PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

What role exactly will he fill on the ofense next year? I saw in an interview he said his job would be to find mismatches. It seems like he'll be almost a completely new type of weapon for our offense (or is there anyone on the team who can do what Kosta will be doing next year?). I guess I'm just having a hard time imagining him in the offense that we currently run, anyone know exactly how he'll fit in or if we'll be altering our offense for when he's in the game?

kosta's role will at least somewhat depend on whether, of course, greg is back and whether hunter can produce his own offense. against man-to-man, it's a 4-out/1-in offense... similar to what is being run this year, though you will see a lot less double-teaming of greg. kosta's presence would allow for even greater odenation. kosta would kill a 2-3. he is a zone-breaker. can you imagine a team trying out a 2-3 on ohio state if oden is on the team? when kk gets the ball at the top of the key, the defense is done. done. what do they do? collapse on kosta? okay, he dumps it down to a 7-foot giant in one-on-one coverage. or he kicks it out to a perimeter threat in butler. or he kicks it out to a mid- to long-range threat in cook. oh, and then there's conley dissecting the defense. there is no defense that can handle that. if they don't collapse, koufos converts in one of numerous ways.

Then think about us running a 2-3 zone on other teams...

There will be no way for teams to convert inside against us with Kosta and Oden inside and then that would allow the perimeter guys like Butler, Conley, and Cook to press the guys and if they get in the to the lane so what as there are 2 7 footers back there protecting the basket...

having oden and koufos together absolutely boggles my mind. it's one thing to have two standard 7-footers on a team. it's something else completely when one of them "plays like he's 6'6." you bring up the point about ohio state's defense next year if oden and koufos play together. there will be no doubt whatsoever that the 2-3 will be played a lot next year with those two. this recognition changes the preparation. though man defense must always be worked on and must always be the foundation to any defense, practicing the 2-3 as if it's going to be the bread-and-butter defense will make it so much stronger.

Koufas may find it hard to play like he is 6' 6" in the big ten. He won't be quick enough. Teams may find it impossible to score in the paint though. As you say "the thought boggles the mind".

Who is this Madsen I've heard mentioned? (I've only been a OSU fan since this past summer when I decided this is where I wanted to go to college. Did he red shirt this year?)
He is a transfer from Vandy. Played Center in HS. Projected to be a four in college. 6'10" 250, moves well and is trying to , or has developed a 3. will be available next year. He is from Columbus originally.

when they say he plays like hes "six six" it has more to do with him being a wing reference. hes a wing. if oden isnt back youll see some open post. youll see kosta in the short corner against the 23 and maybe some at the high post.

draft express
While Koufos was not outstanding, he gave everyone in attendance a preview of the role that he will play next year with all of the pick and pop plays that he executed. He shot the ball consistently from mid-range, while knocking down two three pointers as well. He struggled a bit defending quicker power forwards, but he will likely guard opposing centers next year at Ohio State with defensive stopper Othello Hunter taking care of the team’s opposing power forward.
