PF/C Micah Potter (transfer to Wisconsin)

I think that it's time to start talking about this kid a bit. I'm not sure that it's showing in that stats much, but my eye test says that now that he's not just hanging around the perimeter, he's starting to do some solid work on the glass, is showing a bit of post game, and has turned the corner in terms of aggressiveness and confidence. I expect him to do a bit more than we expect down the stretch and think he will be a 12-14 point 7-8 rebound kind of player next year with more playing time and experience.

He clearly was coached to be more aggressive in that Iowa game, and I like some of his game, but I'm not ready to project those kinds of averages for next year. He's up and down, and prone to fouls a bit too much to be relied on. I would be quite happy if we got the low-end there of 12 and 7. He's definitely capable of those performances, especially if he knocks down a couple of threes a game. I'm thinking more like 9/10 and 5/6.

Agree with both of you guys. I really like how Potter has become more aggressive as the season has progressed. Really enjoy his energy but I also realize that he needs to harness that energy a little bit because I think that is why he sometimes will get in foul trouble. I just really enjoy his effort… Tate like.

With regard to next year, you two just need to split the difference.

Thought this was interesting.
Saw the player from Buffalo give Potter a hug when he was leaving the court yesterday and Ohio State was waiting to come on the court.
Turns out the Potters have a couple connections to the Buffalo squad that will look to knock off No. 5 Kentucky here on Saturday and continue on to the Sweet 16 in the South Region next week in Atlanta.

First, Micah was teammates at Montverde Academy in Florida with Buffalo sophomore guard Davonta Jordan.

“I was really good friends with him at Montverde,” Potter said.

Secondly, the Potter family is close with the family of Buffalo head coach Nate Oats. Micah’s father Tim is good friends with Oats. Tim Potter is a pastor and his church is closely associated with Maranatha Baptist University, the Christian college in Watertown, Wisc., where Oates played. Oats’ father is a professor of theology there and Dean of Maranatha Baptist Seminary.

Buffalo offered Micah a scholarship out of high school, when Oates was an assistant at UB under now Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley. Obviously Micah picked Ohio State. But in an odd turn of events, close family friends from Ohio and New York get to share the NCAA Tournament stage here in Boise.

MICAH POTTER WORKING TO BECOME A BETTER LEADER, MORE VERSATILE DEFENDER IN 2018-19

93603_h.jpg

Ohio State's 2017-18 season was nothing short of surprising for everyone outside of the facilities at the Schottenstein Center. Now though, the page is officially being flipped.

Chris Holtmann's second Buckeye team is starting to gear up for the 2018-19 season, as the new members of the team, specifically Keyshawn Woods and C.J. Walker, have already arrived on campus and are working in open gyms with the returning players

The 2018 class has yet to arrive in Columbus, but the veterans have already begun trying to prepare for the tall task ahead of replacing the likes of Keita Bates-Diop, Jae'Sean Tate, Kam Williams and Andrew Dakich. Their absence will be felt in more ways than one, and Micah Potter is looking to help fill some of the holes.

Now entering his junior season, Potter knows that he, and the likes of C.J. Jackson will have to step up especially as expectations ramp up for the second year of the Holtmann era.

"I think people might have higher expectations for us, but at the same time, I don't know that the expectations are that high because of how much we lost," Potter said Wednesday. "We lost a lot of talent, but that is my opportunity to step up. I feel like I am ready. I am ready to take my game to the next level and hopefully this season will prove that."

One area in which Potter is trying to improve his game, is his on-ball defending. Potter saw his minutes decrease last season, going from playing 14.1 minutes per game as a freshman to just 10.1 in his sophomore campaign. Part of that was due to a high ankle sprain that forced him to miss a good portion of the non-conference slate, however once he recovered, Potter still found himself near the end of the rotation.

i'm not surprised that potter would transfer, but i'm very surprised by the timing. perhaps micah felt entitled to the starting spot that kyle young appears to be assuming. if so, that's weak sauce.

Completely agree. Can't fault a guy for pursuing what he thinks is best for him, but to leave the program 48 hours before the season starts?

given all the minutes that kbd and tate have left behind, potter's decision is just so odd. and then when you consider that kaleb has been foul-prone, that young barely saw any minutes last year, and that ledee is a freshman, well... it just doesn't make any sense. the limits to playing time were going to be about as low as any player could hope for, especially for a player who averaged only a few points last season.

from my vantage point, this leaves two reasons that make any sense:

1. there is an off-the-court issue.

2. potter feels severely insulted by not being named a starter and also feels that it would be beneath him to continue fighting for a starting spot. in other words, potter believes that he was entitled to a starting spot and such an insult is irreparable.
