sullinger had 25 of them. That aligns with what David Lighty had to say about the scrimmage and Sullinger, that "they tried to stop him in the post pretty much in the first half, but we have a lot of shooters and a lot of drivers and that kind of opened up things for us. Then they tried to spread it out and the post came open for him."

A lot of Sullinger's damage, I also was told, was done against 6-foot-11, 220-pound Perry Jones, a fellow freshman projected as the No. 2 pick in next year's NBA draft. Sullinger is 6-9 and 270.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

osu-mbk-11-7-art0-gu0ag7hc-1ncl-hsboys-124-28-jpg.jpg

Neal C. Lauron | Dispatch
Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger, right, led Northland High School to 95 wins and a state championship in four seasons. In the Amateur Athletic Union, his team won 201 games and three national titles.

His legend precedes him.

Before he has played a minute in his Ohio State uniform, freshman Jared Sullinger received votes for inclusion on the Associated Press' five-man, preseason All-American team.

In a magazine article, former NBA guard Greg Anthony, now a college basketball analyst for CBS, said Ohio State coach Thad Matta told him that Sullinger is the best talent he has recruited.

Matta, whose past catches include Greg Oden, was lost for words when that was relayed.

"I don't know if I said 'talent,'" he finally said. "Maybe 'most productive.'"

And then there are the 40-some points that Sullinger is rumored to have laid on Baylor in a 65-minute closed scrimmage last weekend in Value City Arena. Asked about that, Matta denied it, tried to change the subject and then finally smiled like someone who is privy to something the rest of us aren't.

What is Matta trying to hide?
