Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

SMU to PSU:

"STFU....you could have had WORSE, BEEIOTCHES"

http://blog.pennlive.com/patriotnewssports/2012/07/smu_to_psu_it_could_have_been.html

The afternoon the Mustangs received the death penalty in 1986, SMU sophomore receiver Mitch Glieber watched, enraptured, as coaches from big-name football programs all over the country swarmed Southern Methodist University's campus.

They milled around in the parking lot outside the football complex, talking to players and setting up official visits. The Mustangs were getting shut down, and the players were jumping ship.

That's a scene that Penn State fans fear right now.

The punishment meted out by the NCAA Monday morning was harsh.

Five years probation.

A $60 million penalty.

A four-year bowl and postseason ban.

A 40-scholarship reduction over four years.

And a free pass for any player who wants to transfer.

This one really hurts. But as much as it stings, those who lived through the SMU death penalty of the late 1980s would like to remind their Penn State contemporaries that things could have been much worse.

SMU's homecoming game in 1988 was a soccer game. "We didn't have a band, didn't have cheerleaders and drill teams. Fans didn't get to go to games."

Charles Davis on SiriusXM again.

"This is beyond the pale. Emmert had nothing to go on. He sent the letter last November to Penn State, and got nothing in return."

All the more reason Emmert and the NCAA should've given PSU the death penalty. The cultish air around that place that smacked of a total lack of accountability needed to be cleared out, and the decision makers needed to be taught a lesson.

Growing respect of Spanier... Reply
After reading his recent letter to the BOT, my respect for Spanier has grown immensely. First, the alpha dog traits that allowed him to wield power across PSU, the state and the NCAA (until Nov 2011) are on display. The tone and clarity are a sharp contrast to anything that has come out of PSU since he was fired as President. What I most appreciate is that his PRIDE in PSU, in what he helped build, is undeniable and he is willing to defend those things that are worth defending. In that way, he and JVP were more similar than different, though they were often at odds.

I recognize that many won't find Spanier statement believable, but he makes a compelling case. Certainly he adds validity to the idea that Freeh's interpretation of the facts is simply that...one possible interpretation.

Re: I believe Spanier Reply
My family believes him also. He sat with my family at dinner quite a few times. Because we had young kids and no else did. In philly or other locations. The guy cares about kids. I can't believe Spanier knew the full story.

I'm sending in the cleaner now....

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) ? An insurance company for ex-Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky says his homeowners' policy shouldn't have to cover civil suits stemming from his sex crimes.
