Adding Size

The final member of the class, at least for now, is power forward Trey McDonald. An all-city and all-conference performer as a junior, McDonald brings a high motor and much needed size to a team that could be short the latter next season.

?Trey McDonald out of Battle Creek, he?s got a tremendous body. He?s a guy at 6-foot-9 who can step out and shoot the basketball,? Matta said.

?He handles it well, I think he can be a 4-man for us who can go inside-out. From the standpoint of defense, he?s a guy who can guard a couple different positions.?

Battle Creek Central's big man is heading to the Big Ten.

Trey McDonald, BCC's 6-foot-9 senior center, signed a letter of intent Tuesday to go to Ohio State University to play basketball during what is the early signing period for prospective college athletes.

"I really like the coaching staff, Coach (Thad) Matta is great. It just felt like home to me," McDonald said. "Getting a chance to play in the Big Ten is big. The Big Ten is a strong conference and is going to be a strong conference for years to come."

McDonald had given his verbal commitment to Ohio State a few weeks ago in an effort to end the recruiting process. During the final weeks of his recruitment McDonald had narrowed his list to five schools - Wake Forest, DePaul, Marquette and Oakland University, as well as Ohio State.

"Getting recruited was fun. You get to meet a lot of new people and that's great," McDonald said. "But now I'm glad it's over. I can concentrate on my school work and get ready for the season."

Welcome to the Buckeye family, young man. While Trey is raw, he has a nice list of traits that you can't teach. Obviously he has good size, but two things that stuck out at me in his film are his feet and his hands. It looks like he moves well, and I did not see any bobbles on his rebounds or catches. When you combine his size, footwork and hands, he has the chance to be very good at the next level, all he needs is a coaching staff to coach him up, and at tOSU, he will definitely have that covered.

He adds much needed depth immediately, and has a chance to be a Perry Carter (with good hands) or possibly even a T Dials type player in a few years.

Many college basketball fans grab some chips, turn on the TV, watch the big game and wonder what it might be like to be a part of a No. 1-ranked team.

That's what Battle Creek Central standout Trey McDonald was doing last weekend, but the difference is, he won't have to wonder for long.

Like many of us, McDonald was watching at home as No. 1-ranked Ohio State played at Wisconsin last weekend. And with every basket, every pass and even in the loss at the end, McDonald felt like he was a part of it. Not as a fan, however, but as part of the team.

McDonald, a 6-foot-9 senior at BCC, has signed to play at Ohio State next year and through his recruiting visits he knows everybody on the Buckeye team, the coaches and probably most of the training staff. He is as much a part of that team as you can be without living in Columbus.

And now he is just looking forward to taking that next step.

"Yeah, I was watching. They were playing really good and then Wisconsin started hitting those threes. At that point, you knew they were coming back," McDonald said of his future Buckeyes, who are still ranked No. 2, with only one loss, and running away with the Big Ten title. "It's been a lot of fun to see them play this year, knowing everybody and knowing you are going to be playing with those guys next year in the same situation."

McDonald is getting ready to play his final handful of games at BCC as February reaches into March. As one of the top centers in the state, the Bearcat star is finishing up an excellent career that has allowed him to ponder what it might be like to play on the national stage at the next level.

"Ohio State is doing really well, what a great situation for Trey to be going in. They are in a position to win a national championship this year," BCC coach Greg Williams said. "They have a guy like (Jared) Sullinger, who Trey will get to play with and play against to help him get better as he gets acclimated to the college game - what a great situation.

"Trey is going to excel at the next level. He is going to get a great education at a great institution and it's all because he put the work in to get better and put himself in that situation."

Some might argue McDonald had the choice of being a big fish in a small pond at a lower-profile school, but the BCC star likes the idea of being a part of a possible great team at Ohio State. Getting to play at that level excites McDonald.

"I thought about it a little bit, playing at a smaller school. But I just felt at home at Ohio State. I felt like I could make my mark there as well as anywhere else," McDonald said. "I have played with all those guys (in the recruiting class) in the summer time, met all of them. I know I can play with those guys, I know the talent is there."

Seeing him every day in practice, Williams knows he can make his mark at Ohio State also.

"You have to compete for minutes at a place like Ohio State, but Trey understands that," Williams said. "Sullinger came in this year and took some minutes from somebody else that was there before. You come in looking to earn your minutes and that's what the coaches talked to Trey about.

"He could have gone to a lot of teams and could have worried about playing more here or there. And at Ohio State, he might red-shirt right away, or he might play - you never know how that will work out. But Trey has the desire to play at that level. He's not looking to sit on anybody's bench. He's looking to play and excel at Ohio State and I think he will."

Bearcat hooper in All-Star game

The Enquirer

Even though his high school regular season is over, Battle Creek Central basketball standout Trey McDonald will still take the court at least one more time as a high school star before heading off to college to play at Ohio State University.

McDonald will play in the inaugural Under Armour All-Michigan All-Star game at 8 p.m. on Friday at Ferndale High School.

