first impressions.. this is a better player than Lauderdale (and I liked Lauderdale).. maybe not the shot blocker.. but more skilled overall .. and we're going to be real happy Thad found him... fully expect there to be a game or 2, that he's the story of the game... tough kid... could be our enforcer.. keeps the other centers from Sullinger hackathons without retribution.. send in Evan

Evan Ravenel said he has no problem with coming off the bench.

Evan Ravenel might have thought his day was done on Sunday, but Ohio State coach Thad Matta called his name one more time.

In a tug-of-war down the stretch at Michigan State, with a share of the Big Ten championship on the line for the Buckeyes, the Spartans gave the ball to their star, Draymond Green, on three straight possessions, and he scored each time on Deshaun Thomas.

With the scored tied and Michigan State having possession with 43.4 seconds left, Matta replaced Thomas with the 6-foot-8, 260-pound Ravenel and said: Please don?t let him score again.

?I didn?t say it quite that nicely,? Matta acknowledged yesterday. ?In essence, I asked him, ?Do you have a feel for what they?re doing?? And he said, ?Yeah, I?ve got it.? I think it was something where he wanted the challenge.?

Ravenel did what Thomas could not and kept Green from getting to the basket, forcing him to take a challenged jumper from the wing that missed with 30 seconds left. Jared Sullinger rebounded, Ohio State called time out, and the Buckeyes won on William Buford?s 20-foot shot with one second left.

The defensive stop capped a day in which Ravenel made the most of his eight minutes on the floor and demonstrated to his younger teammates on the bench just how much filling a role can mean to a team?s success.

He also had seven points, two rebounds and two assists in an earlier, five-minute span of the second half while Sullinger was on the bench with four fouls.

?Evan did what Evan needed to do ? and he did it successfully,? Matta said. ?Hopefully guys are looking and saying, ?Boy, that is a good role model for what I need to do.? ?

He was really effective agsinst MSU..but why I like EVAN is he knows and understands his role and when in the game he is team first..other subs sometimes lose sight of the team first and try to do more in order to impress coaches,

“At the end of the (last) game, me and some of the coaches sat down and talked about my performance and how I have to play with energy,” Ravenel said. “If I play with energy, I play like I did today. It isn’t always going to be perfect, but if I play hard and I play with energy, good things happen.”

His nine rebounds were a career high and his 11 points one off his career high.

Matta said the talk with Ravenel was “just (about) getting guys to be who they are and being consistent with what their role is on the team, and taking great pride in that. For whatever reason tonight, Rav had that sense about him. I hope we can continue to expand on that.”
