Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

If one of those trustee candidates ran on a "sure I love the football program, but we have a university to run here and our first priority is to educate" platform, they would not get a single vote.

I think they would. I just think it would be a smaller percentage than at any other Big Ten university. I just can't think that everyone is like the BWI crowd. Christ, I seem to remember the students at Ohio State being a diverse group when it came to their interest in the football program: the entire gamut from fanatical about it to indifferent to couldn't give two shits. Then again, I can't see Ohio State alumni ever electing a Lubrano type to a hypothetical board of trustees, and if they tried Wexner would arrange for an accident to befall him before he was ever seated.

I have neither the time nor the patience to read every one of those bios, but has anyone found a "the university is bigger than Paterno" candidate? I've seen a few that don't mention him, but no one who actually proactively counters the Lubrano faction.

Adam Taliaferro was also elected, IIRC. He does mention Paterno, but only briefly, and does not mention his firing:

As Penn Staters, we live by the words "We Are...Penn State." Now is
the time for us to come together to show the world what it truly means
to be Penn State Proud.
We are all aware of the tough times Penn State has gone through. It
has hurt me to see the school I love go through such adversity. Penn
State helped me get back on my feet and I want to do any and
everything I can do to help Penn State get back on its feet?assisting
Penn State is sincerely personal to me.
If given the opportunity, I will provide fresh ideas and perspectives to
the board. As an alumni representative, I believe it's imperative to
interact and communicate with our alumni on a regular basis. Over the
years, I've prided myself on attending and speaking at numerous
alumni events and my relationship with our alumni is something I take
very seriously.
As an attorney, my job is to evaluate and help resolve issues. There
are challenges ahead for Penn State, but I welcome the opportunity to
engage in constructive dialogue with current Board members as well
as fellow alums to better our University. If elected, I can assure you my
decisions will always be in the best interest of Penn State.
Coach Paterno challenged us to make an impact. As alumni, we all
have the power to make a positive impact. It would be an absolute
honor to represent our alumni on the Board

He sounds downright reasonable. I wonder if being one of JoePed's former players somehow absolved him of the requirement of publicly taking a knee before The Legacy. If it was somehow implicit...even if that wasn't Taliaferro's intention.

Well, he's also the only one that can state that Penn State is down and needs help to "get back on its feet"

Kid is bulletproof.

(Yes, and I assume it's implicit)

I'd say it's fairly well proven that he can't "take a knee" very well at all.

True, although I do hope that he takes his duties to the school seriously, unlike Lubrano, who seems to only have run for the BOT as the self-appointed "Crusader for the Deification of Saint Joe Pedterno."

His comments on Joe's firing made to the Philly Post on 6/21/12:

Many alumni are upset that Joe Paterno was fired. If you were on the board, would you have fired him?
Absolutely not. I would not have fired him on the basis that they got rid of him. I think he deserved an opportunity to come in, and he deserved more than a phone call. You hate to see anybody or anyone at Penn State or Coach Paterno go through anything like this. Coach Paterno was like family to me. For him to have to go through all this in his last days was something that I hated to see.
