Ohio State men’s basketball | Jaedon LeDee is a guard in a power forward’s body

When Ohio State’s summer term for freshmen gets underway June 19, four freshmen on the men’s basketball team will arrive on campus to begin their collegiate careers. The four, who all committed during a six-day period in mid-September of last year, represent the first full recruiting class in coach Chris Holtmann’s time with the Buckeyes.

Before Justin Ahrens, Jaedon LeDee, Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington Jr. all arrive on campus, The Dispatch caught up with each of them to review their senior seasons, their reasons behind picking Ohio State and their hopes to contribute as freshmen.

As a senior: 27 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks per game. Shot 64 percent from two and 40 percent from three. ledee might just be for osu a 3 a bit more than a 4. the 2019 offers are making a little more sense.

His ball-handling abilities were put to use in AAU basketball.

“I’d play point-forward, let me get the rebound off the rim and push it, set up certain plays,” he said. “I’ve never really played a true PG since my freshman year. Bringing my versatility to Ohio State, being able to get it off the rim and go make plays in transition, I feel like I can definitely do that.”

Ledee’s dad said his son’s ability to hit jumpers helps set him apart.

“The best part of his game is his mid-range pull-up,” he said. “He’s perfected that to where even coming out of junior high he probably had the best mid-range in the country. Then he realized nobody could stop him physically so he’d finish at the rim. That’s why I’d always play him up. In eighth grade and 12th grade he was just too physically gifted for kids his age. In college, he’ll have to go back to using a lot more of his overall skills.”

As if often the case in recruiting, give mom plenty of credit. An official visit to Ohio State impressed the LeDee family, but most importantly it impressed his mother, Sherri.

“When I took my visit, first of all I really liked the place, but my mom is very good at feeling people out and she could tell the coaches were really good people,” he said. “She really liked it, and I liked it as well. Coach, he plays through his threes and fours in his offense, which that’s good for me. I just want to play in that system. He’s a great coach. And it’s The Ohio State University. It’s the big time.”

there is enough here to tell me that i may need to reevaluate ledee's range of abilities and what his role(s) at osu may be. he might just be for osu much more a 3 than the 4 (or 3-4) many have been expecting. the recent 2019 offers are making more sense.

on the other hand, i think kinkaid's competition was pretty weak, so i'm a bit skeptical of his averages, specifically his efficiency behind the arc. i don't think he proved to be as reliable during aau season. regardless, our staff may still be projecting him as more of a 3 who can fill as a 4 than a 4 who can fill as a 3. that distinction may be slight, though.

Basketball has changed. Players are more interchangeable now. The best way I can describe it is you now have guards, wings and forwards. The traditional 1-5 designation just doesn't apply in most cases now.

well, of course. meanwhile, here is what we may be looking at for 2019:

ledee
gaffney
young
(liddell, nnaji, ramsey, gillis, etc.)
potter
kaleb

the recent offers going out to guys like ramsey and nnaji specifically tell me that ledee may play more of the small forward role than the power forward role. and i'm not just talking about offense. yes, offensive roles tend to be more fluid. defense, though? you are pretty much what you defend. neither kaleb nor potter nor young nor, say, ramsey nor even gaffney is going to be the guy you want guarding a quick small forward. likening gaffney to what we saw from kbd last season only makes sense if gaffney also plays with a quick 6'4" "power forward" who can guard a player like charles matthews. who among the aforementioned list is a jae'sean tate? the only one possible is ledee. that was my point.

We saw LeDee work as that lone big man in a four-guard lineup, but also as a power forward on the floor with Kaleb Wesson. I'd expect LeDee to get time at both the power forward and center spots this year. He's got the athleticism to defend on the wing if asked, but also the strength to play inside and size at 6-foot-9 to protect the rim. He flashed some of his athleticism on Tuesday with a put-back dunk and a block at the rim in quick succession.

DON'T SLEEP ON JAEDON LEDEE. It's easy to forget with the football Buckeyes undefeated in October, but basketball season is just around the corner, and Chris Holtmann is ready to do his magic once again.

There's a lot of roster turnaround between this year and last year, meaning a lot of new faces will lead the way for the Buckeyes this season. Jaedon LeDee is one you should definitely know.

The four-star small forward made the NCAA's list of six freshmen we aren't talking about enough heading into the season.

Consider this: Before Chris Holtmann got to Ohio State, Keita Bates-Diop had averaged 11.8 points and 6.4 rebounds in most recent full season. In Holtmann’s first year with the Buckeyes, Bates-Diop averaged 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds, winning Big Ten Player of the Year honors.

Now, it’s unfair to compare LeDee to Bates-Diop. Then again, nobody saw Bates-Diop’s breakout season coming, and LeDee has a similar profile. He’s a 6-9, 230-pound combo forward with long arms and a smooth jump shot. Sound familiar?

He’ll have opportunities to score for Ohio State, which loses most of its key pieces from last season. Will he put up the same numbers Bates-Diop did last year? No. Could he in his final season in Columbus? Absolutely.

LeDee will probably be a complementary, but vital piece on a surprisingly good Ohio State team with future star potential. That qualifies him for this list.

I'm high on LeDee, but my pick for sleeper of the year is Duane Washington. He'll be the best three-point shooter on the roster this season. Book it.

The article is not terribly informed. LeDee has a very average wingspan of 6'9.5 for his 6'8-6'9 height. It's certainly nothing compared to KBD's freakish 7'3 wingspan.

I don't think any of our frosh are going to have a big instant impact but I think Muhammad and/or Washington will have to play a lot out of necessity, so hopefully they play well.

I agree with the Elven writer. LeDee can provide some important contributions but Washington is the frosh to really watch out for as far as scoring. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Duane average near or more than 10 ppg. People really dont understand just yet that Holtmann has an eye for talent, he will have guys that exceed expectations as freshmen. I am not sure LeDee will be one that exceeds, but being a tall, physical presence on a team seemingly short on that trait at the 4 will be good.
