Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

"It was 'shopped!"

I still think it's hilarious that the cult can't admit any flaws of the man whatsoever. It really shows a solid grasp of reality.

As I've said a thousand times, their sense of self-worth and identity are literally tied up in the myths he created around himself. They weren't fans of a better football team because of Joe Paterno. They were superior human beings because they were fans of Joe Paterno's football teams. For them to suddenly admit it was all a lie, is too big a psychological barrier for most of these cultists to cross.

It's the difference between a normal fan base that can deal with a beloved coach having to be fired (Woody and Tressel) and a dysfunctional cult that is psychologically incapable of admitting even the most minor transgression by their godhead.

Regarding the JoePed movie, I have a feeling that either way it's going to discredit the myth of Joesus. Either the movie portrays Joe Knew or there will be a national outcry that it's a bullshit whitewash. Can you imagine Doyle's column if they portray him as a doddering old man who didn't know what was going on or the "victim" of Curley, Schultz and Spanier.

Either the movie repudiates JoePed or the movie, and thus JoePed will be repudiated in the national press.

Not sure which way this film will fall out. Looking at Director Barry Levinson's film bio, he did the Kevorkian film with Al, too, and I found that one kind of unsatisfying--it felt a bit soft in it's interpretation of the man. Then again, he did films like Wag the Dog, which was viciously satiric. I never saw his takes on Phil Spector or Madoff--those would probably provide some clue about how they'll handle this one. Guess I'll have to wait for the reviews before I pay for a subscription to HBO. No way I'm sitting thru a glossy apology for Joesus and the Pedsters.

Edit: One article notes that Pacino originally wanted to play JoePed based on the 2012 biography by Joe Posnanski. If much of the tone of that book carries thru this film, it will be a sorry disappointment to the rational people of this nation. Fingers crossed Al has learned better since then.

"This book," writes Joe Posnanski in the introduction to his already controversial biography, Paterno, "is not a defense of Paterno." Yes, it is, and relentlessly.

Great comment from article on the movie:

That's an awfully high-priced and well known actor placed into a role where he gets to say and do nothing.

But then, of course, in another article (I'm trying to find out an air date--isn't one yet, apparently) there is this steaming pile of BS post:

It’s not the “Penn State” scandal, it’s the Sandusky Scandal.

Yeah, right, Asshole. Like the Holocaust wasn't about Germany, it was just about Hitler.

I give you the quote from the Spotlight movie: "If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one."

I noticed that, too. The hierarchy of "superiorness" (Is that a word? It should be.) is based on how close to "St. Joe" you were. First was "Joe", himself, and second was "Sue". (What is up with everyone being on a first-name basis, over there? Are they that friendly with one another?) Then of course family members. When it gets down to the fans of Penn State during his reign, the better your story of meeting "Joe", the more superior you are. If "Joe" talked at your commencement, your degree meant a little bit more than anyone else's. If you saw "Joe" walking out of an ice cream parlor, your day was much more superior to everyone else's. And the next best thing to "Joe" was that statue. Ha - and the way they decorated that ugly statue like a shrine: if that doesn't scream "crazy cult", I'm not sure what does. The only thing that might be missing is a daily chant. Unless I just don't know what it is?

This is one of the things that drives me crazy. If I'm out driving around during one of their games and I want to check in on how badly they're losing.....every player is just referred to by his first name.

We are, because he was. Amen.

They've created some kind of Pleasantville bubble in their minds. I never gave much thought to the name Happy Valley until the cult reared its head, but it really is indicative of their viewing it as some cultist paradise where nothing goes wrong and all the people are good.

And don't forget the sainted "Lettermen." They're more important to the university than the faculty.
