Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I do think it's hilarious that with the expanded playoff, ESPN, a lot of college football fans who don't really pay attention and the SEC themselves (coaches, players, students, fans etc.) all thought that an expanded playoff would feature 5 SEC teams who would end up making up 50% or 75% of the final four...

And for years SEC fans and talking heads have berated James Franklin, saying he bolted for the Big Ten at the first opportunity because he couldn't handle coaching in the big bad SEC. They completely and conveniently dismiss the recruiting opportunities and resources that Penn State provides that Vanderbilt doesn't and use Penn State being a contender in the Big Ten as proof that the SEC is so much better and tougher...

But in reality, James Franklin is a good (but not great) coach that has had Penn State close (but never reaching) the summit of the Big Ten for years. And any criticism of him is basically that he can't quite reach the next level. Which is hard to do when you are trying to compete with Michigan and Ohio State every year.

In reality Penn State is kind of an afterthought in the Big Ten title picture. They are presented by sports media as a contender, but they're really the team who's most likely to provide an upset.

But that team, who's coach was too shitty for the SEC, who have only won the conference 3 times in the last 20 years, who have struggled unsuccessfully to unseat Ohio State and Michigan since they entered the conference 31 years ago...

So we finally have an expanded playoff. With 12 teams. So which programs are in the final four of the inaugural NCAA Football National Championship Tournament?

Alabama aren't, Georgia aren't, Tennessee aren't, LSU aren't...

James Franklin's shitty ass Penn State Nittany fucking Lions are.

It looks like the SEC isn't all that great. It also looks like the Big Ten is one tough fucking conference...

Ex-Cult Member gone rouge!

I ended up in State College once on my way back from my friend's house north of Baltimore when I was trying to save tolls on the turnpike by cutting up to 80. I was using my phone for the map, which bricked itself while we made our way through that shithole town. We tried to bring up the map on my wife's phone and there was no Verizon data coverage so we pretty much had to drive and hope we were going the right way until we found coverage. Side note just take the turnpike.

I have actually ruminated on that quite a bit in terms of how this has played out. The SEC didn't get half the playoff spots or more like I think they were expecting. Now you have 3 midwest teams and a Big 12 team that recently turned SEC. Vols got blown off the planet by us and Georgia didn't get blown out by ND really, but it was a convincing win in my view by ND. Obviously it is just one year of the expanded playoff, but I think it has gone very differently than expected.

I do slightly prefer PSU winning tonight just so we potentially have a chance to beat them twice in one season and also for conference supremacy arguments having an all B1G national title game (which takes a big backstage to OSU just winning it all, but it would be a nice kick). PSU just really needs to focus on its run game with Allar, Allen and Singleton. Aside from Warren, they have almost no threat in the passing game and Franklin seems to refuse to stick with the run when it is working.

End of the day, I think this will be a close one and I will just enjoy it before my borderline anxiety (or excitement, not sure yet) hits tomorrow.
