PF Devin Royal (Official Thread)

  • On Scotty Middleton and Devin Royal: "Scotty, right now, of our freshman (has the biggest) ability to come in and impact both ends. ... I think Devin's shown real improvement here in the last couple of weeks in terms of his conditioning and his fitness."

A bright spot for Ohio State, Devin Royal is making progress but must continue to grow

The Buckeye freshman has flashed at points and wants to do more to help his team win.

Fans looking for a positive to Ohio State’s torrid run of recent results don’t have to look back too far. In Friday night’s 79-77 loss at Iowa, the Buckeyes’ fourth straight defeat, freshman forward Devin Royal was a bright spot, taking advantage of the absence of classmate Scotty Middleton to come off the bench and score nine points and grab three rebounds.

This may seem like modest statistics for the former state champion and Mr. Ohio Basketball. However, the performance was a further sign of growth from a young player still finding his footing in the college game during what can only be described as another difficult season for the Scarlet and Gray.

“I mean, it's going good,” Royal said of his first year at Ohio State when speaking to the local media on Thursday. “I expected us to win a little bit more, but it's going good. We just learn things. It's a young team, so we just learn new things. Just keep trying, getting a feel for things, just keep our defense better. So I mean, in my opinion, we're a great team, we've got a lot of skill. So we've just got to keep working.”

A big fault of both mens basketball and football. When game is out of reach, either way, put in the youngsters to get them 'blooded'. Going against the 1's in practice is all well and good, but the crowd noise and ambience of a real game simply cannot be duplicated. That's what Smith told Holtmann last year during the freefall, and tOSU has some very skilled sophomores (maybe the best guard tandem in nation). If the freshmen get better than a couple of garbage minutes here on out, it will build for next year. Whomever takes over the Buckeyes will have a solid team to play with. (If everyone/most stay).

This dude not playing a hell of a lot more probably cost Holtman his job. I can't figure it because he's smooth as hell out there and a freaking dog in the crunch. Makes no sense
He clearly is able to use his size, length and strength well, & does a good job of carving out space to get good shots in a way most guys on this team just can't. He brings an element of toughness and grit that bodes well for his future in the B1G.

As an Ohio POY, he's already received a great start. Signing with the Buckeyes simply adds to it. We gotta remember that everyone of these signees average a million points a game (maybe a tad overstated), as the stars of their teams. At the college level, one has to play defense, or the game becomes a watered down NBA game. NOT playing D is what keeps some of these guys on the pine. Shooting the rock well is what gets them on the court, defending your opponent is what keeps you on the court. From what I've seen of the Buckeyes over the last couple of years, is that SOME play D, but not everyone. Maybe his D isn't up to snuff, which is why he's not getting more minutes? Go Bucks!

Some coaches chew out their players if they finish a game with 2 or less fouls.....'you're not playing hard enough D' if you've got that many unused fouls...so there's that. That was back 'in the day' - my days, however. B10 is NOT a finesse league. Leave that to ACC and Pac12, B10 is for bangers only. Go Bucks!
