PF Evan Ravenel (Fukushima - Japan)

Kid looks amazingly like Amare Stoudemire. If he plays half that good, we're in serious business!

Either way, I like it. Matta always finds guys to plug the holes right when you think we're in trouble for depth. His demeanor and attitude are already a huge plus in my book with him. Good get.

See the post right below your original post and you might understand. I think you might remember a player by the name of Kyle Madsen who after a few years of practice he played some very valuable minutes his last year and, in addition to basketball, he is an extremely good student.

I am a big Madsen fan, so don't take this wrong - but if your return on investment for three years of scholarship is what we got from Madsen you aren't going to win many championships. UNLESS you are recruiting players specifically to play a subordinate roll (and maybe surprise you once in a while).

Matta does seem to pursue exactly that kind of player with transfers and JUCOs to complement his rising stars and lend stability/maturity to the program.

And isn't that really the question? With six incoming Frosh do you hold a ship for another highly rated but inexperienced player, or do you balance your team with a kid who can bring some maturity to practice immediately and who will still be playing as a fifth year senior? And a kid who wont be rocking the boat about PT and threatening to transfer elsewhere himself.

With two common opponents in UNC and FSU, here is a comparison of Evan and tOSU's big men. (also played scUM but Evan played 1 minute) This isn't the best meter to show if impact Evan could have, but it's a good view of the same opponent. Point being, give the guy a chance, as I think we might possibly have a decent role player if given the minutes.

(MINS PTS RB BLK)
Evan Ravenel (UNC 17 8 4 2 ) (FSU 18 8 6 1 )

Dallas Lauderdale (UNC 21 4 6 3) (FSU 24 2 2 1)

Kyle Madsen (UNC 17 2 1 0) (FSU 16 4 3 0)

Forward Evan Ravenel, who told The Dispatch on Saturday he is transferring to Ohio State, has size (6 feet 8, 250), athleticism, good hands and feet, understands the game and can both post up and step out and make a 15-foot jump shot, Matta said.

"I'm excited to get him in here for a year, for him to learn what we do, how we do it, and spend a ton of time with him on skill development."

Ravenel said he needs to improve his conditioning and upper body strength, which will happen immediately when summer conditioning begins after the start of summer school June 21.

Matta on a few matters (Hoops & Scoops: an OSU basketball blog)

I guess I must be a bigger fan of Madsen:) While I basically agree with most of your post, I think the return on investment for a 3 year scholarship is worth it especially if you are getting the type of player mentioned in your last 2 paragraphs especially when we don't know who will be in our next recruiting class and if Jared decides to bolt after one year Evan might be seeing more playing time than anyone expects in his first year of eligibility. The guys that we currently are in on for the upcoming recruiting class are not exactly the type of players that are going to be able to give us 30 minutes a game even with Z.

Personally, I like this type of player. From everything that I have read, he did not leave BC because of problems and he seems to be a fairly good student who wants to play with a coach that he is very familiar with. I think we both know that you cannot have all 5 and 4 star players on your roster because we have seen what happens when kids (who think they should be playing) don't get that type of minutes they want.

Depending on who we get in the next recruiting class, I can see this kid fitting in very nicely in Dallas' role along with Z depending upon how he progresses. Also, right below your original post you can see that starBUCKs likes him for whatever that is worth:biggrin2:

Evan deserves a bump just for the way he played last night. He will be a nice contributor off the bench this season.

good call. Very impressed with what I saw. Nice looking jumper and very active on defense.

Ravenel looked very mature on the floor; always in control, and made good decisions at both ends. If that's indicative of his overall game, it will be a huge bonus in games where a starter gets in early foul trouble. I have a feeling the more he plays, the harder it will be to keep him on the bench.