There is a girls all-star game scheduled for 6 p.m.

The 6-foot-9 Bearcat will be just one of a star-studded all-star group taking the court, which is a fun event for players and fans.

"It's a reward for an outstanding season and an outstanding recruit," BCC boys' basketball coach Greg Williams said. "All-Star games are a good showcase for players at that level. You can play in up to three after the season before going to college."

Williams said McDonald may also play in the upcoming Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All-Star game if it doesn't conflict with his responsiblities regarding the Buckeyes.

Trey McDonald

McDonald isn't expected to make a big contribution during

his freshman season at OSU, but could be a valuable asset in time.

"He's a program player who, perhaps by his junior or senior year, will be a meaningful on-court contributor," Helwagen said. "For now, his role is to grow and learn."

At 6-foot-9, 230 pounds, the power forward from Battle Creek, Mich., has the ability to score inside, but experts say his game lacks polish.

"I think he has the most work to do coming in from this class," Noon said.

FUTURE BUCKEYE'S STOCK ON THE RISE.....

As a junoor, Trey McDonald was not recruited by any major schools and was just hoping to find a scholarship from any D-1 school to play basketball. Fast forward a year and T-Mac is one of the highest rising recruits in his class in that 1-year span.

Trey committed to Thad Matta and OSU in October to fill the desperate need of a big-man. At the time of his commitment, Matta didn't know if Sullinger or even Deshaun Thomas would be back for their sophomore season, Dallas Lauderdale would be graduating, Amir Williams had yet to commit, and Matta didn't yet know what he had in transfer Evan Ravenel.

Prior to the commitment of McDonald, the possibility was there that Thad Matta's only big-men on his OSU roster would be an un-proven Ravenel and a soft, 6'7" J.D. Weatherspoon who many believe is more of a SF than a post player.

Thad Matta was desperate. He had heard of a late bloomer kid from the Detroit area that played AAU with (at the time) current OSU recruiting target Amir Williams so he went to see him play a game and offered him a scholarship right on the spot.

By this time, the 6'9"/235 McDonald had recently received multiple offers from major schools including Wake Forest, UConn, Marquette, Iowa, and West Virginia among others.

Trey's stock has been on the rise ever since the day he committed to Ohio St. As this thread was made just months ago, back in October, McDonald was rated as the 23rd best center in the 2011 class. Eight months later, T-Mac has risen all the way up to #14 ranked center in his class and his new head coach had some lofty comparisons of McDonald. In a recent interveiw, Matta compared McDonald's game and hustle to former OSU player Othella Hunter and former Xavier star David West. Trey's former high-school coach has compared his style of play to Tim Duncan; a bit if a stretch to me but he was referring to his high basketball IQ and fundamentals.

Although Sullinger and Thomas did return for their sophomore season, Amir Williams also committed to OSU, and it seems that Evan Ravenel will be a solid player, it appears that Thad Matta's desperate move for a big-man may pay off with big dividends. The future looks very bright for this under-the-radar freshman prospect. By the time McDonald leaves OSU, he will leave his fingerprint on this program. How big of an impact, is yet to be seen..... -NINJA-BUCK-1-3

ALSO CONSIDERED
Miami (FL) Hurricanes, Iowa Hawkeyes, DePaul Blue Demons, Arkansas Razorbacks, Dayton Flyers

Strengths:
McDonald is the type of player that the more you watch him the more you like him. He has great size, length and runs the floor on a consistent basis. He scores with his back to the basket mostly with a jump hook that he can shoot with either hand and he also displayed the ability to step out and knock down the 15 footer with time and space. McDonald is an excellent area rebounder as well. Anything that hits his hands he seems to pull in. He also is a good on ball shot blocker.
Weaknesses:
McDonald must continue to add strength and maintain the confidence he gained from attending the Nike Skills Academies where he seemed to get better at a steady rate. He must work on passing the ball under intense pressure out of the post and handle the ball more fluidly in addition to working to be a consistent back to the basket scorer and open mid range shot maker.
Bottom Line:
Great looking prospect that has worked hard and improved rapidly so far this summer. He can score, rebound enough to demand the defenses attention and has great upside definitely one of the class of 2011 post players that is on the rise.

That video of T-Mac really shows how good this kid can be. I think that Buckeye Nation is really going to be surprised at how good Trey McDonald turns out to be. I think in a couple years, with a more developed body and game, Trey will be a solid rotation guy and could end up being coach Matta's most under-the-radar player, besides Craft. That might sound like too high praise for this kid, but keep in mind almost all of Matta's recruits are very high profile and Trey was very under the radar.

His frame should fill out to a solid 6'9.5"/255 by the time he grows into it. He really reminds me of a young Terrence Dials.

Buck_guy - how do you see Trey developing down the road? Are you as high on him as I am? Don't get me wrong, I don't think he'll be all-B1G but I think he could develope into a starter down the road and be atleastvas productive as Dallas Lauderdale. Whatcha think?
