GlenOak's run has stitched together Plain community
Thursday, March 22, 2007

PLAIN TWP. In two days they bought and sold more than 3,500 tickets. They printed and sold hundreds of GlenOak High School State Final Four T-shirts. The GlenOak boys basketball team has won 23 of 26 games and scored 1,506 points this season.

And a community has come together.

Can it stay that way?

Divided by school levies and state financing, Stark County's most diverse school district has found a bond in a group of basketball players, some of whom aren't old enough to drive. They've found common interest, loyalty and, most of all, they've found pride.

Koufos isn't sole senior making big contribution

Kosta?s running mates

They often get overshadowed by one of the nation?s best players ? teammate Kosta Koufos.

Their moments in the spotlight can be limited to a big shot here, a key rebound there.

They are not McDonald?s All-Americans. They don?t get invites to play in open gyms with LeBron James. Dreams of an NBA career likely will remain exactly that ? dreams.

Crazy about Koufos

George Fulton hasn't seen 'em all. But it's close. The yesteryear All-Ohio guard hasn't seen any Stark County high school boys basketball player as dominant as GlenOak's Kosta Koufos.

"He can do so much," said Fulton, 79, Stark County's second-leading scorer in 1945 for Canton St. John. He was mentioned on Chuck Taylor's All-America team during a great career at Kent State and has attended most of Ohio's state basketball tournaments over the decades.

GlenOak coach following in the footsteps of his father

PLAIN TWP.

Nearly 90 minutes passed.

Memories returned. Stories flowed. Scattered moments in time came back to life ? long-ago conversations and dozens of life?s lessons learned on and off a basketball court.

On the eve of his biggest week as a high school boys basketball coach, Jack Greynolds Jr. could not help but talk about his biggest influence ? his late father.

Sounds like it won't exactly be the most impressive game of Kosta's high school career. Tough way to go out..he was 5-11 shooting and just 3-7 on free throws, finishing with 13 points in a 45-34 loss to St. Xavier. He also had 4 rebounds, but Glen Oak got pounded on the boards, with X having a 30-16 rebounding advantage.

I can understand the offensive struggles cause X had guys draped all over him, but I was suprised he couldnt get more rebounds.

I share those sentiments. I also have to question Glen Oak's coach..I'd be very interested to hear his reasoning for having a 7'2'' center spending so much time well away from the basket.

GlenOak defeated

St. Xavier dominates in 4th quarter

By David Lee Morgan Jr.

Beacon Journal sportswriter

COLUMBUS - Sure, there will be disappointment and dejection for GlenOak.
Players such as seniors Kosta Koufos, a 7-foot-2 Ohio State recruit, and Mark Quinn, the gutsy point guard who ran the team all season, had a hard time trying to stomach a 45-34 loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier in Friday afternoon's Division I state semifinal at Value City Arena.

Koufos, who was averaging 26.4 points and 15 rebounds, finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman guard C.J. McCollum added nine points for the Golden Eagles (23-4).

Koufos ends prep career with class
Saturday, March 24, 2007
BY TODD PORTER

As the final minutes ticked off during pregame warmups, Kosta Koufos lumbered to a seat along GlenOak's bench. The 7-foot-2 senior, alone with his thoughts and nerves before his final high school basketball game, bowed his head and prayed.

Koufos wrapped a rosary around his left hand, crossed himself three times, took a deep breath and got up. He prayed for strength and for protection of the foot he broke last year.

His foot held up, and Koufos was strong enough. But no one in the state semifinals is big enough or good enough to do it all by himself. What the Lord giveth, the parochial schools taketh away.

GlenOak found out Friday night in a 45-34 loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier. It seemed wherever the All-American was, the potential rebound caromed to the other side.

Kosta leaves to standing ovation

It didn't take the student section from St. Xavier High School long to find their target. Minutes after the doors opened Friday at the Schottenstein Center, the legion of Bomber students filled in behind the basket where GlenOak was warming up. GlenOak's 7-foot-2 Kosta Koufos wore the bull's-eye for their barbs. He smiled but mostly stayed focused.

OSU recruit Koufos takes lumps vs. St. Xavier

By Kyle Nagel
Staff Writer

Saturday, March 24, 2007

COLUMBUS ? For a week, Pete Zestermann faced 6-foot-6 team managers holding rackets and umbrellas to simulate gigantic Kosta Koufos. He also surely lost some sleep over the 7-2 Ohio State recruit.
"I'll be able to tell everybody I guarded him," said Zestermann, a 6-8 Cincinnati St. Xavier forward. "I'll keep the stats and show people every time he plays."
