Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I've long maintained that the Paterno sainthood myth had become intertwined with their own personal psychological identity and sense of self worth and professed superiority. They didn't just root for a better foosball team than yours. They were inherently better, more moral people than you and me because they rooted for HIS foosball team. When they say "We Are Because He Was," it's not some trite saying of fanhood like "Go Bucks" or "Hook Em." They mean it in a deeply fundamental manner central to their very sense of identity. In other words and to put it more clinically, they are very, very fucked up people.
Cults, man.

You will be shocked when you hear this- coverage of Penn State athletics is not a top priority in suburban Philadelphia.

It's surprising with football- since Temple is the only FBS program between Philadelphia and State College. Most of the schools between Philadelphia and State College (Penn, Villanova, Lehigh, Lafayette & Bucknell) are FCS programs

Penn State basketball is even less of a priority in Philadelphia, since there are six schools that play D-1 basketball- the Big 5 (Temple, Villanova, Penn, LaSalle, St. Joe's) and Drexel.

Add on a 3 hour drive (into literally the middle of nowhere) from Philadelphia to State College.

Confirmed

Philly (and it's suburbs) is a professional sports town. Not a college town. If any college lays claim it 'Nova in basketball season.

This is where you can meet the elusive, non-cultist Penn State fans.

Now that they have improved in recent years, there's been more interest in Temple football. If they can only keep a solid coach (Golden, Rhule, Addazio), and not be a jumping point.

I would agree that Philadelphia is more of a pro sports city, but their fan support depends on the team. They sell out the Wells Fargo Center & Lincoln Financial Field regardless of how good/bad the Flyers & Eagles are.

They only support the Sixers when they're good... As for the Phillies, not so much. When the Yankees, the Yankees' JV team (aka the Mutts), and Boston come to town, 75% of the fans at Citizens Bank Park are fans of the opposing team.

Then again, what else would you expect from a team in the Phillies that has more losses than ANY TEAM IN ANY SPORT?

The old stadium literally had a jail, courtroom and judge in its bowels to process the Eagles neanderthal fans as quickly as possible. Browns fan may have been a bunch of embittered battery chucking drunks back in the day, but they were mere pikeys compared to Eagles fan.

They had a courtroom & jail at Lincoln Financial Field when it first opened as well.

With the exception of Las Vegas & SoFi Stadium in LA- I've been to Giants games at every NFL stadium. Philadelphia is the only place I've been in a fight.

I've seen Eagles fans go after a Giants fan in a wheelchair, punch police horses, eat crap...

Only advancements in technology would save her from the D cell shower.

If you limited that to Phillies "fans", I would agree with you. When the Yankees, the Yankees' JV team (aka the Mutts), and the Red Sox come to Citizens Bank Park, 75% of the fans there are for the opposing team.

Phillies "fans" are probably the most fair weather fans in baseball. When Phillies "fans" act like their shit doesn't stink, ask them where they were when the Phillies were racking up more losses than any team in any sport.

During the 2007 season, the Phillies became the first team in any sport to reach 10,000 losses. With their last loss of the 2019 season, the Phillies became the first team in any sport to 11,000 losses. (SOURCE: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/)
