Wrong glass, Sir.
"Winning a bunch of games for a long time" - that got me thinking. How does Paterno match up with other coaches, based on winning percentage?
Not wanting to do a lot of work, I compared him only to Woody Hayes. And only on his time with Ohio State.
All-time winning percentage at Ohio State - Woody Hayes has a 0.743 percentage.
All-time winning percentage at Penn State - Joe Paterno has a 0.746 percentage.
In-conference games:
Woody Hayes vs. Big Ten opponents: 0.776.
Joe Paterno vs. Big Ten opponents: 0.638.
In fairness to Paterno, Woody's numbers are probably skewed because he never had to play against Ohio State.
Yep, he was the Boise of his day but with handpicked ref crews on top of it. The sad thing isn't that the pollsters wouldn't give him national championships for those undefeated season. The sad thing is that he somehow couldn't go undefeated every year with those schedules and those refs. The man's entire life--on and off the field--was one grand con job.
