This. For you youngsters, watch the videos. Nobody had the same combination of speed and power. He had this one move where he acted like he was running out of bounds and he would stop on a dime, spin, and tip toe backwards down the sideline. The defensive players talked about how much it hurt to tackle him. If he played 4 more years nobody would have ever caught his yardage numbers.

For just running the ball, Walter Payton was great but he wasn’t the best, he wasn’t as great running the football as Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, or the 3-to-5 best years of Gale Sayers, Earl Campbell, or Bo Jackson when they were healthy.

But as an all-around football player, I believe he was was the best. Over 4500 career receiving yards, great at pass protection, and a real threat with the halfback option pass.

And since this is a Penn State thread, Franco Harris isn’t in the class of these other guys and should be ‘cut-out’ of the discussion.

I think it proves his line couldn't do enough for him in games that mattered.....and he must've accumulated stats the Michigan way. That and he's always been a home run guy.....so rushing for 200 in a game looks like the line is good, until you see he had runs of 78 and 94 and then a whole bunch of nothing.

But the accumulated stats argument can't be limited just to Michigan and Penn State. Ohio State players put up big numbers against lesser opponents too. The second argument, that stats reflect grind while the reality is in plays that hit home runs? Again that can't be limited to just players from Michigan and Penn State - e.g. V Rutgers: Miyan Williams 21 189 9.0 5 70 9:48 - 1st) Miyan Williams run for 32 yds to the Rutgr 2 for a 1ST down, (10:01 - 3rd) Miyan Williams run for 70 yds for a TD, (Noah Ruggles KICK) So Miyan gained 102 of his 189 yds on just two carries. Compare that to his game against ND, where he did have to grind to get stats.

The point is that rushing for a thousand yds in a Big ten season is an accomplishment, no matter which team the player played for and the stats reflect credit on the players around that running back. It is also a fact that most great runners are able to hit home runs and that those over 20-yard plays greatly improve their stats.

Removing context never shows the true picture. If you remove the context of his yardage being gained mostly on big runs and against overmatched competition....then, yeah...it looks like he has a good line. That's not how it works, though.

Jim Brown looked great running ahead. Then, after the play, he'd be slow to get up and you'd swear he could barely make it back to the huddle. Next play Brown would run over 3-4 guys for 6 yards. He'd slowly get up and would again look like it was a strain to get back to the huddle. He'd repeat that for the entire 60 minutes. He was amazing.

Barry Sanders might have had a chance if he didn't play on bad teams which eventually sapped his will. But I man Barry would talk about being an all time great and aid every day his dad would tell him he's not better then Jim Brown

Is it a lifetime achievement award or a dominance award?

But at his peak, one game you must win, I take Earl.

I know it's NCAA vs. NFL... and I'm biased... but for a man on a mission in one or two games, I really like this guy.
