Background
A rare recruit, Liddell signed with Ohio State after becoming only the second player to ever be named Illinois Mr. Basketball in multiple years. The No. 1 prospect from Illinois, the No. 8 power forward in the nation and the overall No. 44 recruit in the 2019 class according to the 247Sports.com composite database, the Belleville West product joined Duke’s Jabari Parker as the only other player to twice capture the state’s top individual award.

Liddell signed with Ohio State after announcing a list of five final schools that also included Illinois, Kansas State, Missouri and Wisconsin. He was selected to both the Ball is Life All-American Game and the Iverson Classic after his senior season. Liddell is West’s all-time leader in points (2,508), rebounds (1,004) and blocks (500) and is third in assists (322). In the first 105 years of West’s existence, he outscored the runner-up in school history by more than 500 points.

Asked about Liddell’s total against the Tigers, Holtmann cut the question off.

“He’s got to turn it over less,” the coach said. “He’s got to take better care of the ball. Bottom line is, he’s got to take better care of the ball. The ball’s in his hands a lot. He’s got to be more sure with it, strong with it. It gets knocked loose from his hands too much. He’s got to get better in that area.”

Liddell leads the team in scoring (19.8 points per game) and rebounding (7.0) and his offensive usage rate of 34.6% is 11th nationally according to KenPom. His turnover rate of 20.2 is nearly double what it was a season ago, when Liddell was named first-team all-Big Ten with a turnover rate of 11.9.
